(pictures showing crowded cars)ss: from the pictures, we can see cars with four wheels have taken the place of bikes with only two wheels and even become a popular means instead of that on foot.t: what effect can you imagine will they have? ss: they will cause a great deal of pollution and the polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to our health.t: so can you think of any ways to get rid of this bad situation?ss: its likely to build a car that does not pollute the air.t: great! today we are going to read an interview. after that, i think we may find a way out. step pre-readingactivity one: get familiar with solar carst: look at the pictures on page 40 and guess whether you have ever seen this kind of car.ss: i can see a special car, quite different from what i have seen.t: how many different kinds of cars can you name?ss: there are a variety of cars, such as bus, coach, sedan, limousine according to the sizes, and electric car, solar car according to the energy used.t: do you know anything about solar cars? where do they get their power from?ask students to answer questions in activity 2 and use the phrases to help them.s1: more or less. solar cars use the suns energy; they dont use petrol, gas or any other fuel. they are clean, safe and cause no pollution.step iii while-readingactivity one: discover useful informationt: read the interview. please find the advantages of solar racing car.let students read the interview aloud fast and pick out the sentences about the advantages of solar racing car.ss: solar cars are clean and safe. they are getting better all the time and can run fast, even in cloudy weather. activity two: judgment in detailt: well-done job. next please read the interview again quickly and tell whether the statements are true or false.let the ss read the interview and find the details quickly in pairs.sa: marie logan began designing cars when she was a student. it is true.sb: i dont think the second sentence is right. she has taken part in six races, but has won two of them. sc: the team has nearly finished building a solar car. it is true. sd: the fourth sentence is wrong. the actual fact is that she has only written the first few chapters. se: the last one is true.t: it is very helpful to use the structure to locate specific information. sometimes we need to skim over sentences that arent related to our information, but wed better make a mark where the details are.step ivpost-readingactivity one: discussiont: imagination and creation are both of great use while reading. lets go to activity 4 on page 40.ask students to discuss in pairs. let each imagine himself/ herself as a solar car designer and is having an interview with a journalist and then act it out.sample:(j stands for a journalist and d for a solar car designer.)j: as we all know, traditional cars using petrol or gas have caused serious pollution to the environment. so, a new car called solar car has become increasingly popular recently. as a solar car designer, would you like to tell us what is a solar car? d: solar cars are cars that use the suns energy for power, as the name indicates. that means they dont use petrol, gas or any other fuel, just the sunlight.j: i see. what advantages do solar cars have over traditional cars?d: because solar cars use no other energy than sunlight, therefore, its safe and clean, which is environmentally friendly. besides, without paying for the increasing cost of petrol or gas, it will save a lot of money.j: how wonderful! ive heard that you have been designing solar cars for a long time. im wondering what made you interested in it so much.d: actually, i have been car crazy since my childhood. as growing up, every day i can see the serious problems caused by cars. our sky is no longer blue, our cities are no longer clean and the air is no longer fresh. i became worried a lot, which inspired me to create a new car without any pollution when i was at college.j: you are really ambitious. have you realized your dream?d: yes, but it is really hard. ive been working very hard, planning and designing together with my schoolmates and later my colleagues. after numerous experiments and sleepless nights, eventually our work was paid off. in 2003, we designed our first solar car.j: how many solar cars have you designed so far?d: i have designed many and they are all racing cars. recently i have been designing another solar car mainly for family use.j: oh, really. it sounds fabulous. if it could be put into mass production in the future, it would definitely reduce our pollution caused by cars.d: i hope so.j: im still puzzled by one question. you know, solar cars can only use sunlight for power. is it still reliable in bad weather, say, no sunlight at
