核科学与技术学院: 周福增 学号:201221220010 班级:写作16班 The Current Situation of Marriage in ChinaFrom 1980s, China plunged into the wave of economic reform and opening up to the world, and also during that phase, globalization swept across the entire China. These two factors contributed to the tremendous changes in the Chinese society including peoples life and their views. Traditional marriage was no exception to that change and was attacked vigorously. Generally speaking, based on the succession from the traditional marriage perception and the absorption of the views of marriage in the western world, the marriage perception of the Chinese has transformed from conservative to open, from unitary to diverse, and from pure and simple to utilitarian. Specifically, the changes are as follows:To begin with, materialism is becoming the substitute for modern marriage. In recent years, marriage is shouldering more and more realistic expectations despite of love, for instances, money, power, and social status etc. love is no longer the motivation for people to tie the knot, but money and power do enjoy the priority to push people to get married. Marriage is more like a trade rather than the fruit of love. Right now, it is a prevailing dictum for girls that the amount of money your boyfriends is willing to spend on you relies on how much he loves you which is totally absurd. What is more ridiculous is that there is a notorious model stated disgracefully in a TV program that she preferred to cry in a BMW rather than laugh at the back seat of a bicycle. These kinds of examples are everywhere. What comes next is that marriage in modern times is more and more vulnerable. According to statistics, there are around 4,000 couples divorcing in China everyday which is a quite shocking number. There are two reasons why they end their marriage. Firstly, in the contemporary China, more and more marriage are the products of match-making programs on TV or blind date activities in peoples daily life, for instance, the most well-known match-making program is “If You Are the One” in Jiangsu TV channel which is popular even outside of China like in Southeast Asia, the USA and the UK. These marriages are just like “fast food”, they lack the process of being exquisitely cooked that refers to the process of the couple adapt themselves to each other which is crucial in a marriage. Secondly, both men and women are short of the sense of responsibility in a marriage, whenever they encounter some trouble or conflicts, both sides are more willing to end the marriage than to negotiate with each other and work things out even though the divorce is at the cost of the wellbeing of their children. Last but not least, more and more Chinese are pursuing a distorted marriage values. Ernai, also known as second wife or mistress is believed as a trendy phenomenon in contemporary China. Young girls with pretty faces, attractive figures and decent education are taking proud of having a “sugar-daddy” which means being the mistress of a wealthy men who is old enough to be her father. Sometimes, their parents are even being supportive of their behaviors, for example, Gan Lulu, another flagrant model is considering mistress as a profession, along with her sister and her middle-aged mother. As Dickens said in his The Tale of Two Cities “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”, this times has its pros and cons. In this times, we are enjoying the technological advancement and convenience brought by economic boom, and we are having more
