In this Unit, section A mainly talks about Chinese Traditional Festivals and section B is about Foreign Festivals, such as Halloween and Christmas. Teaching Aims1. Understand the passage with the help of reading strategies, find out the deep meaning of the story, and retell the story.2. Improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills especially reading skill. Emphasis and Difficulties1 Know something about Christmas. 2 Find out the deep meaning of the passage. 3 Using the reading strategies to infer the deep meaning. Teaching Procedures Activities Purpose Pre-reading(8 min)Start the lesson by asking the students what they know about Christmas. Give the students some blank paper and color pens, they will work in groups and draw some symbolic objects of Christmas. During drawing, they can discuss what they know about Christmas. Inspire students former knowledge and imagination about Christmas, which can draw their attention to the theme of the reading material, and get them ready for the following reading. Fill in the mind-map. This task is for the first part of the mind-map. After finishing it, introduce the story that I know about Christmas that is “A Christmas Carol”. Excite students desire to know more about the Christmas story While-reading(20) Use a video to let the students know the meaning of the story. Before watching, introduce the next part of the mind-map, the names that will be mentioned in the story. And students need to fill the 3 blanks with the question what Scrooge see when hes with.? Get students to watch and listen to the story instead of reading them. It can draw their attention and reduce their reading stress Read between the lines. Students need to infer or make guesses. Ask the students to read the second, third and fourth paragraph carefully with the 6 questions of 2d. And try to find the right answers. Help students get a further understanding of the story Get the students to read the whole passage and find the answer to the question: What is the spirit of Christmas? Students are expected to grasp the theme of the passage Post-reading(12) Encourage the students to retell the text with the help of mind-map and the pictures. Help the students use English in reality. Retelling can help students improve their ability to express in English. It is a good and practical way to understand the story and improve oral English Summary Let the students know the true spirit of life.
