A B C 和 D 中 选出最佳选项 并在答题卡上将该项 涂黑 A Dear Water Use It Wisely More and more water is getting wasted each day I want to help out and teach people how to conserve water Please continue reading because your organization is very influential I had an idea that you could send some workers from your organization to schools all around the world and they could inform the students about water usage Did you know that every minute 1 000 000 000 one billion tons of water falls to the earth from rainfall We are lucky to have rainfall water It helps fill up our lakes There is about 326 000 000 000 000 000 000 326 quintillion gallons of water on Earth Yes this is tons but it is getting wasted I want to keep this number BIG Everyone needs water so why waste it I think it is very irresponsible to let the water run when you are not at home We can use water with respect by making good choices Take a shower instead of a bath use an automatic dishwasher instead of hand washing You can buy Earth Friendly Cleaner Spray so that our drinking water will not be polluted If your washer isn t full then don t start it With water being wasted every day by the time we get to the 3000 s we are going to have to survive on milk and juice Won t that be boring That means we will have to give our dogs a bowl of juice instead of water with their food I mean come on we re 第 5 页 共 12 页 talking real life here Water wasting needs to come to a stop and without delay Water Use It Wisely PLEASE inform people about their water usage It plays a big role in my life It would be really great if you take part in spreading the news about this Thanks tons An impatient fourth grader waiting for a reply Mya Oleksiak 56 Water Use It Wisely is most probably A an organization B a person s name C the title of a magazine D a government department 57 It can be inferred from the second paragraph that A water is not effectively saved B rainfall is the main source of fresh water C the amount of water from rainfall is increasing D we have 326 quintillion gallons of water each year 58 According to the passage what is a proper way to save water A Washing dishes by hand B Starting the washer with a full load C Feeding our pets with juice and milk D Encouraging people to use cleaner spray 59 This is basically a letter of A comfort B complaint C appealD recommendation B A Lesson from the Elder Grandfather was an elder Cherokee Native American who had a wrinkled nut brown face and kind dark eyes His grandson often came in the evening to sit on his knee and ask the many questions that children ask One day the grandson came to his grandfather with a look of anger on his face and the following story Father and I went to the store today and because I helped him he bought me a present a jack knife I went outside to wait for father and to admire my new knife in the sunlight Some town boys came by and saw me They surrounded me and started saying bad things They called me dirty and stupid and said that I should not have such a fine knife The largest of these boys pushed me back and I fell over one of the other boys I dropped my knife and one of them picked it up and they all ran away laughing I hate them I hate them all The elder Cherokee with eyes that have seen too much lifted his grandson s face so his eyes looked into the boy s face Grandfather said Let me tell you a story I too at times have felt a great hate for those who have taken so much with no sorrow for what they do But hate wears you down and does not hurt your enemy It is like drinking poison and wishing your enemy would die I have struggled with these feelings many times It is as if two wolves are inside me It is a terrible fight One wolf is good and does no harm He lives in harmony with all around him and does not take offense when no offense was intended It will only fight when it is right to do so and in the right way This wolf stands for joy peace love hope sharing modesty kindness friendship sympathy generosity truth and faith The other wolf is full of anger The littlest thing will set off his fiercest temper He fights everyone all the time for no reason He cannot think because his anger and hate are so much It is helpless anger for his anger will change nothing This wolf represents fear envy greed self pity guilt lies false pride and superiority Sometimes it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me for both of them try to control my spirit This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person too The boy looked into his grandfather s eyes and asked Which wolf will win The old Cherokee simply replied 第 6 页 共 12 页 The one you feed 60 The boy was angry because A he was not satisfied with his present B his back was badly injured in a fight C he had waited for his father for too long D his jack knife had been taken away by some boys 61 The angry wolf would probably be described as A aggressive B sympathetic C modest D unsuccessful 62 We can learn from the third paragraph that A hate is healthy B hate hurts oneself C hate is complicated D hate harms one s enemies 63 What did Grandfather mean by saying The one you feed in the last paragraph A We should feed the two wolves equally B Living in harmony with others is important C Our feelings should be expressed at the right time D The choices we make determine who we will become C Cell Phones Are the New Cigarettes When you get in your car you reach for it When you re at work you take a break to have a moment alone with it When you get into a lift you play with it Cigarettes Cup of coffee No it s the third most addictive thing in modern life the cell phone And experts say it is becoming more difficult for many people to curb their longing to hug it more tightly than most of their personal relationships With its shiny surface its smooth and satisfying touch its air of complexity the cell phone connects us to the world even as it disconnects us from people three feet away In just the past couple of years the cell phone has challenged individuals employers phone makers and counselors 顾问 in ways its inventors in the late 1940s never imagined The costs are becoming even more evident and I don t mean just the monthly bill Dr Chris Knippers a counselor at the Betty Ford Center in Southern California reports that the overuse of cell phones has become a social problem not much different from other harmful addictions a barrier to one on one personal contact and an escape from reality Sounds extreme but we ve all witnessed the evidence The person at a restaurant who talks on the phone through an entire meal ignoring his kids around the table the woman who talks on the phone in the car ignoring her husband the teen who texts messages all the way home from school avoiding contact with kids all around him Is it just rude or is it a kind of unhealthiness And pardon me but how is this improving the quality of life Jim Williams an industrial sociologist based in Massachusetts notes that cell phone addiction is part of a set of symptoms in a widening gulf of personal separation He points to a study by Duke University researchers that found one quarter of Americans say they have no one to discuss their most important personal business with Despite the growing use of phones e mail and instant messaging in other words Williams says studies show that we don t have as many friends as our parents Just as more information has led to less wisdom more acquaintances via the Internet and cell phones have produced fewer friends he says If the cell phone has truly had these effects it s because it has become very widespread Consider that in 1987 there were only 1 million cell phones in use Today something like 300 million Americans carry them They far outnumber wired phones in the United States 64 Which of the following best explains the title of the passage 第 7 页 共 12 页 A Cell phone users smoke less than they used to B More people use cell phones than smoke cigarettes C Cell phones have become as addictive as cigarettes D Using cell phone is just as cool as smoking cigarettes 65 The underlined word curb in Paragraph 2 means A control B ignore C develop D rescue 66 The example of a woman talking on the phone in the car supports the idea that A women use cell phones more often than men B talking on the phone while driving is dangerous C cell phones make one on one personal contact easy D cell phones do not necessarily bring people together D Traffic Management Traffic lights are key tools for regulating traffic How They are not however perfect Drivers exchange the traffic jams that would happen at unmanaged crossings for a pattern of stop go movement that can still be annoying and which bums more fuel than a smooth passage would Creating such a smooth passage means adjusting a vehicle s speed so that it always arrives at the lights when they are green That is theoretically possible but practically hard Roadside signs wired to traffic lights can help get the message across a couple hundred metres from a crossing but such signs are expensive and are not widespread Margaret Martonosi and Emmanouil Koukoumidis at Princeton University and Li Shiuan Peh at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology however have an idea that could make the process cheaper and more effective Instead of a hardwired network of signs they propose to use mobile phone applications For a driver to benefit lie must load the team s software named SignalGuru into his phone and then put it on a special thing attached to the inside of his car s windscreen with the camera lens 镜头 pointing forward SignalGuru is designed to detect traffic lights and track their status as red yellow or green It broadcasts this information to other phones in the area that are fitted with the same software and if there are enough of them the phones thus each know the status of most of the lights around town Using this information SignalGuru is able to calculate the traffic light schedule for the area and suggest the speed at which a driver should travel in order to avoid red lights Tests in Cambridge Massachusetts where five drivers were asked to follow the same route for three hours and in Singapore where eight drivers were asked to follow one of two routes for 30 minutes revealed that SignalGuru was capable of predicting traffic light activity with an accuracy of 98 2 and 96 3 respectively in the two cities This was particularly impressive because in Cambridge the lights shifted roughly half way through the test from their unbusy schedule to their afternoon traffic schedule while in Singapore lights are adaptive using detectors fixed under the road to determine how much traffic is present and thus when a signal should change In neither case was SignalGuru fooled Fuel consumption fell too by about 20 SignalGuru thus reduces both annoyance and fuel use and makes going back and forth to work a slightly les
