I felt completely alone in my small town. But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone. Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me. After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day. Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Learn to care more about others feelings.DThe fact that your hair turns grey because of stress is nothing more than an old wives tale. Its true that stress isnt good for you, but its not going to turn you into a silver fox just yet. In fact, the answer comes from the cells in your hair. These are what determine the color and, eventually, the fade to grey. Most of us start to notice our first grey hairs by the time we hit our thirties. A general rule to go by is that by the age of 50, half of the population will have lost the color in 50 percent of their hair. But why does it happen? Firstly, we need to understand how hair gets its color. Your hair is made up of cells called melanocytes (黑色素细胞) which produce pigments (色素) as they grow into the hair fiber. There are two different types of melanins (黑色素): eumelanins (真黑色素) and pheomelanins (类黑色素). The former produces black and brown pigments, while the latter produces red and yellow pigments. The exact amount of these pigments determines whether a person has black, brown, blonde or red hair. As we age, the ability of the melanocytes to produce more pigments weakens. Thats because our hair grows in different phases. The growing phase lasts between three and five years, after which our follicles (毛囊) turn off for about three months to rest and get ready to grow more hairs. This goes round and round and, after a time, our bodies arent as good at producing new hairs. Scientists are continuing to try and find ways to prevent greying hair. A team of scientists in France is working to try and stop the melanocytes from being damaged at the end of each hair cycle. They are trying to use a special enzyme (酶) to protect the cells from damage. If successful, it could lead the way for new products that keep our locks full of color for years to come.13. What does the phrase “an old wives tale” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. an incorrect belief B. useless talk C. a scientific rule D. helpful experience14. What do we know about red hair? A. It doesnt turn grey as people get older. B. It contains more pheomelanins than melanins. C. The amount of pigments in it doesnt change over time. D. People with red hair have weaker ability to produce pigments.15. What can we infer from the article? A. Grey hair has nothing to do with stress. B. Grey hair is a symbol of declining health. C. It takes three months for new hair to grow. D. The growth and color change of hair depend on cells.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The benefits of keeping a journalIf you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem simple, but it can make a big difference in your life. I have been keeping journals for years. Writing all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has become a habit for me. 16 Here are some benefits you will get by keeping a journal. It prevents you from losing an idea. Have you ever gotten an idea only to lose it later because you didnt write it down? 17 But then I developed the habit of writing down every idea that came into my mind as soon as possible. If Im away from my computer, I usually write it down on a piece of paper that I bring wherever I go. I will then transfer the idea to the journal in my computer. It helps you review all the lessons youve learned. By reviewing your journal, you can quickly see the lessons youve learned and the ideas youve gotten. 18 You can use the ideas to propel (鞭策) yourself forward. 19 After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far youve gone. Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw ideas you had in the past might have been realized today. It helps you expand your ideas. It trains you to express your thoughts.C. It allows you to see your progress over time.D. Just use whatever tool you feel comfortable with.E.
