One day in July 1988, his youngest daughter Jennifer remembered getting a phone call from Terry on his way home from work. “He called on his mobile phone, and said, Ill be home in 10 minutes. Coming home for a barbecue,” Jennifer said. But as he passed through an intersection(十字路口) a van ran a red light, smashing into Terrys jeep and throwing him out of his seat belt. He was rushed to nearby Oshawa General hospital.Moments later, police arrived at the Evanshen home with the news. Lorraine, Terrys wife, remembered seeing him in the ICU for the first time after the accident. There was nothing but machines all over him. He wasnt a pretty sight, and at that time their hope and that of the doctors wasnt very good. Terry lay deep in a coma(昏迷). Three weeks later, he came out of his coma. A lifetime of memories had been wiped clean. He didnt even recognize his own wife. He had been all but reduced to the level of a child. At age 44, Terry Evanshen would be starting all over again. Terry had to train himself how to think, how to speak and even relearn something as basic as how to shave. What made it worse was that Terrys brain could not understand the most basic human emotions. But he had the support of his family, marked by small victories and a renewed bond between him and his three daughters liked to teach him how to play football again. “So I was standing there and I said Put your hand out, like he used to,” said Terrys daughter Tara. “Then Tracey threw him the ball and thats when he stood there, and thats when I realized, Oh my god, I think he really doesnt remember how to do this.”But when Terry returned in 1992 from a sixmonth stint at a rehabilitation(康复) center in Washington State, his recovery really began to pick up steam. It has taken years to rebuild his life, but today, more than 20 years since his playing days, Terry is a popular motivational speaker. He tells his inspiring story of perseverance and courage in his presentation. “Never forget were all in this game of life together,” Evanshen said, as he frequently looked at his large stack of cue(线索) cards in his hands. “We will get to the finish line, one day at a time, one moment at a time, but celebrate the journey.” Evanshen says his family has been his most important asset(财产). He stresses that he refuses to be a victim, claiming he is a survivor.56. Why did the accident happen?A. Because Terry didnt fasten his seat belt.B. This passage is mainly written to _A. provide some information about travel bargainsB. compare the prices of accommodation at hotelsC. describe interesting vacations around the globeD. introduce ways of booking hotels in different areasCIzhar Gafni, 50, is an expert in designing automated massproduction lines. He said during a recent demonstration, his latest prototype(雏形) has now proven itself and mass production will begin in a few months.“I was always fascinated by applying unconventional technologies to materials and I did this on several occasions. I worked for four years to cancel out the corrugated(波纹的) cardboards weak structural points. Making a cardboard box is easy and it can be very strong and durable, but to make a bicycle was extremely difficult and I had to find the right way to fold the cardboard in several different directions. It took a year and a half for me to get it right.” Gafni said.Once the shape has been formed and cut, the cardboard is treated with a secret concoction(混合) made of organic materials to give it its waterproof and fireproof qualities. In the final stage, it is coated with lacquer paint for appearance.Once ready for production, the bicycle will include no metal parts, even the brake mechanism and the wheel and pedal(踏板) bearings will be made of recycled materials.Gafni owns several topoftherange bicycles which he said are worth thousands of dollars each, but when his own creation reaches mass production, it should cost no more than about $20 to buy.Nimrod Elmish, Gafnis business partner, said cardboard and other recycled materials could bring a major change in current production norms because grants(拨款) and rebates(折扣) would only be given for local production and there would be no financial benefits by making bicycles in cheap labor markets.“This is a real gamechanger. It changes. the way products are manufactured and shipped. It causes factories to be built everywhere instead of moving production to cheaper labor markets. Everything that we have known in the production world can change,” he said.Elmish said the business model they had created meant that rebates for using “green” materials would entirely cancel out production costs and this could allow for bicycles to be given away for free in poor countries.Producers would get financial rewards from advertisements such as from multinational companies who would pay for their logo to be part of the frame, he explained.Elmish said initial production was set to begin in Israel in months on three bicycle models and a wheelchair and they will be available to purchase within a year.63. It can be inferred from the passage that _A. Nimrod Elmish is a creative and generous personB. Izhar Gafni made bicycles out of common cardboards with strong structureC. the cardboard bicycle is very cheap mainly because of the ads on its frameD. Izhar Gafni succeeded in designing cardboard bicycles after years of trial and error64. Whats the meaning of the underlined word “unconventional” in Paragraph 2?A. Different from usual ways. B. Almost true.C. Able to make good judgment. D. Very modern.65. From what Gafni said in Paragraph 2, we can conclude that _A. he is enthusiastic about making a cardboard bicycleB. lacquer paint makes the cardboard bicycle waterproof and fireproofC. making a cardboard bicycle is quite similar to making a cardboard boxD. the first stage of making a cardboard bicycle is to make a cardboard box66. Where is this passage probably taken from?A. A science textbook. B. A news report. C. A travel guide. D. An essay.DIn 1996, Mikael Hed completed a year of military service in the Finnish(芬兰的) army before attending a French business school. At the same time, Niklas Hed enrolled at Helsinki University majoring in computer science. The two cousins are among the founders of Rovio, the company that developed the global hit game Angry Birds.Early yearsFounded in 2003, when it was called Relude, the companys early years were far from successful.
