Overview of the lessonThe first period introduces a lot of words describing people first. And then students will be provided listening and oral practice using the target language. So in the lesson, students will learn how to describe the peoples appearance and personality. They will share opinions about the changes between a person in the past and now by comparing, listening and talking.二. Teaching Time: 45 minutes三. Teaching Objectives1. Knowledge ObjectivesStudents will learn to talk about what they used to be like and they will learn and grasp the structure used to, including statements, yes/no questions and short answer.2. Ability Objectives Students will train their own integrating skills by comparing, brainstorming, listening, talking, reading and writing.3. Moral Objectives Students will know that everyone surely changes. If someone is afraid of speaking in front of the class, encourage him/her not to be shy. “The more you practice, the more confident you will be ”。四.Teaching Key Points1. To learn the key vocabulary and the target language.Key vocabulary: outgoing, friendly, serious, quiet, curly hair, straight hair Target language: I used to be quiet. / she used to have long hair. / 2. To learn the usage of the structure used to. -You used to be short, didnt you ? -Yes, I did. / No, I didnt. -Did Tony use to play the piano? -Yes, he did. / No, he didnt.五. Teaching Difficult Points. 1. To improve students listening, speaking skills.2. To enable students to grasp the usage of the structure used to. 六. Teaching Aids tape and recorder, some pictures, blackboard, chalk七.Teaching Steps Step 1. pre-listening This activity will introduce a lot of words describe people first. And then students are provided listening and oral practice using the target language. -Mario used to be short. -Yes, he did. Now, hes tall.1. Warm Up Show some photos to the students and introduce the key vocabulary. Let them describe the peoples appearance and personality by comparing and brainstorming. Call their attention to the chart with the headlines. Appearance: tall, short, long hair, short hair, good-looking, thin, strong. Personality: outgoing, funny, quiet, shy, friendly, kind, warm-hearted.A: Look at the picture and describe the appearance. (Show some pictures to students)B: How can we describe the personality? (Show some pictures to students) 2. Presentation Show students some photos in the past and now. Let students compare and practice to understand the target language “use to be ” in spoken conversations. Kate is outgoing, but she was quiet in the past. - Kate used to be quiet.3. Explanation When we talk about the things that have changed, we can use “used to”.e.g. Tom used to be short, now he is tall. She used to wear long hair, now she has short hair. Mary used to like swimming, now she likes playing basketball.Step2.listening This activity will give students practice in understanding the target language in spoken conversation.1. Listening :Play the tape and ask students to listen carefully and fill in the blanks. 1. Mary used to be short . She used to wear glasses. 2. Amy used to be tall. She used to have short hair. 3. Tina used to have red and curly hair.2. Pair workLet students have some more practice. Listening This activity is helpful to improve students speaking skills. In this activity, we will introduce more words to students to extend their vocabulary and we will provide more oral practice to them using both the old and new target language. They make conversation about peoples appearance and personality, and they can also talk about the peoples hobbies.2. Pair work Tell the students to practice the conversation, and then make conversations about themselves in pairs. They can use the words which express peoples appearance, personality, habits and hobbies; they can also use “used to .2. Before class, let students prepare 2 photos of their own in different ages. Now, let them talk about their own changes according to the photos in pairs. In this activity, students can improve their own listening and speaking, Encourage them not to be shy: more practice, more confidence. Help students build confidence.Step4. SummaryAsk some students to answer teachers questions. And students can answer in Chinese.Teacher: what have we learn today?Students: Today we have learned the usage of “used to”.Teacher: Yes, very good. All of you must master the words can describe peoples appearance, habits, personality and hobbies and the usage of “ used to”, the short answers of yes/no questions: Yes, 主语+ did. No, 主语+didnt, and the negative sentences of the usages of “used to ” 主语+ didnt + use to do .Step5. Homework Every one describes yourself according to your own 2 photos in different ages, and tell me all of your changes, including appearance, personality, habits and hobbies, etc. Your passages must have at lest 80 words.
