years logging 伐木 the growth of cities have disturbed more than half of the cats main habitat forcing them into living in small groups in different places Conservationists 保护主义者 used to focus on protecting these habitats But biologists realize now that young jaguars move from one place to another in their hunt for mates and new land They may trek 长途跋涉 up to 500 miles through the edges of civilization It is a dangerous journey that takes them far from the shelter of the jungle Scientist Alan Rabinowitz is president of an organization devoted to saving wild cats One day while studying a map of all the known areas jaguars live in Rabinowitz decided to play a game of connecting the dots 圆点 He drew a line between one area and another area Suddenly he was struck by an idea that could help save this threatened species Rabinowitz realized that protecting the pathways was just as important as protecting the habitats themselves He began an international project called Path of the Jaguar to check these pathways and make sure they won t become dead ends A jaguar unlike a human is not stopped by many things Rabinowitz says It s not stopped by a river or even a mountain covered in snow But things such as factories highways and dams will halt a jaguar in its tracks forcing it off course Rabinowitz s project works to persuade countries to limit industrial development that would block jaguars pathways These protected areas are not always connected But these cats are smart they run across open land in the dark If they find a jungle with something to eat they ll stop to rest just as you might pull over at a restaurant during a family road trip 21 Alan Rabinowitz studied a map one day it wagging to the right The direction of tail wagging does in fact matter said Giorgio Vallortigara a professor at the University of Trento in Italy Professor Vallortigara finds that the way the tail is wagging can tell you a lot about a dog s state of mind whether you re a human or another dog What s the difference between a left wag and a right wag Professor Vallortigara and his colleagues have studied 43 dogs of various breeds German Shepherds Beagles Boxers Border Collies and some mutts They find that if a dog wags its tail to the left It s feeling anxious or nervous The reason could be an unfamiliar or dangerous situation an unfamiliar person or an unfamiliar and possibly threatening dog But if the tail is wagging to the right it means the dog is feeling relaxed and approachable The tail is a very important signal said Thomas Reimchen a biologist at the University of Victoria in British Columbia Canada There is a lot of visual information that dogs use when communicating with each other How did the scientists figure all this information out They had the dogs in their study watch videotapes of other dogs When the dog on the tape wagged its tail to the right they say the other dogs remained calm and cool But when the dog on the tape wagged its tail to the left the other dogs got anxious The researchers are still not exactly sure if the direction of tail wagging is something the dog does consciously They suspect that it might be something the dog does without even thinking about it kind of like when you get goose bumps if something scares or startles you They plan to do more research to get more information about what dogs are thinking and feeling while they re wagging As Reimchen said I m not going to be surprised if we find all sorts of really interesting processes that nobody has ever seen before 解题导语 本文通过实验说明了狗摇尾巴的方式和狗的心理状态的关系 24 Professor Vallortigara s study focused on the relationship between A a dog s state of mind and its owner s
