On April 26th, 2005 Kuomingtang leader, Lien Chan, visited the mainland and three days later, President Hu Jintao held talks with him. This is the first meeting in 56 years and may help to bring peace across the Taiwan Straits(海峡). How much do you know about this beautiful island? The island faces Fujian. The shortest distance from Taiwan to Fujian is 130 kilometres across the Taiwan Straits. A ship can cover it in four hours. As the biggest island, Taiwan is still only about one-sixth the size of Hunan. Around it, there are also lots of smaller ones, like Penghu Islands and Diaoyu Islands. Taiwan is rich in natural resources(资源). Half of the island is covered with forests, and it has many kinds of agricultural products, like rice and tea. Taiwanese people are mostly descendants(后代)of people from Fujian and Guangdong. They still use the language from their old hometown. They also celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. At the Spring Festival, they even eat dumplings! Once, communications across the Straits were not so good. In 1979, Beijing put forward an idea that Taiwanese people should use better ways of communicating and build better business and transportation. There is now more business and tourism(旅游业)across the Straits. On July 4th, 2008, the first direct flights between Taiwan and five mainland cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou and Xiamen started up. As we all know, Taiwan is always an important part of our country. We are one big family. But some top leaders in Taiwan like Lee Tenghui and Chen Shuibian have been trying to make Taiwan an independent(独立)country. The Rich Island D. You and Me(C) Do you ever feel as though time just is not moving fast enough and you cannot wait to grow up? After all, once you become an adult, you are independent and free to make your own decisions. More importantly, becoming a real adult means you are finally allowed to do all those things that you cannot do now because you are too young. So, the question is, “At what age do you really become an adult?” Well, that really depends on which country you live in. People become adults at different ages in different place. Imagine that you have just had your 18th birthday in Australia. This birthday is a very important event for young Australians because it means they are allowed to do almost anything they want. They can vote, learn to drive a car, get married, join the army and even buy their own house. However, even if they can do all these things, most Australians have to wait until their 21st birthday to really celebrate becoming an adult. This is the traditional adult age not only in Australia, but also in the USA and the UK. It is their first year of true independence. Traditionally, people were given a key to their house by their parents when they turned 21, meaning they could come and go as they pleased. Even though 21 is the traditional adult in many English-speaking countries, the law nowadays is different in each country. In the UK, you can join the army at 16 and even get married at 16 if you have your parents permission. Young people in the UK can learn to drive a car at 17 as in Australia, although they have to wait until they are 18 to vote. In China, there is a different age for each of the stages of becoming an adult. You can vote and learn to drive a car when you are 18, but if you want to get married, women have to wait until they are 20 and men until they are 22. Chinese people celebrate important birthdays every 10 yearsso when young people turn 20, they can expect a big party! No matter what age you are, becoming an adult is really about learning how to be independent and responsible. Once you are finally able to take care of yourself and make your own decisions, then you can say that you are truly all grown-up.46. According to the passage, adults are _.A. independent grown-ups B. married peopleC. people who can drive D. people in the army47. What age do Australians really become adults?A. 17. B. 18. C. 20. Why do people in Australia get the key to the house when they are really become adults?A. Because the law decides it.B. Because they can leave when they want.C. Because they can come home when they want.D. Because it is a tradition.50. Adults are free to _.A. decide when to celebrate their own birthdaysB. look after themselves wellC. make their own decisionsD. make time move faster(D) Most people think they know the differences between healthy and unhealthy habits, but some people mix up good and bad habits without knowing it. Here are four common myths people have about health.A vegetarian diet is unhealthy. Some people think that vegetarians are unhealthy because they do not eat any meat. Meat is a good source of protein, which we need to keep our bodies healthy. However, you do not need to eat meat to get protein. It is also found in nuts and beans, which most vegetarians eat regularly. So, they can be just as healthy as meat eaters.Eating chocolate gives you spots. It is true that eating too much chocolate is not always good for you. It may cause you to gain weight as it contains a lot of fat. But it does not cause spots. In fact, spots are caused by the hormones in your body. Apart from washing your face twice a day, you have to just be patient and they will go away. If you really have a problem with spots that just wont go away, talk to your doctor who can help you treat them. That way, you can still enjoy chocolate!Exercising every day is good for you. Some people think the more you exercise the better, but exercising seven days a week can be really unhealthy. If you do exercise too much, youll start to feel tired all the time, and you can seriously hurt yourself by overworking your muscles. Even professional athletes take a break form their training now and then, so you should, too. Exercising three to five days a week is enough to stay fit and strong. And if you miss out once in a while to spend time with friends or family, thats fine too.No matter how hard something is, you should never give up. Your parents and teachers may tell you never to give up trying, no matter how hard something is. While responsibility and commitment are important, it can be unhealthy to continue doing something that makes you feel really unhappy. Stress can cause headaches, hair loss, skin and stomach problems, and many more serious problems. If you are really unhappy about something, no matter how hard you try to be positive, talk to someone and look at how you can change the situation. Isnt your health worth it?51.
