湖州师范学院2013届学位英语考试复习题八(仅供2013届抵学位考试参考用)Part One Reading Comprehension (4 0%)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D).You should decide on the best choice Passage One If we were only necessary to decide whether to teach elementary science to everyone on a mass basis or to find the gifted few and take them as far as they can go, our task would be fairly simple. The public school system, however, has no such choice, for the jobs must be carried on at the same time. Because we depend so heavily upon science and technology for our progress, we produce specialists in many fields. Because we live in a democratic nation, whose citizens make the policies for the nation, large number of us must be educated to understand, to support, and when necessary, to judge the work of experts. The public school must educate both producers and users of scientific services. In education, there should be a balance among the branches of knowledge that contribute to effective thinking and wise judgment. Such balance is defeated by too much emphasis on any one field. This question of balance involves not only the relation of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the arts, but also relative emphasis among the natural sciences themselves.Similarly, we must have a balance between current and classical knowledge. The attention of the public is continually drawn to new possibilities in scientific fields and discovery of new knowledge; these should not be allowed to turn our attention away from the sound, established materials that form the basis of courses for beginners.1. If the valve is not the source of the leak, remove the wheel from the bicycle and put the tyre off. Be careful not to pinch the inner tube. Remove the inner tube and pump some air into it. Do not use tyre levers for doing this. Then hold it in a bowl of water until you see bubbles coming from it. Or, hold the tube to your ear and listen for air escaping. Dry the tube. Choose a patch which is big enough to cover the hole and the surrounding area. Apply glue to tube before sticking patch down. Before you put the tube back in the tyre, run your fingers over both the inside and outside of the tyre to make sure that whatever caused the puncture is not still there. To replace the tube, put the valve part way through the hole in the rim(轮圈), pump a little air in , and then feed it carefully under the tyre, Push the tyre over the rim and back into position. But a recent survey among primary and middle school students in major cities across the country showed that a large proportion of students do not eat their breakfast timely and properly. Many primary school students in Shanghai eat breakfast on their way to school during the morning rush. And since students have to arrive there before 8 a.m., some even take their first meal of the day into school to eat. A total of 7 per cent of students questioned in a recent city survey said they didnt eat breakfast at a regular time, either due to lack of time or appetite. Meanwhile, 80 per cent of the students said they regularly ate breakfast at home, while the remainder brought food off the street on the route to school.National nutrition standards state that breakfast should provide 30% of the daily recommended energy and nutrients(营养学)needed for the body. Experts say that students who dont get a proper breakfast many suffer from a lack of concentration, restlessness and fatigue. Research also shows that an improper breakfast is one of the main reasons for the rising number of obese children in the country.Skipping breakfast can lead to over-secretion of digestive enzymes(消化酶),which is harmful to the digestive system. This affects the appetite and children may over-eat later in the day. Medical experts also point out that peoples life styles affect their breakfast eating habits. Sleeping late and getting up late among local families has resulted in many parents neglecting their childrens breakfast. All life depends on energy from sunlight. Only plants can use this energy directly. Their leaves are little factories that use sunlight to make food from water and things in the soil and air. Plants in turn serve as food for all other living things. Animals can only use the suns energy after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly. What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat vegetable and fruit. We also eat meat and drink milk. This means the suns energy passes through plant to animal before it reaches us. Nature is a great thing. Any food chain always produces enough for each of its members if it is left alone. When there isnt enough food for any link in the chain, some of its members die off. So the balance is always kept.16. If one of its members dies off, any food chain will _. A. come off B. become better C. fall apart D. come into being17. Which of the following is true? A.
