Dogs chosen for such training must show good disposition, intelligence, physical fitness, and responsibility. At the age of about 14 months, a guide dog begins an intensive course which lasts from 3 to 5 months. The dog learns to watch traffic and to cross streets safely. The most important part of the training course is a four-week program in which the guide dog and its future owner learn to work together. However, many blind people are unsuited by personality to work dogs. Only about a tenth of the blind find a guide dog useful.Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.11. What is the main idea of the passage?a. the selection of guide dogs b. types of guide dogsc. how to live with guide dogs d. the training of guide dogsPassage 2The term “weak eyesight” is generally used to refer to nearsighted eyes. People who are nearsighted can see well at a short range, but something very far away is likely to be unclear. The term “weak eyesight” is misleading, for in nearsighted eyes the lens镜头 of the eye is actually too strong. The nearsighted lens is so powerful that it focuses the light coming into the eye too quickly. The image is formed in the eyes, which contain the optical视力的,光学的 nerves. Nearsightedness is common, and its growth may be gradual. Often the unclearness of distant objects is so slight at first that a person may not recognize the condition. Nearsightedness is frequently discovered first at school. It is here that a student first realizes the difficulty of seeing words on the blackboard, whereas others in the class have no trouble reading the blackboard at all. Nearsightedness can easily be corrected. You just need a pair of glasses called a “minus” lens which can decrease the power of the lens of the eyes.Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard.14. What is this passage mainly about? a. the amazing minus lens b. the working of the eyes c. the cause and correction of nearsightedness d. how to recognize nearsightedness15. The image is formed in the eyes, which contain the optical nerves d. eventually, nearsighted people lose the ability to see at close distancePassage 3 An important part of reading is word analysis, that is, looking at the meanings of parts of words. Many English words have been formed by combining parts of older English, Greek, and Latin words. If you know the meanings of some of these word parts, you can often guess the meanings of an unfamiliar English word, particularly when reading a sentence or paragraph. For example, “report” is formed from “re” which means back and “port” which means carry. “Scientist” comes from “sci” which means know and “ist” which means one who. “Port” is the stem of the word which is the basic part on which groups of related words are built. “Re” is a prefix which is attached to the beginning of a stem. “Ist” is a suffix which comes at the end of a word. Generally a prefix will change the meaning of the word, and a suffix will change the part of speech. Word analysis isnt always enough to give you the precise definition of a word you meet in a reading passage, but often you can continue reading without stopping to use a dictionary.Questions 17 to 20 are based on
