Many people prefer not to add salt when cooking wild rice. However, personally I always add a little salt to the rice to balance its taste. Wild rice takes longer time to cook than white rice, but it has many nutrients. Here are three main ways to cook wild rice. How to Cook Wild Rice in SaucepanTake 2/3 cup of wild rice, take two and a half cups of water, and around 1/2 teaspoon salt or according to taste. Wash the wild rice three times with hot tap water and drain it properly. Take a saucepan and heat the rice, water and salt till it boils. Reduce the heat and cover the pan with a lid. Let the mix simmer(文火炖)till the rice becomes tender(软的),and has absorbed the water. The perfect time of cooking wild rice, till it becomes tender can be anywhere between half an hour to 45 minutes. How to Cook Wild Rice in Microwave For this recipe, you will need three cups of water or vegetable soup for vegetarian recipes or chicken soup for non-vegetarian recipes, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt and one cup of wild rice. Wash the rice properly and let it drain. Combine the water or soup with wild rice and mix salt in it. Microwave on high setting for 5 minutes. Then microwave the rice on medium or 50% power setting for half an hour. Let the rice stand for 15 minutes Drain the rice and it is ready to eat.How to Cook Wild Rice in Rice CookerTo cook this recipe you will need 3and 1/2 cups of water or soup, one cup of wild rice, and teaspoon of salt. It was something that the human body really should not be able to do. But what else would you expect at the First World Yoga Championship? On September 25, the worlds leading yoga experts arrived in the US to find out who was the best. But the real prize was to turn yoga into a proper Olympic event.“Yoga is a combination of bodybuilding, Miss World, Mr. Universe and gymnastics,” said championship organizer Bikram Choudhury, “There are some 70 people from more than 20 countries competing in this event. Why not have yoga at the Olympics?”The public cannot decide whether or not Chouldhurys dream will come true. But he is right about one thing: yoga has become popular with young and old people all over the world. In the US alone, 15 million people practise yoga. Everyone is at it, including Madonna and Ricky Martin.Yoga started in India more than 5,000 years ago. The name means “to join together”. That is to bring the body and mind together into one pleasing experience. The whole system of yoga is built on three things: exercise, breathing and meditation (沉思).The yoga that we know today is mostly physical yoga. Its seen as a type of exercise, but is different from sports like football or running. When we do yoga, we move our body into positions that stretch the muscles and joints, making them stronger. One of the best things about yoga is the fact that everyone can do it. To women, it means a flat stomach, more shapely legs and a graceful body. To men, it is a way of becoming stronger and more athletic. There are also specially-designed yoga classes for pregnant women or children suffering from mental disabilities, such as autism (孤独症). As for teenagers, meditation and simple breathing exercises can help them learn to calm down, relax and concentrate better. But teenagers under 16 are not supposed to do the body exercises as it could have a bad effect on their natural growth.24. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?A. Something sportsmen should not do in practising yoga.B. Basic skills that are required in performing yoga.C. The performance of the sportsmen at the First World Yoga Championships.D. The unique setting where yoga is performed.25. Why does the author mention Madonna and Ricky Martin in the fourth paragraph?A. To compare the differences between the young and the old.B. To describe the extensive popularity of yoga in the US.C. To emphasize the importance of practising yoga.D. To explain the strong influence of public figures in the US.26. Which statement is NOT true about yoga?A. It is a type of exercise which benefits the body and mind.B. It makes muscles and joints stronger by stretching.C. It contains exercise, breathing and meditation.D. It is similar to the sports like football or running.27. According to the passage, who does not need to pay special attention in practicing yoga?A. Women to be mother. B. Teenagers under 16.C. Adult men. D. Children with autism.CA child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better. A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered. There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar (奇怪的, 异常的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their cases were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl -friend. No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.28.The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is _ .A. repeated without any change B. treated as a jokeC. set in the present D. made some changes by the parent 29.The advantage claimed for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it _.A. develops their power of memoryB. makes them less fearfulC. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs30.The authors mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that _.A. fairy stories are still being made up B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy talesC. people try to modernize old fairy stories D. there is more concern for childrens fears nowadays31. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that _.A. they are full of imagination B. they make teachers of history difficult to teachC. they are not interesting D. they just make up the stories which are far from the truthDMillions of families around the world have been given a helping hand out of poverty by micro-credits. These very small loans, usually less than US$200, have enabled the very poorest people to set up or expand businesses and become self-sufficient.The micro-credit movement started with Professor Muhammad Yunus, who founded the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. Professor Yunus, who won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, used his own money to set up a bank to benefit the poorest people in Bangladeshfamilies living on less than US$1 a day. There are now hundreds of organizations around the world following his blueprint to help people escape from poverty. So how does the system work? Local microfinance institutions (MFIs) make contact with families and offer loans, usually to women, to enable them to start or expand a business. These are very poor people who would not normally be able to get credit, but as no collateral (抵押品) is required they can get micro-credits. They pay back the loan on a weekly basis, over six months to a year.A crucial aspect to the success of the micro-credit system is that receivers get local support. The MFIs educate local communities about ways to improve their lives, and offer practical support as well as collecting weekly loans payments. They encourage people to help each other, so that the whole community can pull itself out of poverty. MFIs may also help with literacy and health problems.Micro-credits are mainly given to women. Experience has shown that women are more motivated to improve their childrens lives and will spend the money they make on better nutrition and schooling for their children. This may be the first chance theyve had to contribute financially to the family, and their status in the home and the local community is raised. The micro-credit system is not charity. The payments are fixed-term loans and interest is charged. The costs of making such small loans, collecting them and giving personal support are high. This is reflected in the interest rates, which range from 15 to 35 percent. Despite this, the repayment rate is very high, between 95 and 98 percent, showing that micro-credit clients really value this opportunity to leave poverty behind.32. Micro-credits are offered to the poorest people around the world in order to _. A. make profits out of the poor B. support poor people out of poverty C. establish more micro-credit institutions D. promote the development of world economy33. Why are bank loans mainly made to women? A. Because they make more financial contribution to the family. B. Because they hold higher status in the home and community. C. Because they are more reliable and likely to repay the loan. D. Because they are more likely to spend the profits on their children.34. The high repayment rate of the loan suggests that _. A. people do hope to take advantage of the loan to get out of poverty B. it is easy to make money with the aid of micro-credits C. micro-credits are very popular with poor families D. most micro-credit clients keep their promises well35. The ridge(隆起) structure on a persons fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. _ 37 Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take. Finger-prints can be made very easily with printers ink. They can be recorded easily. 38 Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. 39 When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect(察觉) with the naked eye. 40 _ Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.A. Special techniques are used to “develop” them.B. A fingerprint is an impression of the friction ridges of all part of the finger.C. It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed.D. With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time.E. A latent (潜在的) print is the chance reproduction of the friction ridges deposited on the surface of an item.F. His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident.G. Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. A few years ago, my younger brother and I went to Norfolk, Virginian by plane. 41 , before we took off, we heard the pilots voice throughout the plane. “Sorry, ladies and gentlemen. We have no 42 on the plane. We have a generator (发电机), and we are going to 43 the engines with it. We will 44 in the air and head to Norfolk, and see what happens.”See what happens? We are going to get up in the air, and see what happens? At this point, one woman started crying. “Oh, no! We are going to 45 !” There were sighs of desperation and 46 spreading throughout the plane, and we hadnt even 47 yet. Thirty minutes passed and we were still 48 there. Then the voice of the pilot came over again, “Ladies and gentlemen, I know you are 49 , so are we. We only have one engine going right now, and it is working double time.”There was crying 50 we had walked into a grave (坟墓). But, the pilot told us our one engine was working double time, and his 51 was to get up in the air, and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air and 52 happened. We arrived in Norfolk and everyone 53 for still being alive.Although I do sincerely like to have a plan 54 “see what happens”, which really isnt such a bad life strategy (策略), all too often, I would see people pursuing their goals 55 with inaction just because they dont have 56 success. Actually, success will never be guaranteed. The 57 thing that you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. If you are planning to learn a new skill, get up in the air, and see what happens! It might not be as 58 as you thought. You might be smarter than you thought. It could be 59 ! So dont stay there trying nothing just because there is no 60 of guaranteed success.41. A. HopefullyB. Excitedly
