2. (3分) In general, its hard to spend enough time in both concentrating on lessons and taking part in social activities. But I wanted to succeed in both. I knew this would be a challenge but I didnt realize how difficult it was until my classes in the high school began,
I got on well with other girls. After school, I often had ice cream with them first instead of finishing my homework before it was time to hand it in, I always finished it the next day between classes.I knew it wasnt very good and the grades that I got showed I was not hard-working enough. I realized that I needed to find some kind of balance.
So I created a timetable that would divide my time between studying and relaxing. It was a good idea but I was only able to follow it for a few days because it made me under too much pressure.
Later, I tried another plan. Each week I listed everything that I had to get done during the week and the time by which I had to get it done. Then under the things I had to do, I made another list of things that I could do if I had time.
It worked really well. Ever since I have never missed any important things. At the same time, I enjoyed my spare time a lot.
Planning my time has been challenging, but I continue to do it. Im glad that Ive learned to balance things and it has helped prepare for what is coming after graduation.

3. (4分) TOKYO, JAPAN--What do you do when you see a cockroach (蟑螂)? Do you hit it with a newspaper? Do you step on it?
When researchers at Tokyo University see a cockroach, they take the remote control and make the cockroach turn around, run left or right, or go forward. These scientists are changing the cockroaches into robots. Each cockroach has a very small pack that has in it a microprocessor(微处理器).Then researchers can send signals from the remote control to the pack. The signals control the movements of the cockroaches.
Why does anyone want to control a cockroach? “Insects can do many things that people cant,” says Isao Shimoyama, head of robot research at Tokyo University. In a few years, he says, these robot insects will carry very small cameras. They will be able to move through earthquake rubble(瓦砾)to look for people or move under doors to find information about someone.
This may seem strange, but the Japanese government thinks the research is very important. The government is giving the scientists $ 5 million for this research.
First, the researchers breed (培育)hundreds of cockroaches. They use only the American cockroach because it is bigger and stronger than other cockroaches. Then they choose the best cockroaches and remove their wings and antennae(触须). They put small packs where the antennae were. The packs weigh about three grams, or about two times the weight of the cockroaches themselves. “Cockroaches are very strong,” says Ralph Holzer, who is a researcher at Tokyo University. “They can lift 20 times their own weight. ”
With a remote control, the scientists send signals to the packs. When a cockroach gets the signal, it moves. The problem is that the cockroaches dont always move in the right direction.
(1)The scientists are changing the cockroaches into robots because ______.
A . they want cockroaches to do things people can’t in the future
B . they want to control the movements of the cockroaches
C . they want cockroaches to take photos of the earthquakes
D . they want to send signals to the packs on the cockroaches
(2)What can cockroaches do to help people?
A . They can lift 20 times their own weight.
B . They can help people to carry very small cameras.
C . They can breed hundreds of cockroaches.
D . They can search for those people in rubble after an earthquake.
(3)Scientists control cockroaches’ movements ______.
A . by removing their wings
B . by sending signals from the remote control
C . by using very small cameras
D . by removing their antennae

As time goes by, are you still the same person you used to be? Many of you would think you are. But according to a new study, your personality can change greatly. You could be a completely different person at 77, compared to when you were a 14-year-old, reported The Huffington Post.
Psychologists(心理学家) at the UKs University of Edinburgh did the study on a group of Scottish people. The research found that almost everyones personality changed when they grow old. The findings are published in a journal called Psychology and Aging.
The research is based on a study that began in 1950. A group of teachers gave more than1, 200 14-year-old students personality tests. They tested six basic personality traits(个性特点): self-confidence, sense of responsibility, perseverance (耐性), strong wishes to win, creativity and moods.
In 2012, researchers successfully found 174 of those 1, 200 students, who were 77 years old on average at the time. They agreed to take a personality test similar to the one they had completed 63 years earlier.
Researchers then compared the then-and-now test results. They were surprised to find great changes to all six personality traits of these people. Moods and sense of responsibility had changed less. But there were still not too many similarities between the two results.
The younger and older self seemed to be totally different for each person. It was "as if the second tests had been given to different people," the studys authors noted.
In the past, personality was widely believed to be stable(稳定的). William James, the father of American psychology, said that personality is "set like plaster(石膏板) ." This new study may bring some fresh ideas to the theory(理论).

C . Personality
D . Working ability
(2)How many people did the test in 2012?
A . 77
B . 1,200
C . 174

B . The personality test studied six basic traits.
C . The 2012 personality test was very different from the original one.
D . The test results about creativity and mood did not change.
(4)What did William James believe?

Street Markets Around the World
There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them:
There are many “floating markets” in Asia; perhaps the most unusual is Thailand(泰国), at a place called Damned Saduak. It’s open from six in the morning to the noon every day. People sell fresh fruit from their boats.
Many Belgians(比利时人) say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. It’s the home of a colourful flower market. It’s open every day except Monday. On Monday, instead of flowers, there’s a wonderful bird market.
One of the world’s famous markets is in Mexico City(墨西哥城)—the Sonora Market. You can buy toys, birds, herbs and medicine. There’re all kinds of things. It’s open every day from early in the morning till late at night.
In England, every weekend, thousands of young people from all over London travel to the Camden Market—it’s the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there for fun.
