General analysisIts the first period of this unit and the main topic is about the weather which isnt mentioned in the last unit. Therefore, many new words should be learned. At the same time, the dialogue tells students more about how to use the present continuous tense to talk on the phone and comminute with others. .Students background As the topic is about weather and trip which students are quite interested, they may be willing to practice in class. Whats more, the present continuous tense has been learned in the last unit, so using it in listening and speaking will be not too difficult for them. Teaching objectives1. Knowledge aimsTo grasp the useful important words and expressions about weather.To use the present continuous tense to listen and speak on the phone. 2. Ability aimEnable the students to talk about weather and get to know how to make a phone call in English.3. Emotion aimLet students know about different weather in different places in the world. Teaching aidsA computer, a projector and a tape recorder. Teaching procedureStep 1 Leading-in Greet and play the song of the TV show “Daddy, where are we going?” with some photos of the show on PPT. T: Do you like the show? S: Yes. T: Whats its name? S: Daddy, where are we going? T: What are they doing? S: They are having a trip. T: What do they wear? S1: Raincoats. T: So hows the weather? S2: Its raining. T: Yeah. Thats our topic today.Step 2 Vocabulary and structures Use some photos of the show with weather signs on the top. T: Who are they? S: Cindy and her father. T: Whats in Cindys hand? S1: An umbrella. T: So hows the weather? S2: Its raining. T: Can you see the sign? Where can we see it? S3: On weather report. T: What does it mean? S4: Rainy. T: Very good. So we can say “Its rainy.” Are you clear? S: Yes. Show other signs and photos to help students learn the new words and sentences used to talk about weather. T: Look here. The nouns turn into adjectives. Whats the rule? S: With a “y” T: Great. Let students read the words and use the signs to check their learning. Step 3 Pair-work Show a map from weather report and learn the cities names: Toronto, Moscow and Boston. T: Hows the weather in Toronto? S1: Its cloudy. T: Whats the weather like in Moscow? S2: Its snowing. S3: Its snowy. Ask students to do pair-work by using the expressions and volunteer to show.Step 4 Listening T: Do you want to go to the cities? S: Yes. T: We cant go there now. But our friend, Peter, goes there. And hes calling his family to say what the weather is like. Lets see it together. Listen and finish Activity 1a & 1b on Page 37.Step 5 Speaking Show two photos of the TV show to review the present continuous tense. Tell students how to describe a trip about weather and activities on the phone. Ask students to make phone calls with their partners.Step 6 Writing T: Cindy is having a trip with her father and friends. So she describes it for you.But some words are lost. Can you help her to finish it? S: Yes. (Fill in the blanks.) Check the answer. T: What about you? Imagine now youre having a trip with your family or your friends. Write a small passage to describe it. Require students to include the 5-wh questions in their writing. Encourage students to read their texts and praise them.Step 7 Consolidation T: In the world, there is an interesting country. All the people there like talking about weather very much. Which country is it? S: The UK. T: Yes. Lets see why. Read the passage about English culture together with students.Step 8 Conclusion Sum up the main knowledge of the class.
