Teaching material analysis Section A 1a-1c is the first period of Unit10, the topic of which is decision making and the function of which is to talk about consequences using the target structure first conditional if + will. This part, through the listening and speaking activities in 1a-1c, sets the scene of going to a party in which the target structure is introduced and practiced. What the Ss have acquired in this period will lay a good foundation to the learning of the rest part in this unit. 2. Students analysis The topic about party (talked about in unit9), vocabulary in this period as well as the structure “be going to” and “will” indicating the future are familiar to the Ss of grade eight. Therefore, what they have learned will help them to engage in talking about the topic in this period. What is new to them is the new structure: first conditional if + will and to talk about consequences by using this new structure. In making the teaching plan, most activities are made to help them to achieve this goal.3. Teaching objectives 1) knowledge objectivesa. To consolidate the verbal phrases: go to the party, have a good time, stay at home b. To understand and know how to use the first conditional if + will to talk about consequences 2) Ability objectivesa. To be able to use the listening skill for getting specific informationb. To be able to talk about consequences by using the first conditional if + willc. To learn to cooperate with others 3) Emotion objectives To be aware of the certain rules when going to a party and make proper decisions. 4. The main & difficult points Main point: to understand the first conditional if + will Difficult point: to use the first conditional if +will to talk about consequences Strategies for dealing with difficult point: Special attention will be paid to the form of the structure, mainly the verb forms and its tense. Enough language input and output activities will be made to deal with this point. 5. Teaching aids A multi-media computer system, PPT, learning sheet for Ss, blackboard7. Teaching procedures Step 1 Warming-up & lead-in (2min)Tell the Ss that my best friend told me a piece of good news yesterday and I am quite happy about that. Ask them to guess what the news is.Goal: To arouse Ss interest and get them warm up for the following study.Step 2 Presentation & practice(10min)Actvity1 Presentation: target language input1. Set the scene: the news is that my best friend Reina is getting married this Sunday and I am going to her wedding party. 2. Ask the Ss to think about: If I go to the wedding party, what should I think about?(key words such as “when”, “how”, “what”, “who” will be put on the mind-map on the blackboard)3. Show pictures related to the key words on the mind-map and ask Ss questions “what will happen if?”4. Guide the Ss to answer these questions by using the target structure “Ifwill”Goal: To introduce the target language to the Ss and to help them recognize and use the target language in the situation that they are familiar with. Activity2 Pair work: practiceAsk Ss to work in pairs and talk about:1. What are you going to do this weekend?2. What will happen if?Goal: To consolidate the use of the target structure in natural speech and to practice communicative and cooperative skills. Step 3 Pre-listening(7min)Activity 1 1a 1. Ask Ss to read the pictures in 1a carefully and questions like “Where will the girl go?” will be asked to help the Ss find out what the Ss in 1a are talking about. 2. Match the statements with the pictures a-dGoal: To introduce Ss the unit goal: decision making and to set the scene, consolidate Ss vocabulary and introduce the target language. Activity2 Prediction & practice1. Ask Ss to talk about what will happen if the boy / girl makes his/her decision to do something.2. Questions related to each picture will be asked to talk about the possible consequences of the Ss decision making. Take picture b for example:A: How will the girl go to the party?B: I think she willA: What will happen if she takes the bus to the party?B: If she takes the bus to the party, she will. If she does, she will Goal: To get Ss prepared to the following listening activity and to practice the target language by changing the subject into third person. Step 4 While-listening(3min)1. Listen and complete the responses in 1a and check if your predictions are right.2. Check the Ss answers.Goal: To practice listening for specific items and to help the Ss recognize the target language in natural speech.Step 5 Post-listening(16min)Activity1 DiscussionAsk the Ss to think about:1. Why will the teacher not let John in, if he wears jeans to the party?(dress code of parties)2. In picture b, what will happen if the girl is late for the party?(Being on time is always important) Goal: To help Ss to be aware of the certain rules of going to a party and ask them to be polite ones in their interpersonal relationship.Activity2 Group work: role-play & report1. You are invited to a party. You decide What kind of party it is. Make conversations about:1). What will you do? (when, how, what, who): one or more questions are ok. 2).
