an important part of many peoples diets. researchers from the harvard school of public health in massachusetts have released a report about rice. it shows that eating white rice increases the risk of type two diabetes (糖尿病). however, eating brown rice reduces the risk of the disease.the world health organization says more than two hundred and twenty million people worldwide have diabetes. type two diabetes results when the body cannot effectively use the sugar it produces. more than thirty-nine thousand men and one hundred and fifty-seven thousand women took part in the study. they were asked about their diet and day-to-day activities, as well as any pre-existing diseases. the study found that the people who ate five or more servings of white rice per week had a seventeen percent increased risk of developing type two diabetes. but those who ate two or more servings of brown rice a week had an eleven percent reduced risk of getting the disease. brown rice is the grain in its natural form. white rice results after it has been refined. this involves removing the outer cover. only the inner white kernel is left. white rice is often enriched to replace some nutrients lost during the refining process. qi sun is the lead writer of the report. he says the outer parts of brown rice slow down the work of the bodys digestive enzymes (消化酶) into starch. this means that the release of sugar into the bloodstream is slower after eating brown rice compared to white rice. a diet of foods that quickly release sugar into the bloodstream has been linked with a greater risk of type two diabetes. the exact reason for this is not known. doctor sun says less refined grains have more nutritional value than refined grains. he says replacing white rice with whole grains like whole wheat or barley could result in a thirty-six percent lower chance of developing type two diabetes. he says people should replace white rice and other refined carbohydrates with whole grains whenever possible. however, brown rice does not last as long as white rice because of the oil-rich layer of bran. this makes it less usable in poor communities. the international rice research institute is working to develop kinds of white rice whose starch is released more slowly.51. what is the exact reason of type two diabetes? a. eating too much white rice. b. sugar in the bloodstream. c. digestive enzymes in the starch. d. it is still unknown to us. 52. what does the underlined word “refined” in the fourth paragraph mean?a. processed. b. cut. c. struck. d. developed.53. which of the following is true?a. white rice has more nutritional value than whole grains. b. the oil-rich layer of bran can prevent the brown rice from going bad.c. eating brown rice may reduce the risk of developing type two diabetes.d. the outer cover of brown rice will speed the release of sugar into the bloodstream.54. whats the best title of the passage?a. the importance of rice b. brown rice and white rice c. diabetes and rice eating d. sugar and diabetes b why texting harms your iqthe regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the iq more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). that is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the users iq. this rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in iq associated with smoking marijuana, according to british researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. the research conducted by hewlett packard, the technology company, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men. it is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a persons mind. it can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. the report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. at a microcellular level, the complex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences. too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a persons mind, but to their social relationship. 1100 adults were interviewed during the research. more than 62 per cent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. it is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting ones characteristics. nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude. the effects on iq were studied by dr glenn wilson, a psychologist at university of london. “this is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “we have found that infomania will damage a workers performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.” 55. we can learn from the passage that “infomania” _.a. has a positive influence on ones iq b. results in the change of part of the brainc. lies in the problem of lack of concentration d. is caused by too much use of modern technology56. the research mentioned in the passage is most probably about _. a. the important function of advanced technologyb. the damage to ones brain done by unhealthy habitsc. the relevance between iq and use of modern technologyd. the relationship between intelligence and working effectiveness57. the underlined word “scrutinized” probably means “_”. a. examined carefully b. copied patiently c. corrected quickly d. admitted freelycmost of us long for relationships in which we are loved and accepted. our hearts desire is to give and receive love in relationships that make us feel that even if others disagree with what we do or say, they still love us, accept us, and appreciate what we give to the world. while it would be wonderful to have these types of relationships with all people, we know thats hard to do. however, we can have such relationships with some others, but only when we first have them with ourselvesand, strangely, this is often the hardest relationship of all. do you love yourself? you may think you do, but do you really? theres only one way to find out-by taking a close look at what you think, say, and do. you may not like some of what you find, but if you are serious about really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work. herere three ways for gaining greater personal insight for deeper love:listen closely to your thoughts your thoughts will determine your actions. one thing helping you to listen to your thoughts is keeping a journal. it is not necessary for you to write in it every day, but it helps to record various insights you gain as you go about your life. instead of using a big notebook, you might use a small notepad that you can keep in your pocket for easy access to record your thoughts as they occur to you. whichever method you choose, whats most important is that you write your thoughts down. it will help you know whats in your heart.be honest with yourself to do this, you should pay attention to your actions. actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth. if you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more reliable? on the other hand, if you say youre not good at a certain job, but your actions say otherwise, thats also important. what do you do with this insight? you can use it to make more positive choices in your life. by being honest with yourself, you will act according to truth instead of just what you tell yourself.take quiet time to listen to your inner voice this is similar to the first point, but it takes a step further-beyond the natural mind to the heart that cannot be seen. you may want to use your quiet time to think deeply. however you use this time, the key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself. breathing deeply during quiet time wi
