Food and Agricultural OrganizationFood and Agricultural Organization (FAO) is a specialized United Nations agency whose mail goal is to eliminate hunger on a world scale. The organizations mandate is to “raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of world economy”.The main activities of FAO concentrate on four areas: Offer assistance to developing nations; Provide information about nutrition, food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries; Provide advice to governments; Serve as a neutral forum to discuss and formulate policy on major food and agricultural issues.2. Litre The litre (or liter in the US) is a metric unit of volume. The Litre is not an SI (International System of Units), but (along with units such as hours and days) is listed as one of the “units outside the SI that are accepted for use with SI”. The SI unit of volume is the cubic metre (m3). A litre is equal to 0.001 cubic metres.3. CalorieA calorie refers to a unit of energy. There are two common but different meanings: one is used in food and nutrition, the other was formerly widely used in chemistry, and a food calorie represents 1000 chemistry calorie. The food calorie is sometimes capitalized as Calorie to distinguish it from the chemistry calorie; however, this capitalization is rarely observed in practice.4. Global WarmingGlobal Warming or climate change refers to measurable increases in the average temperature of the Earths atmosphere, oceans, and landmasses. Scientists believe the Earth is currently facing a period of rapid warming caused by rising levels of heat-trapping gases, known as greenhouse gases, in the atmosphere.Greenhouse gas retain the radiant energy (heat) provided to the earth by the Sun in a process known as the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases occur naturally, and without them the planet would be too cold to sustain life. Since the beginning of Industrial Revolution in the mid-1700s, however, human activities have added more and more of these gases into the atmosphere. For example, levels of carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas, have risen by 35% since 1975, largely from the burning fossil of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gases. With more greenhouse gases in the mix, the atmosphere acts like a thickening blanket and traps more heat.b.
