By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tilman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病)and heart disease. Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on.And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment. As the worlds population grows, more forests and tropical(热带的)areas will become farmlands for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now.Mr. Tilman calls the link between the diet, the environment and human health, “a trilemma ”a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.【语篇导读】自然杂志上一篇新的报告指出,西方饮食对人的健康和环境有不良影响,人们应警惕西方饮食带来的危害。21.According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from .A. transportationB. developing countriesC. agricultureD. developed countries答案:C解析:细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的最后一句“We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now”可知,未来更多的温室气体排放可能来自于农业,故选C项。22.David Tilman believes that .A. the diet, the environment and human health are closely connectedB. the Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializesC. people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart diseaseD. traditional diets are more balanced than the Western diet答案:A解析:推理判断题。 Tilman calls the link between the diet, the environment and human health.a difficult choice”可知,Tilman先生把日常饮食、环境和人的健康之间的联系称为三难困境。 23.We can infer from the passage that . A. Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes casesB. overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseasesC. the examined information comes from developing countriesD. industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet答案:D解析:推理判断题。根据第二段的最后一句“He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet”可推知,工业化、人口增长和收入增加造成了西方饮食的传播,故D项正确。24.The main purpose of the passage is to .A. call on us to protect the environmentB. warn us of the danger of the Western dietC. remind us of the importance of healthD. advise us to have a balanced diet答案:B解析:写作意图题。 BHave you ever seen a talking parrot on TV or in someones home? Parrots have learned to copy the sounds that people make. But birds are not the only animals that can copy the sounds they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some apes can also copy sounds. Now researches have found that elephants can also copy the sounds around them.Dr. Thane is a zoologist. She has many researches in the sounds of elephants. When she was in Ohio, she often heard some strange noises made by Malika after sunset. Malika was a 10-year-old African elephant.Malika lived near a highway. Dr. Thane says, “I could not tell the difference between Malikas call and the distant trucks noise.” She and other scientists studied Malikas sounds. It turned out that Malika was copying the sounds of the trucks going by. Why would Malika copy trucks which she heard going by on the highway? After copying the new sounds, animals may enjoy practicing them. When they are kept outside of their natural environment, they may copy unusual sounds. That may be why an elephant can copy the sound of trucks.“Malika was not the only elephant that can copy other sounds,” Dr. Thane says. Camero is a 24-year-old male African elephant. He spent 15 years with two female Asian elephants. Asian elephants can make chirping sounds (sounds made by birds) to talk with one another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Camero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends. Dr. Thane says that elephants need to form bonds with their family and friends. She says, “They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are separated, they use sounds to keep in contact.”The finding that the parrot, dolphins, humans, and elephants can learn to copy other sounds shows that copying is one way that animals and people make new friends and keep old ones.【语篇导读】这是一篇说明文。 25.According to the passage, what did Malika copy?A. However, he arrived at school dirty every morning, and along with his outward appearance, Ronny stood apart from his classmates in other ways, too. His home was a mess and his parents never settled in one place. He had yet to live a full year in any one place.Every time when it was Ronnys turn to read, he would sit close to me. I watched his fingers move slowly under each letter as he struggled to sound out “Bud the Sub.”It sounded more like “Baw Daw Saw” when he said it because of his speech impediment and his difficulty with the alphabet. The year passed quickly and Ronny had made some progress but hardly enough to bring him up to grade level. A few weeks before the school year ended, I held an award ceremony. It took me a while to figure out where Ronny fit; I needed something positive, but there wasnt really much. I finally decided on “Most Improved Reader.”I presented Ronny with his certificate and a book.A few days later, I returned to the school to visit. I saw Ronny read the book. His teacher appeared beside me.“He hasnt put that book down since you gave it to him. Its the first book hes ever actually owned.”Fighting back tears, I approached Ronny and asked, “Will you read me your book, Ronny?”He glanced up and nodded. And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me with more expression, clarity, and ease than Id ever thought possible for him. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said with great satisfaction, “Good book.”At that moment, I knew I would get serious about my own writing career and do what that author had done, and probably still doescare enough to write a story that changes a childs life, care enough to make a difference.I want to be that author.【语篇导读】本文是记叙文。 29.The underlined word “impediment” in Paragraph 2 probably means .A. styleB. anxietyC. disabilityD. technique答案:C解析:词义猜测题。根据第二段中的“he struggled to sound out Bud the Sub. Joe Trybulski, headmaster of the school, said that the decision wasnt a difficult one.“Using drinks containing caffeine can do harm to your learning,” he said.Energy drinks like Red Bull and Spike Shooter are popular with kids, even kids as young as 10 or 12 because theyre super-sweet and they give you a lift. Theyre advertised by sports starsfrom famous football and basketball players to well-known names in extreme sports like snowboarding or skateboarding. The energy drink industry denies that they sell directly to children. They claim that $2-$4 cost per can makes energy drinks too expensive for kids, and theyre aimed at adults. Not only that, they say, most energy drinks have less caffeine than coffee.“Are you going to start carding kids at coffee houses and candy shops?” asked one manager.“We cant imagine why a school would ban Red Bull from campus,” says another, a spokeswoman for Red Bull.To make a comparison, a cup of coffee contains about 95 milligrams(毫克) of caffeine. An 8.3 ounce can of Red Bull contains 75 milligrams, more than twice the amount of caffeine in a 12 ounce can of Coca Cola. Its interesting to note that not that long ago, coffee was considered strictly an adult drink. Times have changed, and now researchers say that theres no clear proof that energy drinks and caffeine harm children, but its certain that caffeine tends to affect children more than adults. Too much caffeine is a far smaller amount for a 110 pound 12 year old boy than it is for a 175 pound adult man. And children, say health experts, get into a harmful cycle with energy drinks when they drink them in the morning to wake up after having trouble falling asleep the night before.【语篇导读】这一篇说明文。文章介绍了Hillsborough中学在校园里禁售能量饮料的情况,并说明了禁售的原因和社会反应。32.Why do kids like Red Bulls or Spike Shooters?A. Creating the college essay is supposed to be a fun, and exciting task. It is a process of self-discovery. Some helpful tips:1.Have fun!37. Relax, breathe and realize that this is the time to expose a side of you that a transcript(学生成绩单) cannot.2.38. The worst thing you can do is pick and ordinary topic. Stay away from volunteer work, your dead dog and vacations. Admission counselors(入学辅导员) see thousands of essays a month; make sure your essay is distinct to your experience and personality. Do not focus on what you think they want you to write, but what is actually significant to you.3.Dont try to make yourself a victim. Although it is effective to appeal to the emotions of an admission counselor, I do not recommend writing an essay about sad stories. Self-pity can be annoying, and most admission counselors do not want that to be their first impression of you. The only exception to this is if you have an inspiring struggle that you overcame.39.4.Your essay is not a longer version of your resume(简历).If you sent in a resume, there is absolutely no need to restate what is on it. Many students like bragging(吹嘘) about how much they do. It is amazing that you are involved, but admission counselors do not only want to hear about how much you do, especially if they already see this on your resume.40.Good luck on your college essay!A. It was received well by many.B. Dont settle for basicbe creative!C. When you get upset, it is reflected in your work.D. You can talk about how a work changed your life.E. They want to see aspects of you that cannot be shown on a resume.F. In some cases, these 600 words determine an acceptance or a rejection.G. Make sure that the story is focused on your growth, not on the struggle.答案与解析:【语篇导读】本文是说明文。文章是写大学申请论文的几点建议。36.F解析:F项与上文的see the importance of it相呼应。37.C解析:C项与本段小标题及下文的Relax, breathe相呼应,说明学生要让自己在心情好的情况下写大学申请论文,并从中找到乐趣。38.B解析:由下文的“The worst thing you can do is pick an ordinary topic.but what is actually significant to you.”可知,本段主要是说大学申请论文的内容要避免老套的话题,应该体现自己的独特性。故B项恰当。39.G解析:G项与上文的“have an inspiring struggle that you overcame”相呼应。40.E解析:E项与上文的“admission counselors do not only want to hear about how much you do, especially if they already see this on your resume.”相呼应
