(show the following on the powerpoint.) ask students to read the materials together.three historical periods of english development(1) old english (450-1150) the beginning of old english is marked by the arrival of the germanic tribes called angles, saxons, and jutes. people generally refer to anglo-saxon as old english. old english is a highly inflected language. in this period, many latin words and scandinavian words came into the english language.(2)middle english (1150-1500) middle english period began with the norman conquest. in this period, many words of french and dutch origins were borrowed into english. middle english was characterized by its losses of many inflectional endings so that it was a language of levelled endings. (3)modern english (1500-now) modern english began with the establishment of printing in england. because of the influence of the renaissance movement, many words of latin and greek origins, etc came into english. also because of the fast development in science and technology, many new words were created. though borrowing remained an important means of english vocabulary expansion, yet more words were created through word formation.step iii the english languagedeal with the text and multiple choice ex 1.students are given seven minutes to read through the article. then deal with the post reading questions together. students can find the answers in the article. ask individual students to read the sentences and the answers. then help students to realize that the article is written in the order of time. at last teacher should draw students attention to the conclusion: english, as a live language, is changing all the time.step iv voa special englishafter learning the development of english from the article, ask students to listen to voa special english. provide more chances to expose students to english so that they will have a good command of what they learn. teacher plays the recording thehistoryofenglish form voa special english. both the recording and typescript are on the internet. the typescript is similar to the reading materials, so students will find thehistoryofenglish voa special english easy to understand.step v language focusdeal with ex 2.ask students to red the words together and make sure everyone is aware of the meanings of the key words. then ask students to complete the paragraph with the given words individually. five minutes later, check the answers by having several students read out the paragraph.deal with ex 3.ask students to read the sentences and discuss that patterns or expressions should be used. then ask eight students to write their sentences on the blackboard or show their sentences on the slide projector, check the sentences with the whole class.step vi homeworkwrite a summary to the development of english.a sample of the summarythe development of englishthe development of the english language is divided into three periods: the first period is from 450 to1150 and it is known as the old english .at about the fifth century, germany attacked england and took the language, it developed into the old english. the second period is from 1150 to 1500, its named the middle english period. in this period, norman controlled england and changed english spelling and introduced many norman words. french and latin words appeared in the english vocabulary, but many old english words were lost.the third english period is from 1500 to the present day, its known as the modern english. the chief influence of this period was humanistic movement. in the modern english period, an important thing is that english was divided into two partsbritish english and american english. at the beginning of the period, englishman came to north american and began controlling this area. engl
