A night the earth didn t sleep Good morning professors today I m very pleased to have an opportunity to sharing my lessons with you The content of the lesson is the reading part of Senior English for China Student s Book 1 Unit 4 Earthquake I ll be ready to begin this lesson from four parts 1 Analyzing teaching Material 2 the teaching methods 3 the studying methods 4 the teaching procedures and while presenting these parts I will do the blackboard design properly Ok now I am going to start from the first part First let me introduce the teaching material This unit introduces something about earthquake The reading passage is the center of this unit The part of reading is a news report which introduces signs of impending earthquake in Tangshan damages to constructions people and livestocks caused by the earthquake and the rescue operation after the earthquake This lesson is divided into three parts pre reading reading and post reading These three parts are all aimed at improving students ability to read So these three parts can be learned in one lesson As the reading part is the main passage in this unit which outlines the theme of this unit so if the students can learn it well it will be helpful to make students learn the rest of this unit So I think the teaching aims of this lesson are the following 1 Knowledge aim know the genesis of earthquakes signs of impending earthquakes damages caused by earthquakes and urgent measure for earthquakes and rescue operation after the earthquakes 2 Ability aim Retell the text in their own words and grasp the use of attributive clause 3 Emotional aim make the students value their happy life they own now and help others in need In this lesson the important points of teaching are1 how to meet the needs and interests of most students and make them be active in class 2develop students ability of reading especially abilities of summary guessing the meaning of words and scanning Next what I will say is my teaching methods Before dealing with this lesson I ll do my best to carry out the following theories Make the Ss the real masters in class while the teacher himself acts as director Combine the language structures with the language functions Let the students receive some moral education while they are learning the English language In order to achieve the teaching aims above I will use these methods They are communicative approach task based watch and listen activity question and answer activity free discussion method pair work or individual work method and computer assisted Language Teaching Then I ll introduce the studying methods Students in high school have their own views and opinions They are not content with what they get from textbook They hope to gain more information and knowledge to broaden their horizons While modern education theories think that the procedure of gaining knowledge is more important than how much knowledge you have gained So in this lesson I will let the students read the passage with some questions and learn to conclude the main idea of the passage by themselves I will guide them to study independent and in groups In a word I will 1 Let the Ss pass observation imitation practice to study language2 Teach the students how to communicate with others and how to carry on cooperative study Finally I will introduce the last part teaching procedures I have designed 7 steps to train their ability of listening speaking reading and writing especially reading ability The first step is lead in Interest is the best teacher Therefore at the very beginning of the class I should spark the students mind to focus on the centre topic of earthquake I ll show some pictures about earthquakes to attract their attention and bring some questions 1Describe what you see in the picture and express your feeling when you see these pictures in English 2Inamgine your homes begin to shake and you must leave it away You have time to take only one thing what will you take Why 3What do you think will happen before an earthquake The second step is Reading for information I will let the students read the passage as quickly as they can and I will use the questions I have mentioned above and answer activity to help them get the main idea of each paragraph then ask them to use their own words to conclude the main ideas of each paragraph Purpose Improve the Ss fast reading skills like skimming reading and scanning reading Understand the general idea of each paragraph The third step is intensive reading I will let students read each paragraph silent or aloud carefully and answer some detailed questions For example how did soldiers help the rescue workers Purpose Further understand the text to find out some different sentences and details of the text Step 4 Retell the passage 1 I will list out the general idea of each paragraph which the Ss have concluded in fast reading 2 Encouraging Ss to use their own words to retell the passage according to the general ideas Purpose I want to check if my students really understand the whole text and if they master what I mean to tell them in this class What s more I want to make the students practice their oral English through retelling Step 5 Solving difficult language problems through reading It s important for language learners to learn important rules of grammar and use these rules to solve problems in reality In the previous process of reading the students must come across some difficult language obstacles so it s necessary for us to discuss and explain This period of time belongs to students They can ask any questions they come across in the process of learning I ll explain the questions and difficulties The purpose of this is improving the students questioning spirit and dealing with the difficulties And then I will continue the next step point out the language points I will show the important words phrases and sentences
