文档简介
All through these dark winter months / the enemy have had the power / to drop three or four tons of bombs upon us / for each ton we could send to Germany in return. / We are arranging / so that presently this will be rather the other way around, / but meanwhile / London and our big cities have had to stand their pounding. / They remind me of the British squares at Waterloo. / They are not squares of soldiers, / they do not wear scarlet coats; / they are just ordinary English, Scottish and Welsh folk, / men, women and children, / standing steadfastly together. / But their spirit is the same, / their glory is the same / and, in the end, / their victory will be greater than far-famed Waterloo.Body language is the unspoken communication / that goes on in every face-to-face encounter with another human being. / It tells you their true feelings towards you / and how well your words are being received. / Between 60 80% of our message / is communicated through our body language, / only 7 10% is attributable to the actual words of a conversation.Your ability to read and understand another persons body language / can mean the difference / between making a great impression/ or a very bad one! / It could help you in a job interview, / at a meeting, / or for a special date!Every one of us / has experienced the feeling of an instant like / or dislike of someone / but without necessarily knowing why. / We just werent happy,/ there was something about them. / We often refer to this as a hunch or gut feelings, / two descriptions directly relating to our own bodys physiological reaction. The Internet undoubtedly enriches our lives in many ways. / The instant reach of the email / makes keeping-in-touch so rewarding / and so excuse-proof. / The access to so much information by our fingertips / certainly makes a tremendous difference. / But do all these new platforms / of carrying on existing activities / contribute to the making of the new opportunities / created by the coming of electricity and telephone, / and steam locomotives and airplanes? / Do they really boost our productivity / and create new wealth? / Are we simply using a new platform in the Internet / to do things we have been doing without it? / If so, / we dont really need Internet companies to do them for us. / Perhaps, the leaders of the Internet revolution /cant easily reconcile with their fate of becoming dispensable. / It certainly will take a lot of independent thinking on our own part / to get over the Internet-is-the-world mood.Nagasaki had never been subjected to large scale bombing / prior to the explosion of the atomic bomb there. / On August 1st, 1945, however, / a number of highly explosive bombs were dropped on the city. / A few of these bombs hit the shipyards and dock areas / in the southwest portion of the city. / Several of the bombs hit the Mitsubishi Steel and Arms Works / and six bombs landed at the Nagasaki Medical School and Hospital, / with three direct hits on buildings there. / While the damage from these few bombs was relatively small, / it created considerable concern in Nagasaki / and a number of people, / principally school children, / were evacuated to rural areas for safety, / thus reducing the population in the city / at the time of the atomic attack.I once said that a friend is a friend all the way, / but now I believe thats a narrow point of view. / For the friendships I have and the friendships I see / are conducted at many levels of intensity, / serve many different purposes, / meet different needs / and range from those as all-the-way / as the friendship of the soul sisters mentioned above / to that of the most casual playmates. The best of friends, I believe, / totally love and support and trust each other, / and bare to each other the secrets of their souls, / and run to help each other, / and tell harsh truths to each other / when they must be told. But we neednt agree about everything / to tolerate each others point of view. / We need to accept without judgment. / To give and to take without ever keeping score. / And to be there, / as I am for them / and as they are for me, / to comfort our sorrows, / to celebrate our joys.People who identify themselves as members of a social group / acquire common ways of viewing the world / through their interactions with other members of the same group. / These views are reinforced through institutions / like the family, the school, the workplace, / and other sites of socialization / throughout their lives. / Common attitudes, beliefs, and values/ are reflected in the way / members of the group use language, / for example, what they choose to say or not to say / and how they say it. / Thus in addition to the notion of speech community / composed of people who use the same linguistic code, / we can speak of discourse communities / to refer to the common ways / in which members of a social group use language / to meet their social needs. As one of the key figures in the history of opera, / Richard Wagner was largely responsible / for altering its orientation in the 19th century. / His program of artistic reform, / though not executed to the last detail, / accelerated the trend towards organically conceived structures, / as well as influencing the development of the orchestra, / of a new breed of singers, / and of various aspects of theatrical practice. / As the most influential composer / during the second half of the 19th century, / his conception of music / remains very much with us / even a century after his death. / His style of orchestration can be heard in many movie scores. / Wagner thought / his music dramas were to be the models for the 20th-century opera, / but he could not foresee the path / of total abandonment of tonality / that was to revolutionize music in the early 20th century. The longer I live, / the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. / Attitude to me is more important than facts. / It is more important than the past,/ than education, than money, / than circumstances, than failures, than successes, / than what other people think or say or do. / It is more important / than appearance, gifted ability, or skill. / It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is / we have a choice every day / regarding the attitude we will embrace from that day. / We cannot change our past, / we cannot change the fact / that people will act in certain ways. / We cannot change the inevitable. / The only thing that we can do / is play on the one string that we have / and this string is Attitude. / I am convinced / life is 10 percent what happens to me / and 90 percent how I react to it. / And so it is with you.As human beings, / we have the special ability to share our thoughts by talking. / We start by forming a thought in our brains. / In the brain, / this thought is changed into a code called language. / Finally, the brain sends a message to the muscles, / telling them to move / and make the right sounds come out. / Then the mouth, face, neck, tongue, and throat muscles / move into motion.Sometimes this process doesnt work perfectly, though. / There might be an interruption or break / in the flow of speech. / This interruption is called disfluency.Disfluency becomes a speech problem / when it gets in the way of everyday talking / and is noticeable to other people. / It can make it hard to get
