Chapter 1 When I grow upTeaching Procedures1. Introduce the topic of jobs.What does your father do?What does your mother do?Get some answers from around the class, then ask pupils to work in pairs to find out the jobs of each others parents.2. Write the names of the eight jobs on the board: a dentist, an engineer, an inventor, a fashion designer, an astronaut, a vet, a pilot, a film director. Using the flash cards, teach the vocabulary for what a person doing that job does in his /her work. Stick the flash card next to the job.3. Ask pupils to look carefully and to remember what the jobs are. Take down the flash cards. Shuffle them. Read them out one by one and ask pupils to come out and stick the flash card next to the correct job.4. Show pupils the names of the children written on the drawings of themselves doing a job.The reporters from the school newspaper are interviewing the winners of the “My dream job” drawing competition.5. Go through the conversation between the reporter and Charlie with the class to teach the use of want to talk about future intentions.6. Divide the class into six groups. Tell each group the name of a character in Part B. Give them one minute to prepare what they are going to say.7. Take the role of the reporter yourself and ask each group what do you want to be?Teaching Procedures1. The following listening material is included on the CD and in the Super E-Book. You can play it before teaching Part C to arouse pupils interest in the theme of the reading text.2. Introduce Mimi and ask pupils to read the first paragraph.5. Read the next paragraph with pupils.6. Tell pupils to read the third paragraph once silently to find out if Mimi likes her new job.7. Ask pupils What does Mimi have to do if she ants to be a vet?Say yes, she has to study very hard. She cant be a vet unless she works hard.10. Ask pupils to read the rubric for Part D and to look at the worked example. Ask pupils to explain to you what they should do.11. Check pupils answers to Part D.Teaching Procedures1. Ask a few pupils what they want to do when they grow up.What do you want to do when you grow up?Is it a difficult job?What do you have to do?When they tell you, reformulate their answer to use unless, e.g. Thats right. You cant be a police officer unless youre fit.2. Read through the conversation on page 5 of the Pupils Book. Say Tim wants to be a fashion designer. What about the other two children? What jobs do they have in their thought bubbles? Yes, one wants to be an astronaut and the other one wants to be a tour guide.3. Get pupils into groups. Tell them to take turns to be Miss So, Kitty and Joe.4. Ask pupils to work in pairs and to choose one of the jobs. Their partner asks then what they want to be and makes a comment about what they have to do or be to do that job.5. Go round the class checking that pupils are using unless correctly.6. Check pupils answers to Part E.Teaching Procedures1. Ask pupils to bring dictionaries to class, or arrange for computer access for pupils.2. Tell pupils about the job of teaching and write the underlined words on the board.3. Ask pupils what other jobs do you think are challenging/ exciting/ rewarding?Accept all answers as these are pupils opinions.4. Ask pupils to read the descriptions of the vet and the film director jobs. Point out the features of these personal descriptions by telling pupils to read the language notes on page 7 of the Pupils Book.5. Tell pupils to read the information about John Smith the engineer and complete his job description following the models given,6. Check pupils answers to Part F.Teaching Procedures1. Remind pupils of the childrens display on their dream jobs in Parts A and B. Tell them they are going to hear a son
