I know what my students needNow I have been a teacher for five years.I know what my students need clearly.Maybe they want to have a lot,but there is the most need of the success for them.Success is very helpful for students to learn English. So I often give them the opportunity to make them successful.Students prefer to express themselves, so I like to give students opportunities for self-expression. For example, in a consolidation phase,I always allow students to take turns reading, as a teacher. All the students are fond of beig a teacher, even some are not good in English.Bacause they can lead others to read and feel the joy of success. On the other hand,I often ask students to perform in front of the classroom. When I review the dialogues in the textbook,I will ask some to act out.At this time, Many students raise their hands and hope me give them a chance. They can play the dialogues very well like”At a snack bar”,”and so on.On the whole, students enjoy these activities. More importantly, they can gain a sense of accomplishment. But if they fail in the activities, theyll be very sad and expressed. So I always choose suitable activities for them.I think its a good way to make them successful by activities.I hope every teacher can do it. Of course, the students will be happy to have a sence of the success. I think its my students need most.ThefirstEnglishclassItaughtNow I remember the first English class I taught clearly. Would you like to share it with me? OK! Let me tell you!The students I taught were in Grade 3. Most of them didnt learn English at school before. On the way to the classroom, I full of confidence. With what I prepared for the class, I smiled and thought, I must make the students love me, love English class and love English!” When I came in the classroom, first I kept smiling and said “hello” to the students happily. They were very smart. They smiled ,waved their hands at me and said “hello” happily to me. I was very happy. I put my thumbs up and said, “Youre so great !” They were very happy too. Then I introduced myself to them. Immediately they could introduce themselves. How excellent they are! Do you think so? Yes? Thank you very much! Later, I asked the students to say some English they knew. To my surprise, they said a lot , such as UFO, NBA, CCTV and cool. I praised them at once, “*! You know so much English! Who can tell me why we should learn English?” The students listed many reasons, for example, learning English well, we can talk with foreigners, we can read English novels, we can watch English cartoons, we can get a high score in the test and we can learn more knowledge from foreign countries. At the end of the class, I asked them, “ Do you Love me? Do you like learning English?” They happily answered me together, “Yes!”I think in my first class, Im successful that I make my students happy and confident. They knew that English is useful, English is fun, English is easy to learn!Ill never forget the first English class I taught. Will you remember it?How to use body language in the classroom? Personally in my opinion, body language is very useful in the classroom. It can save my time to organize the classroom discipline. It can help the students to understand and remember what they learn easily . It can make the class active. But how to use body language in the classroom? Now Id like to show you some examples. First, body language can save my time to organize the classroom discipline. When we practice dialogues in pairs or groups freely. I ask them to stop when finish. But some students dont stop, just talk and talk. At this time, I never shout “stop”or knock the blackboard loudly. I do like this, I stand in front of the classroom and keep a smile in my face. I calmly said, Who can do the dialogue? The students can remind each other to stop. If someone put his head on the desk , Ill smile to him , straighten up and put my hand back . Hell be shy ,smile and does like me. And we can continue our lesson at once. Socond, body language can help the students to understand and remember what they learn easily .I always use body language in the class, especially when we learn new language. For the pupils, they are lack of language experience ,language atmosphere and communicate space. For some language knowledge, it is hard to explain to the students in English. So I like to use the correct and simple body language, it will help the students understand well. For example, when I taught “Open your book.” I take up a book and open it, at the same time, I say “Open your book.” then all students understood the meaning at once.Last, body language can make the class active . When I “Look at me. This is my head.” Its easy to learn, but its also boring. How to make the knowledge interesting ? How to make the class interesting? I add some body language when speaking . Look at me, this is my ear. Look at me, this is my eye. The students a re very happy and the class is very active. As you see, body language is very useful. How to use it well? Ill keep trying. Id like to learn from you. Would you like to share it with me?HowToMakeClassActiveAndInteractiveMy students all like my class very much. They think my class is very interesting. They feel happy. I like my class, too. Because I make my class active and interactive. But how to do that? Personally in my opinion , I must be knowledgeable, I must know more than the textbook, I must be meticulous in design. The most important is that I must take the correct method at the right time. For example, when I taught fruits, first I learned more fruits words than the ones in the book and prepared some teaching methods. In the class, according to the situation, I designed to use a guessing game. I described one fruit, then the students guessed. For example, the riddle is “Its round, its sour or sweet , its juicy, its red or green or purple or pink or yellow.” The answer is grape. But as we know, the students like to say the answer before we say start. When I said its round. They guessed immediately. Some students shouted “apple”! Some students shouted “ watermelon”! Some students shouted “ plum”! And so on. I was surprised . *! So many answers! But I was very happy , because I believed that its a good practice method. Its better than what I designed. So I used this method at once. I smiled to them and said, “ Which one is right? Please continue to listen to me ,OK?” They said “OK” together cheerfully, then listened to me quietly. I continue to say“Its sour or sweet.”This time, they didnt say “watermelon”. Then we continue to guess. Their answers became less and less. At last they said the right answer “grape”. We felt the guessing game was very interesting and helpful. Its beneficial to arouse the students imagination. Its beneficial to improve the students thinking ability.I love my job, I love my students. So I always try my best to make my class active and interactive. I think Its my duty. Do you think so? TheStudentsandGroupLearningNow, group learning is very popular. I like it very much. I often ask my students to learn in groups, because they can benefit from group learning. Such as, they can express themselves freely , they can help each other, they can improve their ability of communication. For my students , its the most important that they can get more chances to speak . In my class, therere about one hundred students. Therere few chances for each one to express oneself. We have to often read row by row , line by line or group by group. I think its not good for the development of the individual. So I often be meticulous in design and let they learn in groups. Every student can speak more in the same time. For example, when we learn “Whats Your Favorite Sport?” After basic practice, I ask them to make a survey in groups. First, I divided them into four groups according to their abilities. In each group, therere some excellent students , and therere some students who need help, too. Second, I request clearly. They should interview their group members three question, Whats your favorite sport? Whos your favorite player? Why? And record them . Later, Ill ask any one to do a report according to the survey. If he does a good job, hell get a star for their group. So they must help each other in groups.Third, when they make the survey, I join each group for a while, Ill give my hands to them if necessary. At that time, Im not only their teacher, but also their good friends. We all feel relaxing. They ask me freely and I also try my best to help them. The most important, the excellent students also try their best to help their group members. At last, most students do the reports successfully. For example, Toms favourite sport is badminton. His favourite player is Lin Dan. Because hes handsome, cool and works hard. In my class, I love group learning. Because we benefit from it. Ill try my best to design and organize the group learning. Im sure I can do it well.WhenastudentfailsintalkingI think its very common that a student fails in talking. English is a foreign language. Our students are only beginners. Every one may have troubles in talking. Its not serious problem. The most important is what can we do when they fail in talking. When a student fails in talking, personally in my opinion, first, we wont be angry, we must remain calm, even smile. Second, we must know the reason at once. Third, we must think about how to help him or her immediately. I think they are helpful to the students, to me and to the class.Once, we were practicing a dialogue. Several pairs had done it well. When I asked two students to do it , but one failed in talking. I was surprised, because she is a not bad girl. I thought she could do it well, although she didnt raised her hand. Why? Her face became red and she was so shy. I realized that she was nervous because she joined the class just a week ago. What should I do? I smiled to her and said,Dont be nervous, I believe you can do it well. Just have a try. But she still kept in silence. I had to let her sit down, but I said to her with a smile on my face, “Listen carefully and later try it again, OK?” She smiled ,too. After another two dialogues , she raised her hand confidently. Did she do a good job? Of course! Since then, shes never nevus in class and seldom fails in talking. I think , as a student, shes successful. As a teacher, Im successful , too.Yes?I often say to my students, “In my class, just try your best to express yourselves ,just to speak English loudly , right or false is not the most important, courage and confidence is the most important! Believe youll do better and better!” I think my words can help my students keep confident when they fail in talking. Do you think so? HowtoletstudentsthinkwhiledoingMany people consider that learning English by rote. But I think we should let students think while doing . So that they can learn English well. But how to do? I have been making efforts to explore effective ways . I concluded from the practice that teaching method design is the most important. It can let the students think while doing. Now Id like to share one example with you! When we learned “Whats your favorite sport? My favorite sport is”, after they did the dialogue well, for consolidation and extension, I designed a practice activity. I asked four students to come to the front of the classroom. First ,I asked two students make the dialogue of the class. “Whats your favorite sport? My favorite sport is basketball.” Then I asked the other two students to make a dialogue according to the first dialogue like this, “Whats his favorite sport? His favorite sport is basketball.” The students liked the practice very much. They all wanted to have a try. So we practiced like that for a while. When they felt a little boring, I increased the difficulty of the practice. I asked them to do a dialogue like this , “ Whats your favorite sport? My favorite sport is badminton. Whos your favorite player? My favorite player is Lin Dan.” Then other students made dialogue according to the new dialogue, “Whats her favorite sport? Her favorite sport is badminton. Whos her favorite player? Her favorite player is Lin Dan.” They interested in the practice again. At last, I increased the difficulty of the practice again. Two students did the dialogue like this,“ Whats your favorite sport? My favorite sport is diving. Whos your favorite player? My favorite player is Guo Jingjing. Why? Because shes beautiful, lovely and works hard.” Then other students made dialogue according to the new dialogue, “Whats her favorite sport? Her favorite sport is swimming. Whos her favorite player? Her favorite player is Guo Jingjing. Why? Because Guo Jingjing is beautiful, lovely and works hard.” Im very happy that their passion lasted to the end of the class. My students like the practice so much. I think because they like thinking while doing. So they felt the activity was interesting. We must be meticulous in design. Ill try my best to do a good job. Just believe me!IUseTheTextbookThisWayThe great educationist Tao Xingzhi said, “The textbook is only one example.” I agree with him very much. So I use the textbook this way. First I study the English Course Standard carefully. I make it clear that the aims of the textbook. Second, I read the textbook from the beginning to the end. I list the focus on my notebook. I think I must help my students grasp them well. Third, I collect the relative teaching material. So that I can use the textbook creatively. For example, when we learned PEP Primary English Book 7 , Unit 3 Last Weekend and Unit 4 My Holiday, theyre about the grammar The Simple Past Tense. How to teach the grammar well? I remembered what Ben said, “Grammar is learned through language , not language is learned by grammar.” So I designed an essay about my holiday according to the contents of Unit 3 and Unit 4, including Where I went, How I went and what I did. First, we read the essay together and found out the verbs. I asked the students to pay more attention to the difference of the verbs. Then I asked them to raise some questions according to the essay. They were so smart that they raised many questions, such as “Where did you go on your holiday? How did you go there? What did you do? Did you have a good holiday?” Then I asked them to ask and answer according to the easy. When they practice pretty well, I said, “Dear students, this is my holiday. Do you want to know your classmatesholiday? If you want to know, please interview them now.” They were very happy and made a survey by themselves. I helped them when necessary. During that time, I taught them many Past Tense verbs. At last, I asked them to write a composition about their holiday. From this class, I think we learned the main contents of the two units. I consider the two units of the textbook , such as Lets learn and Lets talk and Lets read to be our listening and reading materials. I use the textbook this way, because I think we should learn English from life and we should use English in the life. We should do things by what we learn.Do you agree with me? IknowhowtomakethemsuccessfulThere are many definitions of succeed. Personally in my opinion, if my students like learning English and like taking part in the class actively , theyre successful. Now , Im glad to say that I know how to make them successful. Thats I must be meticulous in teaching design. Now Id like to share one example with you! When we learned “Whats your favorite sport? Because Im glad to try my best to prepare the lessons , not only knowledges, but also methods. The most important is that I can change the teaching designs according to the situations. Now Id like to share one of my teaching stories with you. When I taught fruits, first I learned more fruits words
