If you think so, youre not alone, because energy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession.“Energy independence” and its rhetorical (修辞的) companion “energy security” are, however, slippery concepts that are rarely though throughWhat is it we want independence from, exactly? Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oilBut there are reasons that we buy all that old from elsewhere. The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy runningYes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流)of biofuel(生物燃料)available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.Second, Americans have basically decided that they dont really want to produce all their own oilThey value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroadVast areas of the United States are off-limits to oil exploration and production in the name of environmental protectionTo what extent are Americans really willing to endure the environmental impacts of domestic energy production in order to cut back imports?Third, there are benefits to tradeIt allows for economic efficiency, and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefitAnd although you dont read about this much, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries. There is no question that the United States imports a great deal of energy and, in fact, relies on that steady flow to maintain its economyWhen that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher pricesAt the same time, we obtain massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when we engage in energy trade around the world.25What does the author say about energy independence for America? AIt sounds very attractive BIt ensures national security CIt will bring oil prices down DIt has long been everyones dream.26Why does America rely heavily on oil imports? AIt wants to expand its storage of crude oil(原油). BIts own oil reserves are quickly running out. CIt wants to keep its own environment undamaged. DIts own oil production falls short of demand27What does the author say about oil trade? AIt proves profitable to both sidesBIt improves economic efficiency CIt makes for economic prosperityDIt saves the cost of oil explorationC There could be an oceans worth of water more than 300 miles under the Earths surface that equals the known water content across the entire planet. Findings published in the latest issue of the journal, Nature show that water was found in a sample of ringwoodite, a stone formed under extreme pressure inside the Earths mantle (地幔).The ringwoodite discovery was made by Professor Graham Pearson of the University of Alberta. When Pearson”s team examined a seemingly worthless brown diamond they had uncovered, they found the ringwoodite sample within , which contained about 1.5 percent water. However, Pearson and his team acknowledge that the finding, the first of its kind, does not completely settle the water theory. In an accompanying Nature article, University of Bayreuth geochemist, Hans Keppler, cautions that no firm conclusions can be made based on the single ringwoodite sample. But Pearson himself is now convinced, telling the Edmonton Journal, “What you can definitely say from our finding is that there are oases of water -wet spots in the deep Earth. Now if you extrapolate (推断)it to the whole of this area we call the transition zone, it means there might be the same mass of water as what is held in all of the world s oceans.”If Pearson is correct, the presence of water deep beneath the Earths surface could help scientists better understand the shifting of tectonic(地壳构造上的) plates, which may be thinned and corroded (侵蚀)by the existence of water. As to the existence of the ringwoodite sample itself, Pearson and his team say it was probably pushed to the Earth s surface by a volcanic eruption. So, where did all this water, if it actually exists, come from? Pearson says it may have been sucked down beneath the Earth s surface as tectonic plates shifted.28. According to the text, the water in the ringwoodite sample proves that _ in the deep Earth. Ringwoodite samples can usually be found in brown diamonds. B. The ringwoodite sample could help scientists better understand the shifting of tectonic plates. C. A. supportiveB. objective C. cautiousD. opposed31. The water probably came from _ if it actually exists.A. rainwater accumulated for a long timeB. water pulled down when tectonic plates shiftedC. water pulled down during the formation of the desertD. water pulled down when earthquakes happenedDEDGEWOOD-Every morning at Dixie Heights High School, customers pour into a special experiment: the districts first coffee shop run mostly by students with special learning needs. Well before classes start, students and teachers order Lattes, Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates. Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia. Not that it was easy. Chevaliers first problem to overcome was product-related. Should schools be selling coffee? What about sugar content? Kenton County Food Service Director Ginger Gray helped. She made sure all the drinks, which use non-fat milk, fell within nutrition (营养) guidelines. The whole school has joined in to help. Teachers agreed to give up their lounge (休息室) in the mornings. Art students painted the name of the shop on the wall. Business students designed the paychecks. The basketball team helped pay for cups.32. What is the text mainly about? A. A best-selling coffee.
