Hrothgar, the King of Danes, built a magnificent feasting hall. While the Danes were having a banquet to celebrate, Grendel, a half-human monster, feels lonely and jealous, and he attacks them as they sleep, killing many people. Beowulf travels from Sweden to help the Danish people. They have a party to attract Grendel and Beowulf defeats Grendel by pulling off his arm. After Grendel flees, when they are celebrating Grendels Mother attacks them to take revenge and then runs home. Beowulf follows the trail to a lake and swims to the bottom, finding Grendels Mother in her cave. They battle fiercely and Beowulf wins by beheading her and Grendels corpse. Beowulf returns to Sweden and becomes a great King for 50 years. Before Beowulf dies, theres someone stealing the golden cup from a Dragon, which makes the Dragon furious and attack the Swedes. Therefore, Beowulf fights the Dragon and wins, but then dies from his injuries. He is buried and remembered as a great hero. Beowulf Movies: There are about 3 editions of the original story so far. Each of them is different, so Ill compare the Beowulf movies by making a comparision of the 3 kinds of Beowulfs.QUESTIONAIREIn order to have a better look at the 3 kinds of Beowulfs, I have made a questionaire among our 34 classmats.( including myself)Among the following 3 charater of Beowulf, which one do you like best?.A.2007 B.2005C.1999Results:25 People choose A, 5 choose B, and the other 4 people choose C. So, the Beowulf of Beowulf 2007 is the most popular one, maybe beacause of his gold muscle! Major Differences Between 3 Kinds of Beowulfs1. Appearances: Even though they are all strong and tough, they are very different. The first BEOWULF of edition 2007, lets call him Beowulf A, his appearance is the one that most looks like a traditional heros in the mythology, eg: Picture A The second one in BEOWULF and GRENDEL 2005, Beowulf B is the one whose face is just like a common mans face in my opinion, eg: Picture B And the last 1999 one，Beowulf C is the one whose face looks least like a heros. His appearance is too common to stand out. No wonder he worked so much to finally kill Grendel. Dont you think his face is too common to be a hero?! I just think he is more like a murder than a hero, eg: Picture C2. Costumes: As we can see, Beowulf A always bares his upper body and only wears his armor vest, showing his strong muscles, which does not comform to the weather in Denmark actually. Beowulf B always wears fur and whole-length armor to protect himself and sometimes wears cool armet. Whats more, his hair is the longest among them. Beowulf Cs costume is the modernest and can be easily connected to the modern warrior. He wears leather and that really makes him look cool and strong.3.Characteristics: First, lets start from their relationships with Grendels Mother and see the variations. In the original story, Beowulf kills Grendels Mother the first time they meet. However. Beowulf A doesnt kill Grendels mother when he sees her beauty and magic power. She seduces him to stay and Beowulf does as she asks immediately. In the contrary, Beowulf B kills Grendels Mother when he first sees her because she is really ugly, fierce and cruel. Beowulf C kills Grendels Mother even though she is hot and sexy and she seduces him. From these, we can draw the conclusion that:Beowulf As ability of self-control against sexy woman is the least while Beowulf B is better than him. Beowulf C can control himself well when sexy woman seduces him.Second, lets see their own characteristics in the movies. Beowulf A is a proud, arrogant man who always blow his own trumpet by exaggerating his fights with monsters. However, Beowulf B is much more modest than Beowulf A and he always keeps quiet when others show off his achievements. Sometimes Beowulf C is cool, arrogant and looks down upon the others, but sometimes he is really low-spirited when struggling with his own identification. Maybe his characteristics is the most complicated one to identify. So, we can conclude that:Beowulf A is the most heroic, and Beowulf B is modest and tough as well. Beowulf C is the one whose characteristic is just like an average person, having mistakes and worries. Third, lets see their different endings. Beowulf A dies from his injuries after he kills the dragon which in fact is his son with Grendels Mother. In the edition of 2005, it doesnt show that Beowulf kills the dragon while it ends with Beowulf B kills Grendels Mother and returns home. After Beowulf C kills Grendel and Grendels Mother at the same time, he leaves the castle with the Kings daughter, who is not exist in other editions. So:Beowulf As ending most comforms to the original story while Beowulf B and Cs endings are abridged to some extent. Especially Beowulf Cs ending is the strangest I think. However, this kind of change is good and natural after all.Students Remark:Firstly, Ali,I really wanna thank u for your 2 years companion.
