For each question there are four choices marked A. B. C. and D. Choose the best answer to each of the questions. Passage OneIn the course of my reading I had come across a case where, many years ago, some hunters on our Great Plains organized a buffalo hunt for the entertainment of an English earl and to provide some fresh meat for his use. They had charming sport. They killed seventy-two of those great animals; and ate part of one of them and left the seventy-one to rot. In order to determine the difference between an anaconda(蟒蛇)and an earl, I had seven lambs turned into the anacondas cage. The grateful snake immediately crushed one of them and swallowed it, then lay back satisfied. It showed no further interest in the lamb, and no inclination to harm them. I tried this experiment with other anacondas is that the earl is cruel and the anaconda isnt; and the earl wantonly (肆无忌惮地) destroyed what he has no use for, but the anaconda doesnt. This seemed to suggest that the anaconda was not descended from the earl. It also seemed to suggest that the earl was descended from the anaconda and had lost a good deal in the transition.I was aware that many men who have accumulated more money that they can ever use have shown a hunger for more, and have not hesitated to cheat the ignorant and the helpless out of their poor servings in order to partially satisfy the appetite. I furnished a hundred different kinds of wild and domestic animals the opportunity to accumulate vast stores of food but none of them would do it. The squirrels and bees and certain birds made accumulations, but stopped when they gathered a winters supply, and could not be persuaded to add to it either honestly or by trickery. These experiments convinced me that there is this difference between man and the higher animals: he is greedy, they are not.In the course of my experiments, I convinced myself that among the animals man is the only one that harbors insults and injuries, broods over (默默沉思) them, waits till a chance offers, then takes revenge. The passion of revenge is unknown to the higher animals.31. By describing the buffalo hunting and his experiment with the anaconda, the author mainly wants to tell his readers that _.A. the anaconda is easily satisfied B. the earls ancestor turned out to be the anacondaC. the earl is capable of committing wanton crueltyD. the anaconda does not harm other animals except when it is hungry32. According to the author, in human society, the rich _.A. are inclined to gather more riches B. tend to accumulate vast stores of foodC. are mostly cheaters D. are ready to help the poor33. The authors experiments with different kinds of animals seem to prove that _.A. man is the highest animal B. man is superior to animalsC. man is inferior to animals in certain respects D. man is the lowest animal34. We learn from the last paragraph that _.A. love of revenge is a unique characteristic of manB. man is the only animal capable of thinkingC. human beings are capable of insulting and injuring each otherD. man is better at taking chances than animals35. In this passage, the author writes a(n) _.A. serious tone B. ironic toneC. angry tone D. matter-of fact tonePassage TwoUnder normal conditions, the act of communication requires the presence of at least two persons: one who sends and one who receives the communication. In order to communicate thoughts and feelings, there must be a conventional system of signs or symbols which mean the same to the sender and the receiver. The means of sending communications are too numerous and varied for systematic classification; therefore, the analysis must begin with the means of receiving communication. Reception of communication is achieved by our senses. Sight, hearing, and touch play the most important roles. Smell and taste play very limited roles, for they cannot receive intellectual expression from fully developed systems of signs and symbols.Examples of visual communication are gesture and mimicry (模仿). Although both frequently accompany speech, there are systems that rely solely on sight, such as those used by deaf and dumb persons. Another means of communication visually is by signals of fire, smoke, flags or flashing lights. Feelings may be simply communicated by touch, such as by handshaking or backslapping, although a highly developed system of hand stroking (击掌) has enabled blind, deaf, and dumb persons to communicate intelligently. Whistling someone, applauding in a theater, and other forms of communication by sound rely upon the ear as a receiver. The most fully developed form of auditory communication is, of course, the spoken language. The means of communication mentioned so far have two features in common: they last only a short time and the persons involved must be relatively close to each other. Therefore, all are restricted in time and space.36. The author explains that he will deal with reception of communication first because _.A. communication actually takes place when the message is received B. there are more means of receiving than of sending communication C. reception of communications involves use of the senses D. it is difficult to organize by typing the means of sending communications37. Persons who cannot see, hear or speak are able to communicate through a system of _.A. gesturing B. handshaking C. backslapping D. hand stroking 38. A form of visual communication often used with a type of auditory communication is _.A. gesturing B. handshaking C. backslapping D. hand stroking 39. The author specifically mentions that speech is _.A. often used when communicating by touchB. necessary for satisfactory communication by gestureC. the only highly developed system of communicationD. the most developed form of communication based on hearing 40. Which of the following statements about communication by touch is TRUE? _.A. Touch is less important than taste as a means of communication.B. For each blank there are four choices marked A, B, C, D. You should choose the one that best fits into the passage. The fact that America still attracts millions of people is evidence that it is not in decline. People arent attracted to a place of decline. Signs of decline are sure to be found in a place as _56_ as America: debt, crime, the homeless, drugs, dropouts. But the main _57_ of America, the first and most enduring impression, is dynamism, energy, aggressiveness, forward movement. It is so hard to think of this nation in decline when you know that there are vast regions of the planet which are absolutely _58_, incapable of any improvement at all. It is difficult for me to agree with Paul Kennedys thesis in The Rise and Fall of Great Powers that America must _59_ follow historical precedent. Thats the way history used to be- all powerful nations declined and gave way to other empires. But maybe there is another way to look at what is happening. I have a sense that what is going on here concerns much more than the _60_ of a nation.America is becoming more _61_ every day because of the unbelievable facility of the new Third World immigrants to put a piece of their _62_ culture inside of American culture. The _63_ of a “dominant” American culture is changing every moment. It is incredible coming to America to find you are somewhere else- in Seoul, in Taipei, in Mexico City. You can travel inside this Korean culture right on the streets of Los Angeles. Inhabitants of this vast city become _64_ tourists in the place of their own residence. In Los Angeles, traditional Third World cultures are, for the first time, _65_ the most modern mentalities and technologies.56.
