dream of those endless days at the beach ly ing on the sand and enjoying the bright and burning sun And then summer comes and it rains As a child I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to c rying It wasn t fair We suffered through months of school and experienced b ad weather for those short ten weeks of freedom and pleasant weather On those rainy summer days I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside staring out at the rain like a bird in a cage I was an only child s o there was no one else to play with My father worked from home so I w as not truly alone but he could not actively play with me since he was at work It was those days that I would watch whatever was on television or rea d any books that I could find lying around I d drag through the day and pray each night that the rain would not be there the next day As an adult though my opinion of summer rain has changed When y ou have to work every day summer is not as exciting Everything seems dul l Such a mindset makes you cheer for anything new or different I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer dreaming of winter When summe r comes I hate how hot it is And then I look forward to the rain becaus e the rain brings with it a cold front which makes me comfortable Rainy d ays are still the worst days of the summer but summer rain today means po sitively beautiful and considerably cooler weather tomorrow 21 When the author was a child he A hated rainy days B liked staying indoors C preferred cooler weatherD dreamed on summer days 22 We can learn from the passage that the author because A he knows it won t last long B rain makes the weather cooler C his summer holiday is very short D he can better deal with his downtime B Nothing could stop Dad After he was put on disability for a bad back he bought a small farm in the country just enough to grow food for the fa mily He planted vegetables fruit trees and even kept bees for honey And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin s chicken house in exchan ge for manure 肥料 The smell really burned the inside of your nose When we complained about the terrible smell Dad said the stronger the manure the healthier the crops and he was right For example just one of his cant aloupes 得瓜 甜瓜 filled the entire house with its sweet smell and the taste was even sweeter As the vegetables started coming in Dad threw himself into cooking O ne day armed with a basket of vegetables he announced he was going to make stew 炖菜 Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabba ges eggplants potatoes corns onions and carrots For about half an ho ur the pressure built and the vegetables cooked Finally Dad turned off th e stove the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cl oud of steam If we thought Dad s pile of chicken manure was bad this was 10 times worse When Dad took off the lid the smell nearly knocked us out Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house Just how bad was it The neighbors came out of their houses to see i f we had a gas leak Determined Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them a round It didn t look that bad and after the first wave had shut down my ab ility to smell it didn t offend the nose so much either I took a taste It would never win a prize in a cooking competition but it was surprisingly ed ible and we drank up every last drop of soup 24 Why did Dad clean Old Man Mocolgin s chicken house regularly A To earn some money for the family B To collect man ure for his crops C To get rid of the terrible smell D To set a good example to us 25 What can we infer about Dad s stew A It is popular among the neighbors B It contains hon ey and vegetables C It looks very wonderful D It tastes quite delicious 26 What father C He has a positive attitude to life D He suffers a lo t from his disability C With the videogame market flooded with more violent games it can be a constant struggle for parents to monitor and limit their children s video gaming But a recent US Supreme Court decision doesn t help parents The ruli ng struck down California s 2010 law that had prevented the sale or rental to those younger than 18 of violent games The majority opinion said such limits went against First Amendment rights So parents it s up to you to fight a gainst the influences of the 18 billion video gaming industry With so many video and computer games easily accessible that moni toring role isn t easy It s not just a matter of saying no to children say p sychologists Some parents who shun government involvement ho w long they re playing and make sure the games are appropriate for their a ges and personalities she said It s not hard to find reviews ratings 分级 and details about games Video game ratings by the Entertainment Software Rating Board give consu mers an idea of the level of violence sexual content and bad language Vide os with a rating of M for mature for example are said to be suitable fo r people 17 and older But the system is voluntary so younger children can buy or rent M rated games But it s not enough to rely completely on the ra tings 28 A recent US Supreme court ruling A urged to addicting But he still likes it when I read out loud to him b efore bed I ve always read to him I could probably recite Goodnight Moon by he art and I like to think it has helped to instill his love of reading in him But as he s gotten older reading to him has changed The books are lo nger of course and sometimes he corrects me if I misread a word in the dim light of his room But what s really changed is what we both get out of it When I was in fifth grade I had a wonderful teacher Mr Hanks w ho would read aloud to the class after lunch I remember him reading Roald Dahl s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and me hanging on every word I co uld hardly wait for lunch to be over to find out what happened next to little Charlie Bucket Now I m giving the same gift to my own son Last week he brought me a copy of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol he found on the shelf and aske d me to read it to him One of the bonuses of reading to an older child is yo u can revisit a beloved book from your past or be exposed to a book you ha ve never read yourself Such was the case with A Christmas Carol which I admit I had never rea d So when I started reading I worried that it would be a tough go since the book uses expressions and the language Dickens used in the 1840 s I found myself having to define things such as braziers and balustrades But in the wo nderful descriptiveness of Dickens prose my son was especially taken with his description of Scrooge s house where he had often played hide and seek wi th other friends 31 When it comes to reading out loud to the author s son she feels
