本文通过分析主人公的奋斗史、他对爱的理解和成功后面对现实的矛盾心理,认为马丁的生命历程是一次走向真和美的朝圣之旅。 (1909),The Callof theWild (1903),The SeaWolf (1904),The Game (1905),White Fang (1906),The Road (1907),and soon.London had bee the best-selling,highest-paid andmost popularAmerican authorof his time.He onceencouraged otheraspiring writersto“develop aphilosophy life, put astamp ofself onyour work, have something to say,use yourtime wisely, learn how to read, howto absorb anddiscard”(Walker11).In1916,London was so spirituallybarren that he mittedsuicide withmorphine. His tragicdeath canbe helpfulfor readersto understand his worksbecause“study of his lifeand writingsprovides acase throughwhich toexamine thecontradictions in theAmericancharacter, along withkey movementsand ideasduring theProgressive era”(Tian4).Martin Edenis asemi-autobiographical novelbecause“the struggleprocess of theprotagonistMartin Edenis the true portrayalof JackLondons earlylife”(Si415).Martin wasbornin apoorfamily, living a very hardlife.By chance,he was invited to a richfamily andfell in love with the beautifulladyRuth Morse,so helonged forthe life of the upper classwhich he thought was noble and elegant. He was ambitious, persistent andpassionate.London onceused thispoem toshow Martin Edens life:Let melive outmy yearsin heatof blood!Let medie drunkenwith thedreamers wine!Let menot seethis soul-house builtof mudGo topplingto thedusta vacantshrine!(Neihardt41)Martin Eden made great efforts tochange hisstate ofliving.Through self-education andself-determination,he sueeded. Then fame and moneyoverwhelmed him,the bourgeoisieopened thedoor for him and the wealthylady threwherself into his armsas well.At thistime,Martin shouldhave beenglad;however,he woefullyfound that the upper class wasso hypocritical, and that the love was notwhat he had originallysought.Besides,“he alsosuffered fromclass alienation, for heno longerbelonged to the working class, while herejected thematerialistic valuesof thewealthy which he workedso hardto join”(VanSpanckeren150).What he had gotdidnt leadto happiness, but tragedy.Due to his disappointmentto societyand love,Martin felt very lonelyand at last he chose suicide, which haddifferent meaningsfor this novel. For manyreaders theprotagonists deathwassounexpected that they“have feltthat suicidewas notby anymeans thelogical conclusionof astory dealingwith theheros suess山东经济学院学士学位论文against odds”(Watson45).注意文内引文规范,每部都须在文末参考书目中找到Earle Laborquoted areaders impressionon Martin Eden:“during lasttwo nights,I was totally engrossedin Martin Eden, and itdeeply touchedme. No otherbooks haveever exertedsuch aninfluence onme.Up tonow Istill cannot understand whyI wasso attractedby it” (357).We canalso seethe answerin thefollowing sentence:Ignoring itstragic ending, the bookis oftenregarded as asuessstory, which inspirednot only a wholegeneration ofyoung writersbut otherdifferent fieldswho, without aidor encouragement, attained theirobjectives throughgreat struggle.(John London23)By describingMartin Edens love, struggle anddeath, the noveldeeply exposedthe moneyworship, vulgar hypocrisyof theAmericansocietyattheturn of the nieenthand twentiethcenturies. It alsorevealed thedestruction of the cultureand thetalents bythe bourgeoisie and thecorrupt practiceof theAmerican publishingindustry. This thesis arguesthatMartin Edens lifeisapilgrimage totruth and beauty throughanalyzing his struggle history, his prehensionof true love and hisconflictingpsychology after suess. In additionto Introductionand Conclusion, this thesisconsists ofthree parts. The firstchapter discussesMartins pursuitof truth and beauty from his struggle motivationand strugglecourse. The secondchapter focuseson Martins prehensionof true love in two different periods of his life. The thirdchapter analyzeshis puzzlementof writing and difficultpositioning ofsocial classaftersuess.山东经济学院学士学位论文3Chapter OneMartin Edens StruggleHistory There isnodoubt thatMartin Edenrecords a personal strugglehistory.Martin Edenworks veryhard fromrags toriches, from anunknown sailorto acelebrated writer. How canhe makethis? This chaptermainly analyzeswhy hewants tosueed andhow hestrives to make his dream etrue.I.Struggle Motivationto WinLove andStatus Generallyspeaking,it is to win Ruth Morses love and to beeamember ofthe upper-class societythat makesMartin Edenstrive for suess. When he was apoor sailor,he hadthe chanceto visita typicalbourgeoisie familybecause hegave ahand toArthur Morse,a sonof avery wealthyupperclass. While visitinghe wasshocked bythe splendidand granddecorations ofthe Morses, and he was ata losswhat todo. When Arthurcalled him“Mr.Martin,”he wasthrilling justlike he had heardthe most beautiful melodyin the world. In hismemory, nobody calledhim“Mr.Martin”;therefore,he thoughtthe bourgeoisiestands forcivilization andelegance, with whichhis seamanlife couldnt pare. The greatdecorations andpaintings arousedMartins pursuitof beauty. He admiredthis kindof lifevery muchand wanted to enterinto theirsociety. The otherpurpose of his struggleisto pursue truelove, which is the moreimportant reasonfor Martinsstruggle.Martin lovedRuth atfirst sight.“She was a pale, ethereal creature, with wide, spiritual blueeyes and a wealthof goldenhair”(4;ch.1).He consideredher tobe aspirit,a divinity, and agoddess. In Martins eyes, she was thebestwomen he had everseen before.“He likenedher toa palegold flowerupon aslender stem”(4;ch.1).Not onlyher beautiful look but also herdecent mannerand eruditetalking profoundlyattracted Martin. In hisview, she knewso muchthat he couldnt match her, even someknowledge he knew nothingat all.In hisinner heart,he wanted to knowwhat she had known, and expectedto attracther attention. He fell in love with her,so hedecided to fight forpursuing thetrue and pure love.He forgothimself andstared ather withhungry eyes. Here wassomethingto live for,to winto, tofightfor anddie for.On his way home,“her faceshimmered beforehis eyesas hewalked alongpale andserious, sweet andsensitive, smiling withpity andtenderness asonlyaspirit couldsmile, andpureas he had neverdreamed puritycould be”(22;ch.3).Martin eagerlywantedtograsp her;however, heknewthat thegap between them wasreally large. He wasever notfit tocarry waterfor her.He realizedthat onlyhe changedhis status, could hematchher. Therefore,he mustdo something, which madehim determined to strivefor suess. At thetable inMorses family,Martin discoveredanother kindof life, full of love betweenbrothers andsisters, between parentsand children.“How theyloved eachother, the membersof this family! There flashedinto his mind thepicture ofher mother, ofthekiss ofgreeting, and ofthe pairof themwalking towardhim witharms entwined”(12;ch.2).In Martins world, this kindof affectionbetween parentsand childrendidnt exist. He deeplyappreciated itand itreminded himthat healso neededit.Only hewent into the upper-class society, was heable toenjoy thelove.山东经济学院学士学位论文4Originally,in hisinner heart,Martin Edenlonged fortruth and beauty. And,everything Martin had seen in thehouse ofMorse wokehim up.On the one hand,he wantedto winRuths love.On theother hand,he desiredeagerly tothe freshandelegantlife style. These werethe reasonsfor Martin Eden makinghis decisionto striveforsuessand enterinto the world ofthe upperclass. Then thepilgrimage oftruelove and beautybegan.II.Struggle Courseto PraiseTruthandBeauty Theexperience inMorsesfamilystimulated Martins pursuitfor love and lifeofthe bourgeoisie. He knewthat he was nothingbutapoor seaman and thatonly throughhard workcould hemake hisdream etrue. Then Martin Edenmadegreateffortsthat nobodycould imagine. With thelove in mind,he justbecame sostrong thatnothing coulddefeat him.In theprocess ofstruggle,Martin suffereda lotand atlast,he sueededtobeeaverypopular writer. In order to livelike theupper-class people,Martin madea planto reformhimself inall aspects, such as the way of dressing, speaking, eating andsome otherdaily habits. He gaveup thehabit ofnot brushingteeth, and woreclothes withstiff collars, although atthe beginninghe feltunfortable.Besides hedeveloped a good habitof havinga coldbath everyday. In the wayofspeaking, the firstthing Martin Eden didwasto go tothe freelibrary andread thebooks oiquettes. And hewarned himself to quitcursing. At thebeginning,he reada fewbooks buthe feltdifficult tounderstand because he hadextremely littleeducation. But his desire tobooks didnt decrease. And thenMartin hadno choicebut tolearn from the basicknowledge. With thehelp ofRuth,he began to studythe grammarand madegreat progress. In thenext fewweeks,he reada largenumber ofbooks rangingfrom poetryto philosophy. He wasennobled bythe loftinessof thoughtand beautyhe foundin thebooks. This ledhim tobelieve morefirmly thanever thatup abovehim,in societylike Ruthand herfamily, all menand womenthought thesethoughts andlived them.(54;ch.8)Compared with the painfuland dirtylife helived,Martin realizedatlastthat beauty, intelligence and love werewhat hereally needed. The booksMartin hadread changedhim intoanother person.Because of his ownexperience,he could understand somebooks moreeasily and in some ways,he hadhis ownexclusive opinions. The changescaught Ruths attentionand shockedher. She foundmany meritsfrom him and hadsome differentfeelings towardshim. In orderto tellRuth his lifeofadventure, make aliving easily, and share the beautywith morereaders,Martin had a suddenimpulse to write, and thenhishardwriting careerstarted.Everyday hewent tothe libraryand riskedhis lifeto readand write. He spentmostof histimein reading and writing, sleeping onlyfive hoursor lesseveryday. He lovedtruth and beauty andwantedtoshare themwith others,so hewrote themin his manuscripts, such asAdventure,The Pot,The Wineof Life, andtheSea Lyrics, and mailed them tothe publishing panies, with thehope thatwhat hewrote would be published in thetomorrows magazines and that he wouldearn moremoney thanasaseamanandwouldberich. But what he receivedwas not the contributionfee butthe articleshe hadwritten without any change. At thebeginning,he didnt loseheart andpersisted inwriting withstrong will.He believedthat his writing wasbetter thanthe articlespublishedin the magazinesand that he would sueed sooneror later.山东经济学院学士学位论文5Unfortunately thingsdidnt happenas he had imagined. As dayswent by,he hadno moremoney tobuy stampswith whichto continuehis returnedmanuscripts ontheir travels.Looking atthem,he felt disappointed and had tomeet the reality todo somephysical work. Then hewent toJoes washingshop towash clotheswhere Martinlived ahell-like life.It wassuch atiring jobthat he could hardlyhave timeto rest, let alonereadingand writing.Martin loathedhimself, and loathedlife. The spurof ambitionwas blunted;he hadno vitalitywith whichto feelthe prodof it.He wasdead. His soulseemed dead.He was a beast,a workingbeast. He wasoppressed by a sense of failure.(121;ch.17)Eight weekslater,he earnedsome money and leftthe washinghouse.Martin spenta pleasantholiday with Ruth, and theirlove rosetoahigher state. He determinedto writeagain. He discoveredthat heloved beautymore thanfame, and thatwhat desirehehadfor famewas largelyfor Ruths sake.It wasfor thisreason thathisdesirefor famewas strong. He wantedtobeegreat in theworlds eyes;to makegood,as heexpressed it,in orderthat thewomen heloved shouldbe proudof him and deemhim worthy.(150;ch.23)To win thetruelove and beauty,Martin regainedfaith andlived aparatively happyspiritual life.In thecondition ofeating nothingfor40hours,suffering thepain ofhunger,Martin wenton readingandwriting, because his love forRuth encouragedhim alot. However, none of his manuscriptsexcept TheRing ofBells for5dollars was aepted bythe editor, and hewasindebt. The publication of thisbook gavea seriousblow toMartin.“Five dollarsfor fivethousand words, ten wordsfor acent, the marketprice for art.The disappointmentof it,the lieof it,the infamyof it,were uppermostin histhoughts”(168;ch.25).He feltthe effortshehadmade wereall invain. And hedeterminedtogive upwritingandto finda jobjust asRuth hadsuggested him.Due toMartins failuretomakesome achievements, the Morsesobjected thatRuth shouldmarry him.Under thepersuasion ofher parents,Ruth didnt persistin theirloveandleft Martin.Martinsstrugglemotivation disappeared.Everyday his life remaineddown, empty andidle. However themiracle happenedto him.One ofhis bookswasaepted byamagazine, and hesueeded overone night. He becamewell-known,and thenthe restofhismanuscripts werepublished dayby day.He earneda largeamount of money andsuessfully enteredintotheupper-class society. The strugglecourse ofMartin Edenis beyonddescription, from whichwe cansee hisstrongwillof bearingphysical andmental pain, andhispersistence toseek knowledgeandlove.“Martin Edenwasasuperman, who alwayshad highmoral beforepain anddifficulties, reflecting theunyielding spirit”(Xiao60).In orderto pursuetrueloveandbeauty,he isbrave enoughto overeall thedifficulties to realize hisdream. In thefollowing chapter, the thesiswill dealwith Martins prehensionoftruelove.山东经济学院学士学位论文6Chapter TwoMartin Edens ComprehensionofLoveLove playsthe mostimportant rolein Martin Edens life.It is love thathas changedhim fromapoor seaman toa famous writer. All hislife, hewaspursuing trueloveandbeauty, and haddifferent viewsin differentperiods. This chaptermainly analyzesMartins prehensionof love intwodifferentperiodsofhislife.I.In theProcess ofStruggleWorship ofLove Atfirst sight,Martin EdenfellinlovewithRuth, whom heconsidered wasbeautiful andunusually refined.“He likenedher toa palegold flowerupon aslender stem”(4;ch.1).She wasfresh inhis eyesand differedmuch from the girlshehadseeninhis working class. He madea parisonbetweenthem. Those boldblack eyeshad nothingto offer. He knewthe thoughtsbehind himof ice-cream andof somethingelse. But thosesaints eyesalongsidethey offeredall heknew andmore thanhe couldguess. They offeredbooks andpaintings, beauty andrepose, and all the fineelegance ofhigher existence.(42;ch.7)By parison, hethoughtRuth was the onehe wanted. He lovedRuth madly, for herbeautifullook, for herdecent manner, and for her eruditetalking. In Martins eyes, she lookedlike aspirit,a divinity, and agoddess. At thistime,Martin considered love waspure, sane, beautiful, and noother thingsin theworld couldpare withit. In orderto winRuths love,he mustbe mentally equal with her.He thoughthe shouldspeak thesame languagewithher, with thesame grammarand thathe couldunderstand whatshe talkedabout. The mentalequality inlove stimulatedhim tobegin tochange himself.Love wasthe greatestthing in theworld, for whichMartin coulddo anything. As timewent by,Martin reada largenumber ofbooks, for instance, mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature worksand philosophyof Nietzsche. His spirituallife improvedgreatly.Through along timeof hardworking,he couldpare withher in someway. He followedher mentalprocesses moreclearly now,and hersoul wasno longerthe sealedwonder ithad been.He wason terms of intellectualequality withher. His love was moreardent thanever, forheloved herfor whatshe was,and evenher physicalfrailty wasan addedcharm inhis eyes.(128;ch.19)With thisinmind,Martin feltcloser toRuth. He alsoheld thatthere wasno barto theirlove, except forclass differences, which hethought could be shakenoff. When hewas passionatelyinlove,he“consideredlovethe finestthing inthe word.It was love thathad workedthe revolutionin him, changing himfrom anuncouth sailortoastudent andan artist;therefore,to him,the finestand greatestofthethree, greater thanlearning andartistry,waslove”(150;ch.23).To sumup,in thisperiod ofhislife,Martin consideredlove wasthe greatestintheworld山东经济学院学士学位论文7andinorderto winRuthslove,he coulddo anything. In addition,he believedthatthemental qualitywasthebasis oflove, with whichhecouldbe togetherwithRuth.II.After Ruths LeaveLove Defeatedby MoneyWith Ruthslove,Martin Edenbecame sucha strongman whosehis energycouldntbeused up.Martin coulddo anythingfor loveand hebelieved hecould sueedasawriter one day. However,as weall know, reality was always socruel.Because Martin could notachieve alittle aomplishmentforalong time,Ruth couldnot waithim asshe oncepromised. Her parentsadvised herto leavehim. In theireyes,Martin hadno placeintheworld, neither positionnor salary. He was just childishlydreaming ofbeing afamouswriter. He was not matureandnevergrew up.Martin Eden,I amafraid, will neverbe amoney-maker.And thisworld isso orderedthat moneyisthenecessary tohappiness, not theswollen fortunes, but eno
