The Spirit of Christmas 教学设计鹿泉经济开发区学校 赵艳梅Part 1 The analysis of the teaching material1)Status and functionThis lesson is from Unit 2 Grade 9 Peoples education press , and it is a reading passage, which focused on the topic of The Spirit of Christmas, such a topic is familiar to us, so it is easy to arouse the Ss learning interests. 2)Teaching aims and demandsFirst, the knowledge objective :Ss understand the main idea of the article;Second, the Ability objective: Ss develop their abilities of preview, reading and retelling.Third, the emotional objective:1. Ss get the spirit of cooperation and competition through teamwork and pair-discussion; 2. Ss get good moral characters of helping others;3. Ss show interest in English learning. Forth, the Cultural awareness Ss should know Christmas is a western festival which is usually celebrated by Christians.Fifth, the key points: 1. Ss get a thorough understanding of the whole passage,2. Ss develop their reading skills such as skimming and scanning, and their spirits of competition and anticipating Sixth, the Difficult points:Ss are able to retell the passage according to the main language points given , and develop the ability of skimming and scanning.Part 2 The analysis of students Ss have learned English for some years. They can simply express their ideas. They are curious, active, and fond of games, competition, and various activities. They enjoy learning through cooperation in a relaxing atmosphere.Part 3 Teaching methodsIn this lesson, My teaching methods include audio-visual teaching method, communicative teaching method, and task-based teaching methodsStep 1 lead- in (3mins)Lead into Christmas by playing a word riddle. Ss can try to guess the word by asking questions like this: What is the word about? Is it a Chinese festival or a Western festival? .Step 2 Pre-reading (10mins) Ask Ss how much they know about Christmas with the help of a mind map like the following. If necessary,give them some help.Date: December 25thSymbols: Christmas trees, Santa Clause, Christmas presents and so on.Activities: People buy or cut down a Christmas tree and decorate it, have Christmas parties, sing songs and have a big meal.Countries: western countries usually celebrate it, like America、Canada、France、Germany 、England and so on.Color: Western people usually use red、green and white to decorate Christmas. They have red flowers and red candles, green Christmas trees and red and white Santa Clause. Step 3 While- reading (15mins)There are three times reading r in this step. l first reading:Ss read the article as quickly as they can and try to get the general idea by answer the following questions.Q1: Who wrote the novel Christmas Carol ? -Charles DickensQ2: What is it about? -It is about an old man named Scrooge who never laughs or smiles.l second reading(In this step there are three tasks like the following. )1)What kind of person is Scrooge? Why? -He is mean. Because he only thinks about himself, and he just cares about whether he makes more money and hates Christmas. What is he?(What does he do?) - He is a businessman.2)What does Scrooge see when three ghosts visit him? - a. He see his happy childhood when he is with the first ghost. b. He sees how others are spending Christmas when he is with the second ghost. c. He sees that he is dead, but nobody cares.3) What does Scrooge do after the three ghosts visit ? -He decides to change and to be a better person. He happily celebrate Christmas with his relatives. He also gives gifts to people in need. He now treats everyone with kindness and warmth, spreading love and joy everywhere he goes. third reading: quick-answer Why does Scrooge want to change? ( Because his business partner Jacob Marley used to be mean, and he was punished after he died. Scrooge is afraid of being punished like Jacob Marley.)Step 4 Post-reading (10mins) 1)Pair discussion: Let Ss get a deep understanding of the article, (1)What is Scrooge like in the three periods? a. before visits(He is mean/cold/selfish)b. after visits (He is kind/friendly) (2)How does he feel in the three periods? a. before visits(He is sad/unhappy) b. while visits (He is happy/lonely/scared) c. after visits (He is happy) (3)a. Does Scrooges character influence his feelings? -Yes, it does. b. What makes Scrooge happy in the end? -Sharing,giving love and joy to people around.c. Think about what makes a person happy? -Sharing,giving love and joy to people around.d. Does happiness have to do with wealth? Why? -No, it doesnt. Because you have a lot of money,but you dont want to share what you have and give love and joy to people , you ll be unhappy. Scrooge is such an example.e. What is happiness?(How can you be happy?) -Happiness is sharing,spreading love and joy everywhere .2)Retell: (If there is enough time this step will be done)Use the key word and phrases presented on the PPT to retell the article. Key words: famous novel, rich, mean, hates, cares about, on Christmas Eve, past, present and future, be afraid of being punished, decide to change, learn to share, spread love and joy everywhere, happy.Step 5 Homework (2mins)1.
