Owing to modes of thinking and cultural backgrounds of people are different from countries to countries, the implied meanings of the same animal may vary and some are even contradictory. This difference will bring much trouble to cross-cultural communication. Therefore, it is very important to learn about the cultural connotation between Chinese and English animal vocabulary, so are the selection of translation strategies. In the paper, the author tries to boost a better cross-cultural communication by comparing cultural connotation of animal words as well as selection of translation strategies. Appropriate translation of animal words can not only help spread cultural traditions but help build a more harmonious world. Step by step, the international community can enjoy more peace under mutual trust and understanding among people all over the world.主要内容、思路及方法How to get rid of different cultural backgrounds in animal words translation and more effectively convey the original meaning have been expressed in the focus of attention. Therefore, it is very important to compare cultural connotation of animal words as well as selection of translation strategies. Three main parts are concerned in this paper.The first part talks about the cultural connotation of English and Chinese animal vocabulary. And several small parts are concerned: First, different animal words with same connotations along with some examples. Second, same animal words with same connotations along with some examples. Third, same animal words with different connotations along with some examples. The second part talks about the cause of difference: influence of culture, influence of convention, influence of region. The third part talks about the selection of translation strategies: literal translation, liberal translation, free translation, literal plus free translation. These translation strategies will be compared in detail by listing different examples. At last, a conclusion is drawn. Why do you choose, on Chinese and English animal vocabulary and translation strategies, as your topic?In daily life, animals are friends of human beings. Whats more, they play an important part in literature and culture. However, owing to the different national characteristics between eastern and western cultures, such as economic development, geographical conditions, fable and mythology, literature, folk customs and social practice, religion etc., the implied meanings of animals may vary and some are even contradictory. It means that there are three kinds of animal connotations: different animal words with same connotations, same animal words with same connotations, same animal words with different connotations. This difference will bring much trouble to cross-cultural communication. Therefore, it is very important to select certain translation strategies according to different region, different culture and different convention between Chinese and English countries.2. What do you think is the meaning of choosing this topic?In English and Chinese culture, animal idioms are symbols of peoples wisdom, knowledge, hope and feeling. Because of different region, culture and convention, the meanings of animal idioms are various: different animal words with the same connotations; same animal words with the same connotation; same animal words with different connotations. All of those animal connotations consist of human beings rich knowledge. Appropriate strategies of translating animal vocabulary, can not only help spread cultural traditions but help build a more harmonious world. 3. What do you think are difficulties of translating animal idioms?There are some kinds of animal connotations: different animal words with the same connotations; same animal words with the same connotation; same animal words with different connotations. All of those animal connotations can be found in translating animal idioms. In my opinion, the most difficult part of translating animal idioms is same animal words with different connotations. Take dragon for an example. in Chinese, especially in ancient time, people thought dragon is a mythical animal with great power. To Chinese, dragon is something sacred and has been referred to the ancestor of the Chinese nationthat s why the Chinese all call themselves descendents of the dragon and Chinese feudal emperors were often referred to sons of dragons, wearing clothes with designs of dragons. However, to the westerners, the dragon is often a symbol of evil, a fierce monster that destroys and therefore must be destroyed. Dragon in the western world is a cruel and vicious creature. As a foreigner, it is impossible to learn about culture in another country as well as a local people. So I dont know how to select strategies of translating same animal words with different connotations.
