Lets find out by meeting Louis PasteurLouis Pasteur was born in 1822 in a little town in FranceAs he grew up,he loved to paintHe loved to look at the world around himWhen he went to college in Paris,he showed interest in looking through a microscopeA microscope makes things look a lot bigger,it lets you see things you cant see just with your eyesLooking through a microscope,Pasteur found a living world in a drop of waterHe saw and drew pictures of the small living things-he called them “microbes”or“germs”-that crowded in a drop of waterOne day a winemaker came into the lab,hoping that someone could help him with his problem“Sometimes my wine tastes delicious,but sometimes terrible,”he said to Pasteur. “Can you help me find out why?”Pasteur put some drops of the wine under the microscopeHe noticed that the terrible wine had some unusual germsIf he killed these germs,maybe he could keep the wine from turning terribleHe tried with different ways to kill the germsIn the end he found heating(加热)the wine seemed to work best. The winemaker tried it, and every bottle of wine tasted goodPasteurs idea worked for other people, tooWhen farmers heated milk,it didnt turn bad so quicklyBeer is heated,it tasted betterPeople called it “pasteurization”-heating a liquid to kill bad germsArent you glad that the milk you drink has been pasteurized?1. Pasteur received college education in Paris.2. Microbes were found by Louis Pasteur with the help of a microscope.3. Germs only live in something that is bad.4. Louis found the way to kill the unusual germs in the wine by chance.5. Everybody knows what the word PASTEURIZED means.6. Pasteurization is used to kill bad germs in the milk we drink.(2)T or FA fellow stopped at a rural gas station and, after filling his tank, he paid the bill and bought a soft drink. As he stood by his car to drink his cola, he watched a couple of men working along the roadside. One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on. The other man came along behind and filled in the hole. While one was digging a new hole, the other was about 25 feet behind filling in the old. The men worked right past the fellow with the soft drink and went on down the road.I cant stand this, said the man, tossing the can in a trash container and heading down the road toward the men. Hold it, hold it, he said to the men. Can you tell me whats going on here with this digging? Well, we work for the county, one of the men said. But one of you is digging a hole and the other fills it up. Youre not accomplishing anything. Arent you wasting the countys money?You dont understand, mister, one of the men said, leaning on his shovel and wiping his brow. Normally theres three of us . me, Joe and Mike. I dig the hole, Rodney sticks in the tree and Mike here puts the dirt back.”“Yes,” said Mike. “Now just because Rodneys sick, that doesnt mean that we cant work, doesnt it?1. Cola is a kind of soft drink.2. The hole dug by the first man was about 4 or 5 feet deep.3. The man filling the hole was about 25 feet behind the first man.4. The two men were actually doing nothing but wasting the governments money.5. They were expected to plant trees.6. The man wiped his brow because he had sweat on it.(3)T or FI was flying from San Francisco to Los Angeles. By the time we took off, there had been a 45-minute delay and everybody on board was ticked. Unexpectedly, we stopped in Sacramento on the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be another 45-minute delay, and if we wanted to get off the aircraft, we would reboard in thirty minutes.Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman who was blind. I noticed him as I walked by, and his seeing eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of him. Then the pilot approached him and, calling him by name, said, Keith, were in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?Now picture this. All the people in the gate area came to a completely quiet standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a seeing eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses that day. People scattered not only trying to change planes but also trying to change airlines! 1. Before the flight take off, the passengers were delayed at the airport for 45 minutes.2. The passengers on the flight were delayed another 30 minutes on the way.3. The pilot knew the blind possibly because the blind had taken this flight before.4. The blind wanted to get off for some exercises with his dog.5. People thought the pilot was blind and they were frightened.6. People didnt want to take this flight because they thought it was dangerous with a blind pilot.(4)T or FSolomon Shereshevski was a man with an amazing memory. He was one of the worlds most famous me-monists (记忆能手). Born in Russia in about 1900, he spent much of his life performing memory skills that people found difficult to believe.He could memorize long lists of numbers after reading them through once, and he could then recite(背诵) them forwards or back-wards.He could also remember the same numbers months later. He could easily remember lists of names, dozens of playing cards or hundreds of cities.Although he had a wonderful memory, he found some normal skills very difficult.For example,he found it difficult to learn to read. He also found it difficult to recognize patterns in words or numbers. When presented with a long list of numbers like this: 1234 4231 5678 8765 6789 9876 he could not see that there was a pattern. If he could see or hear a collection of numbers, he could remember it. However, this did not mean that he could understand what he was looking at. He could remember long complex mathematical formulas, but could not understand what the numbers meant.Solomon suffered from a condition known as Synaesthesia. This meant that all of his senses were connected in a special way. In other words, when he heard a particular word he also experienced a unique taste, or saw a unique color. Each word that he heard brought a particular description into his mind. Each word for him was unique, because he remembered it as a taste, a smell, a color or a sound, or all of them together.He was not a clever man except this ability and people found him rather st
