As their children began moving up through the nations schools, it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was forming . Their achievements are reflected in the nations best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree. Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian Culture that promotes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education. Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they form a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social separation. Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.TopicIn the past 1 , Asian Americans have made great academic achievements, making them the fastest-growing U.S. minorityReflection of achievementsAsian Americans more easily 2 in mathematics, science and engineering._3_ for achievementsAsian-American students prefer mathematics and science .1.Having a solid foundation in mathematics 2. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of colon. Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illnesses is not a new discovery. In 1945, about 60 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates(硝酸盐), commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives(添加剂), caused cancer. Yet, these additives which cause cancer remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue. You are not alone. One in four children in the United Kingdom was the victim of online bullying in 2007. Cyberbullying(电脑化欺辱) is yet another problem that parents and children are facing in this new Internet age. Cyberbullying involves the use of information and technology such as e-mail, instant messaging, and personal web sites that are used to support conscious, repeated, and hostile(敌对的) behavior by one or more people with the intent to harm others.According to one victim, the difference between being bullied at school and being bullied on the Internet is that you cannot get away from cyberbullying as easily. Cyberbullying follows you, even after you get home from school. There is hope. Here are some tips to help you protect your children against cyberbullying.Make sure your children do not respond to rude and troublesome e-mails, messages, and postings. Keep a record of them in case you need proof. Call law enforcement and inform your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if necessary.Use web sites that translate the lingoes(行话) your children are sending or receiving so that you can understand the words that are being used in e-mails and chat rooms. If your children continue to receive troublesome e-mails, have them delete their current accounts and open a new one. This new e-mail address should only be given to a few people they can trust with it.If your children are receiving troublesome messages through instant messaging, help them make use of the “block” or “ban” feature. This feature can be used to block certain individuals from being able to reach your child. If you have found that a cyberbully has set up a web site that is bullying your child, contact your ISP and, if necessary, also inform law enforcement to try to get that web site removed.Get your childs school involved. Learn what the schools policy on cyberbullying is, and urge the administrators to take an attitude against all forms of bullying.Cyberbullying problemAbout the problemOne in four children in the UK (1)_ from online bullying in 2007.Cyberbullying refers to the (2)_ in which information technology is involved to harm others.Cyberbullying follows around all the time as long as the Internet is (3)_.TipsMake no (4)_ to rude and troublesome messages.(5)_ to law enforcement for help if necessary.Get to understand the words in e-mails and chat rooms with the (6)_ of certain web sites that translate the lingoes.Delete the current accounts and open a new one to (7)_ troublesome e-mails.Use the (8)_ of “block” or “ban” to block troublesome e-mails from certain individuals.(9)_ away with the web site by law if it is insulting your child.(10)_ the school in taking actions on cyberbullying.14If your family is like many in the United States, unloading the weeks groceries includes hauling a case or two of bottled water into your home. On your way to a soccer game or activity, its easy to grab a cold one right out of the fridge, right? But all those plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the environment. In fact, Americans buy more bottled water than any other nation in the world, adding 29 billion water bottles a year to the problem. In order to make all these bottles, manufacturers use 17 million barrels of crude oil. Thats enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months.Imagine a water bottle filled a quarter of the way up with oil. Thats about how much oil was needed to produce the bottle. So why dont more people drink water straight from the kitchen faucet? Some people drink bottled water because they think it is better for them than water out of the tap, but thats not true. In the United States, local governments make sure water from the faucet is safe. There is also growing concern that chemicals in the bottles themselves may leach into the water.People love the convenience of bottled water. But maybe if they realized the problems it causes, they would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a refillable steel container instead of plastic.Plastic bottle recycling can helpinstead of going out with the trash, plastic bottles can be turned into items like carpeting or cozy fleece clothing.Unfortunately, for every six water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. The rest are sent to landfills. Or, even worse, they end up as trash on the land and in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Plastic bottles take many hundreds of years to disintegrate.Water is good for you, so keep drinking it. But think about how often you use water bottles, and see if you can make a change.Betty McLaughlin, who runs an organization called the Container Recycling Institute, says we should try using fewer bottles: “If you take one to school in your lunch, dont throw it awaybring it home and refill it from the tap for the next day. Keep track of how many times you refill a bottle before you recycle it.”And yes, you can make a difference. Remember this: Recycling one plastic bottle can save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours.Drinking Water: Bottled or From the Tap?(1) situationAmericans consume the (2) bottled water in the world.(3) for peoples preference for bottled waterBottled water is of higher (4) .Its more (5) for people to drink bottled water.Problems with bottledwaterThe (6) of plastic bottles use lots of fossil fuels.Water bottles we use cause serious (7) .(8) the passageoffersUse bottles (9) of glass or steel.Use a refillable plastic bottle as many times as (10) before recycling.15The Hong Kong government is set to overhaul(革新) its immigration policy with the aim of making it easier for mainland and overseas talents to live and work in the city. This is a welcome step because it will remove what is widely seen as a major hurdle to Hong Kongs efforts to attract qualified immigrants to help its development. To sustain the growth of the services sector, which accounts for nearly 10 percent of Hong Kongs GDP, it is necessary to continuously expand the pool of talents in various fields. Efforts to attract mainland and overseas talents to Hong Kong are taking on special urgency not only because of fierce competition from other cities, particularly Singapore, but also the rapidly aging population resulting from years of low or negative birthrates. Hong Kong enjoys certain distinct advantages over many Asian cities in the competition for talents. Beyond its vibrant economy, underlined by a free market environment, Hong Kong has a combination of some of the most distinctive elements of Chinese and Western cultures. Hong Kong is as exciting as many other Asian boomtowns, and yet it is no less efficient than a typical European city with a much smaller population. Housing costs are high, but no higher than those in other financial centers. For international banks and multinational corporations, housing costs are a concern only when the opportunity to make money begins to dry up. And this situation is not happening in Hong Kong as the local economy, riding the boom on the mainland, is rapidly expanding. It is within this context that the government takes the lead to revise its immigration policy, which calls for, among other things, the establishment of a one-stop service center to process all applications under various migrant schemes. This means that an applicant will in future need to submit only one form for processing. Other changes to the policy include the removing of the age restrictions and lowering of experience requirements. Under the present scoring system used to vet applicants, those who are older than 50 and those with less than five years of work experience win no points in their respective categories. The details of the proposed changes have not been announced. But according to a government official quoted by the local press, the aim is to broaden the pool of qualified applicants. The HK governments revising its immigration policyAimsIt aims to (1) _ the pool of qualified immigrants and attract talents to help its development.ReasonsOther Asian (2) _ cities bring great pressure on it.Low birth rates (3) _ about rapidly aging population.AdvantagesIt has a (4) _ market environment. It (5) _ elements of Chinese culture and those of Western cultures. It is as (6) _ as a typical European city.(7) _ with other financial centers, housing costs are not a concern due to the boom on the mainland.ChangesApplicants will need to (8) _ in only one form for processing. The age restrictions are (9) _.Experience requirements are (10) _.16Much of our good health depends on the cooperation between substances. When they work together, chemical reactions take place smoothly. Body systems are kept in balance. Some of the most important helpers in the job of good health are the substances we call vitamins.Vitamin A is needed to produce a light-sensitive substance in the eyes. People who do not get enough vitamin A cannot see well in the dark. The best source of vitamin A is fish liver oil. It is also found in the yellow part of eggs. In addition, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A.Vitamin B-1 is also called thiamine. It changes starchy (含淀粉的) foods into energy. It also helps the heart and nervous system work smoothly. Without it, we would be weak and would not grow. Thiamine is found not just in whole grains like brown rice, but also in other foods. These include beans and peas, nuts and meat and fish.Vitamin B-12 is needed so folic acid can do its work. Together, they help produce red blood cells. Without them, a person suffers from anemia (贫血症). Vitamin B-12 is found naturally in foods such as eggs, meat, fish and milk products.Vitamin C is necessary for strong bones and teeth, and for healthy blood vessels. It also helps wounds heal quickly. The body stores very little vitamin C. So we must get it every day in foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and uncooked cabbage.Vitamins(1)_of vitaminFunctionsProblems caused by(2)_ of it(3)_Vitamin AHelping prevent poor (4)_ at nightInability to see well at nightFish liver oil, yellow part of eggs, darkly colored fruits and vegetablesVitamin B-1(5)_ starchy foods into energy;Being good for the (6)_ work of the heart and nervous system(7)_ health and slow growthWhole grains, beans, peas, nuts, meat and fishVitamin B-12Helping prevent a (8)_ disease called anemiaAnemiaFoods like eggs, meat, fish and milk products (9)_ in itVitamin CA (10)_ for strong bones and teeth and healthy blood vesselsNot mentionedCitrus fruits, tomatoes and uncooked vegetables17Rising Grain Prices Panic Developing WorldGovernments around the world have taken effective measures in recent weeks to control their countries supplies of rice. The price of grainscorn, wheat, and ricehas been rising since 2005 under pressure from farmers who would rather plant crops for biofuels than for food. The sharpest increase has been this year, with the price of Thai rice nearly doubling since January, to $60 per metric ton. Some analysts expect that price to reach $1,000 in the next three months. Tang Min, a former chief economist for the Asian Development Bank, said the price increase is the inevitable consequence of supply and demand. “The world population is increasing, but the increase of the planting of rice has not been as fast,” he said. “Without the oil price increasing substantially, the corn price will not increase. Without corn prices increasing quickly, the rice price will not rise.” Despite efforts by governments to increase wages and introduce food subsidies (津贴), price increases and shortages have led to violent clashes along supply lines, in food distribution centers and at supermarkets. To encourage farmers to go back to planting food, China, Indonesia and other countries are increasing their minimum compensation to farmers who grow grains. In China, the government is concerned that the price increase is already leading to upsetting incidents. In August 2007, a supermarket in the inland city of Chengdu decreased the price of eggs from more than 4 yuan to 3.2 yuanabout 46 centsto cater to shoppers. Thousands of people showed up at the front door, and four were injured during what the domestic media called “scare buying”.In October, a Shanghai-based chain supermarket put five-liter bottles of cooking oil up for sale at the discount price of 30.8 yuan$4.39, about $2.85 lower than the usual price. Five minutes after the store opened, 19 people were hurt in the rush to buy. The jump in food prices has had a big effect on developing countries because food acc
