He told of different men and of strange civilisations (文明), broken up by long dark ages in between. In his view, what is called the present time is no more than a moment in human history and we are just the First Men. In two billion years from now, there will be the Eighteenth or Last Men. However, most of our ideas about the future are really very short-sighted. Perhaps we can see some possibilities for the next fifty years, but what about the next hundred or the next thousand or the next million years? Thats much more difficult. When men and women lived by hunting 50, 000 years ago, how could they even begin to picture modern life? Yet to men of 50, 000 years from now, we may seem as primitive (原始的)in our ideas as the Stone Age hunters do to us. Perhaps they will spend their days gollocking to make new spundels, or struggling with their balalators through the cribe. These words, which I have just made up, stand for things and ideas that we simply cant think of. So why bother even to try imagining life far in the future7 Here are two reasons. First, unless we remember how short our own lives are compared with the whole human history, we are likely to think that our own interests are much more important than they really are. If we make the earth a poor place to live on because we are careless or greedy (贪婪)or quarrelsome, our grandchildren will not bother to think of excuses for us. Second, by trying to escape from present interests and imagine life far in the future, we may arrive at quite fresh ideas that we can use ourselves. For example, if we imagine that in the future men give up farming, we can think of trying it now. So set your imagination free when you think about the future.36. The mention of Stapledons book in the opening paragraph _. A. serves as a description of human history B. serves as an introduction to the discussion C. shows a disagreement of views D. shows the popularity of the book37. The passage discusses men and women 50, 000 years ago and 50, 000 years from now in order to show that _. A. human history is extremely long B. life has changed a great deal C. it is useless to plan for the next 50 years D. it is difficult to tell what will happen in the future38. Spundels and balalators are used in the passage to refer to _. A. tools used in farming B. ideas about modern life C. unknown things in the future D. hunting skills in the Stone Age39. According to the writer, imagining the future will _. A. serve the interests of the present and future generations B. enable us to better understand human history C. help us to improve farming D. make life worth livingB Over the past few years, people seem to have become tired of being told what they can eat. They also have taken too much advice that doesnt seem effective. They want to hear messages abouthealthy food. They are understandably worried about some food industry practices and problems. The food industry puts money-making first. Buyers and companies have been less informed on food safety than they should have been. The food industry defends itself. It says that it tries to provide as good a product as possible at low prices, as cost is a major consideration in buying food. It is the buyers who are to blame. They are waking up to the hidden costs of cheaper food. Chicken burgers, for example, may have only a little chicken in them. The increasing organic (有机的) food market shows that people prepare to pay more for fruits and vegetables that havent been grown purely for its outside look and money business. There is now a new kind of food called functional food. It contains so-called beneficial (有益的) additives (添加剂), such as fruit drinks with added Vitamin C. It is believed that adding those additives makes a product healthier. In fact, this unnatural food will become a problem in the future. If a mother-to-be wants to protect her unborn baby from illness, she needs to eat a special breakfast to which certains additives have been added. Yet she can get these things much more cheaply from other healthier foods, like orange juice or green vegetables. We shouldnt be led to believe that we need to eat these special, expensive products to be healthy when most of the good things we need are found in cheaper natural foods. People buy as much fresh organic food as possible. They believe that future studies will show that eating organically will make us healthier. People also enjoy them more and feel strongly like supporting the organic farmers cause.40. According to the passage, people are now paying more attention to _.41. In the opinion of the writer, functional food will _.42. Adding extra things into the food will make it _.43. What is the writer trying to tell us by this passage? Chinese pinyin The students of Class 2 had a discussion about whether it would be necessary to start learning English from childhood._参考答案必修5Module 1听力材料Text 1M: When shall I go on holiday?W: When do you want to go? Text 5 How does television affect our lives? It can be helpful to those who carefully choose the programmes and harmful to those who watch it too much. In China, many people worry that children and young people are watching too many television programmes. A survey of 300 youngsters in Shanghai last year showed that on average, they spent half of their free time, i.e. two and a half hours, watching television. And they spent two-thirds of an hour reading stories. Another survey of school-age children in Wuhan found that half of the students saidthey read very little. During the Athens Olympic Games, tens of millions of Chinese viewers stayed up late to watch the opening ceremonies and other programmes. And television is quickly taking the place of printed material as the major source of news for most Chinese. A recent survey in Beijing found that 63% of those surveyed got their news from news programmes on TV.答案1-5 ABBCC6-10 BCABC11-12 AC13. children and young peop
