Researchers at the University of Essex in Colchester are working on the robotic fish as part of a 2.5million EU-funded project to find new ways of monitoring water waste. Each fish will be about 50cm long, 15cm high and 12cm wide. They will be packed with pollution sensors that can electronically smell harmful chemicals in the water.Scientists have developed “swarm(群)intelligence techniques” which allow the fish to work as a team without humans. The robotic fish will communicate with each other using wi-fi as they seek out areas of pollution. They work out where they are with inbuilt GPS systems and artificial intelligence software will enable them to move without the need for a human operator: they will only warn staff if areas of pollution are found.A fish that finds pollution sends the data of the location to others.“Each school will contain five fish, and they will constantly monitor for pollutants,” said Dr. Dongbing Gu, who is leading the research. “When they find something, they will send a message to the rest of the school, who will then gather in the area to take readings.”The fish move their bodies up and down like wavesdriven by motorsand use fins and a tail to change direction. It is hoped they will travel at speeds of up to half a metre per second.Working models could be available within 18 months. Different sensors will be fitted to hunt for different pollutants(污染物). The data could be used to build a “real time” 3D map of areas of pollution in the water, allowing operators to determine the best way to clean up the area. The fish will initially be used in ports to monitor leaks from large ships, but Dr Gu said the same system could be used in the Thames. Researchers hope the robotic fish will be able to spend up to 24 hours in the water before needing to be recharged.56. The purpose of the robotic fish project is to _. A. find out whether inbuilt GPS systems are usefulB. find new ways to monitor water waste C. prove that robotic fish can be sent into the Thames D. test the speed of the robotic fish57. Robotic fish can find harmful pollutants by using _. A. GPS systemsB. a 3D pollution map C. pollution sensors D. fins and a tail58. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A. The robotic fish have been used in ports as well as in the Thames.B. It takes 24 hours for robotic fish to be recharged.C. The Cancun was another important conference to move forward the “Bali Road Map” negotiations after the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen last year, which failed to reach a legally binding treaty(有约束力的条约)for the years beyond 2012.Four UN climate talks had been held since Copenhagen conference, three in German city Bonn and one in Chinas Tianjin, with some progress having been made in climate payments and forest protection. The first round of United Nations climate change talks in Bonn lasted from April 9 to 12, with different countries agreeing to hold two more meetings in 2010. The talks were delayed due to differences between developing and developed countries on how to deal with the final results of the Copenhagen conference. The second round of talks was held from May 31 to June 11 with “imbalance” becoming the key word. The disagreement could not cover some progress made during the past 12 days, even it was just a little. The progress was made in adding more details of how a system can work in practice, including climate funds and transfer of clean technologies. The third round of UN climate talks held from Aug 2 to 6. Representatives discussed a draft text and advanced slowly on emission(排放)cuts promises and other issues. The fourth round of talks was held in Chinas Tianjin, as the parties have made some progress in climate payments and forest protection, each side “is very close” to agreeing with each other to build a climate fund. Before the COP 16, experts said that optimism would remain for significant progress in negotiations on the “Bali Map Road,” though an international community would agree it might be difficult to achieve a legally binding agreement. The conference gathered the participants from governments, businesses, non-governmental organizations and research institutions from 180 countries. It is the penultimate opportunity for parties to reach a legally-binding treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol(京都议定书)which will be no longer valid in 2012. 64. According to the passage, the second round of talks lasting from May 31 to June 11 _.A. was a total failureB. got limited progressC. reached a legally binding treatyD. was the most successful round of talks65. Which of the following may be the result of the fourth round of talks held in Tianjin? A. Different sides set up a climate fund. B. Different countries signed a legally binding treaty. C. Different countries agreed to hold two more meetings in 2010.D. Different sides seem very likely to agree to set up a climate fund.66. What does the underlined word “penultimate” in the last paragraph mean?A. The second. B. The last. C. The last but one. D. The last but two.67. It can be inferred from the passage that _.A. it might be difficult for the UN to reach an agreement on certain issuesB. the Copenhagen conference aiming to reach a treaty reached its goalC. the Cancun conference was held to reduce cultural differences between countriesD. sixteen rounds of UN climate talks have been held since last yearDOver the past summer, many young Chinese students reportedly downloaded and watched online courses given by top universities from the US and UK. Many people welcome this as a new form of acquiring knowledge, while some see this as an opportunity to learn from these top-ranked universities without paying the high fee.By talking to some Chinese friends who enjoyed those online courses, I find that what they like about those courses is largely the free, interactive and humorous atmosphere in American university classes. Some Chinese professors, especially young ones, have already taken steps to reform course structure, provide more class discussion and adopt various evaluations rather than one final examination to determine students grades. However, the Chinese tradition of staying serious in the classroom remains the same. In some cases, the teacher just reads out the text directly from the textbook for the whole class period.I cannot agree more with those who attend these free online courses. Online courses offered by western universities will probably change the tradition of how the Chinese students learn things. However, these free courses cannot offer everything taught by those Western universities. Young Chinese can learn the methods and subjects, but there will always be a gap between watching it online and experiencing it in person. From my experience studying in the US, the most valuable lessons I have learned were not in class. My best source of learning was the motivation and encouragement from my classmates and friendsquestioning and arguing about theories and ideas. Or it was through my professors help during the one-on-one office hours. The most important experiences cannot be copied by watching a course through the computer screen.A latest report from the Community College Research Center at Columbia University suggests
