The law went into effect on January 1.California is not the first American state with such a law, but it has the largest of illegal immigrants. More than a million people began to request licenses shortly after the new state law went into effect. Among them was Christian Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado entered the United States from El Salvador. (萨尔瓦多)eight years ago without permission from the U. S. government. Some call such people illegal immigrants Others call them undocumented immigrants. Mr. Alvarado thinks it so exciting, for he has been waiting for the license for a long time. But some are worried that their personal information will be used to find them and deport them. Armando Botello is a spokesman for the California Department of Motor Vehicles,or DMV. He says people should not be afraid, for such information will not be shared. The new licenses are the same as licenses given to citizens except that they have the words Federal Limits Apply. That means the license cannot be used to travel on an airplane or enter a federal building. Ana Garcia, working at the Central American Resource Center, says some illegal immigrants fear those words will be used to abuse them. Civil rights groups say the police and others will not. Dan Schnur,a political scientist at the University of Southern California, said that the main argument against the new law is that it rewards illegal behavior. But Professor Schnur argued that young, white Americans generally support immigration reform, including giving drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. “Its simply because they grew up in a much more multicultural society than their parents or their grandparents did. ” Professor Schnur says he believes the changes in beliefs about illegal immigrants that have taken place in California will spread throughout the United States.1. Why did the new law make Mr. Alvarado excited?A. Because he got his driving license as a legal immigrant.B. Because he became a legal immigrant of California.C. I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eightmile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness. From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (忧郁) disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothys classroom, I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner” (lunch). In case you dont know, poke greens are a weedtype plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the oneandonly steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph.D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom (传家宝), but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.61“Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph 1 refers to _ A. a program directed by Dorothy B. a course given by the author C. an activity held by the students D. an organization sponsored by Union College62In the journey, the author was most disappointed at seeing _ A. the long track B. the poor houses C. the same train D. the winding road63Upon arriving at the classroom, the author was cheered up by _ A. a warm welcome B. the sight of poke greens C. Dorothys latest projects D. a big dinner made for her64What can we know about Dorothy from the last paragraph? A. She was invited to a celebration at a restaurant. B. She got a pen as a gift from the author. C. She passed the required assessment. D. She received her Ph.D. degree.65What does the author mainly intend to tell us? A. Whatever you do, you must do it carefully. B. Whoever you are, you deserve equal treatment. C. However poor you are, you have the right to education. D. Wherever you are, you can accomplish your achievement.【要点综述】 Dorothy在一所条件非常差的学校获得了很大的成功,这说明一个人获得成功与他在什么地方没有直接关系,最重要的是要付出努力。61. B细节理解题。 根据文章第一段第三句可知,Early Childhood Development是作者教的一门课程。62. Solving it quickly is a terrific conversation starter. I usually ask people to try it first. They just turn the cube over in their hands, not even knowing where to begin. Thats exactly what it was like for me to learn how to read. Letters and words were out of order. Nothing made sense because I am dyslexic. The Rubiks Cube has made me believe that sometimes you have to take a few steps back in order to move forward. This was a reflection of my own life when I had to leave public school after the fourth grade. Its embarrassing to admit, but I still couldnt always spell my full name correctly. As a fifth-grader at a new school specializing in whats called “language-processing disorder”, I had to start over. I then spent the next four years learning how to learn and find strategies that allowed me to return to my districts high school with the ability to communicate my ideas and express my intelligence. Now, I can easily solve the 555. I discover that just before it is solved, a problem can look like a mess, and then suddenly you can find the solution. Early in my Rubiks career, I became so frustrated that I took the cube apart and rebuilt it. I believe that sometimes you have to look deeper and find answers in unexpected places. The Rubiks cube taught me that to accomplish something big, it helps to break it down into small pieces. I learned that its important to spend a lot of time thinking, to try to find connections and patterns. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created:the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice. You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial(长期的) victims and martyrs(殉道者). They are leaves tossed(摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather. You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence. If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks. In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.51. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they_. About the size of a microwave oven, its pedestrianfriendly, too, waiting for book lovers next to a sidewalk in Palm Beach Country Estates, along the northern boundary of Palm Beach Gardens. Its a library built with love.A year ago, shortly after Janey Henriksen saw a Brian Williams report about the Little Free Library organization, a Wisconsinbased nonprofit that aims to promote literacy and build a sense of community in a neighborhood by making books freely available, she announced to her family of four, “Thats what were going to do for our spring break!”Son Austin, now a 10thgrader, didnt see the point of building a library that resembles a mailbox. But Janey insisted, and husband Peter unwillingly got to work. The 51yearold owner of a ship supply company modified a small wooden house that hed built years earlier for daughter Abbies toy horses, and made a door of glass. After adding the librarys final touches (装点), the family hung a signboard on the front, instructing users to “take a book, return a book,” and making the Henriksen library, now one of several hundred like it nationwide and among more than 2,500 in the world, the only Little Free Library in Palm Beach County. They stocked it with 20 or so books theyd already read, a mix of science fiction, reference titles, novels and kids favorites. “I told them, keep in mind that you might not see it again,” said Janey, a stayathome mom.Since then, the collection keeps replenishing (补充) itself, thanks to
