Who am I? Im a shy little girl who doesnt want to ask a bunch of fierce-looking strangers to let me play with them. They wont like me, and I wont like them, and, no, I dont want to be the rope, so please couldnt I just go sit under a tree and read something? No, I cant. Mama gives me a small push.New Mexico. Texas. Colorado. Oklahoma. Louisiana. Mississippi. Caverns, rivers, lakes, parks. Its not the scenery I remember when I think of our family vacations. Because I am an only child, my parents routinely required me to engage with the children of other vacationers. They said it was for my own good. And so, feeling dragooned, I would go over to those kids, whoever they were, wherever we were, kick a stone for calmness, then introduce myself and ask to join in whatever they were doing. The results were mostly good (OK, once in a while I had to be the rope, but so did every other kid), and I wouldnt return to my family until forced to by dark or dinnertime.Eventually I came to understand that when you talk with strangers, they stop being strangers, a lesson that has served me well in my work and personal life, both of which have involved a lot of travel.I think about those childhood trips today, living, as we do, in a world reshaped by the events of 9/11 and all that has followed since. I think about them every time an American tells me hes afraid to travel abroad, that its risky, that people out there dont like Americans anymore. But I have been “out there” often these last four years, and Ive found that, although some people may disagree with our governments policies, they rarely transfer that to me.Last April, in Alexandria, Egypt, our group, all Americans, was told to stay together, to travel only in the specially arranged bus, the one protected by the armored(装甲) car. The “or else” was implied. Another journalist and I ignored the warnings and struck out on our own, on foot, to get up close and personal with an old white city by an old blue sea, and its citizens. We wandered markets, buying and eating freshly made bread. We went into stores. We sat in street cafes and drank coffee that tasted (to me) like mud, but, hey, it was Egyptian mud, so call it an adventure. And then, walking down a crowded street, we heard behind us the sound of pounding feet and somebody shouting at us. We turned to see what was going on. A man was running after us. We looked at each other. Had we made a mistake? Would now be a good time to start running? Before we could decide, the man caught up, grabbing my arm. Panting and wild-eyed, he paused to catch his breath, then smiled and handed me the half-empty plastic bottle of water Id accidentally left in his store (where Id bought nothing). Hed run six blocks to return it.I thanked him, then inquired where he and his family went to eat the freshest fish in town. He smiled again, told us where to go, even what to order, apologizing because he could not leave his store long enough to join us. 41. One who has honesty is bound by and follows moral and ethical (道德上的) standards even when making lifes hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or break other ethical standards? We feel disappointed in ourselves and ashamed. But a loss of honesty also affects our relationships with others. Trust is essential in any important relationship, whether personal or professional. Who can trust someone who is dishonest or unfair? Thus honesty must be one of our most important goals. We are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decision, making process has been weakened by stress or peer pressure. The real test of character is whether we can learn from our mistake, by understanding why we acted as we did and then exploring ways to avoid similar problems in the future.Making ethical decisions is a critical part of avoiding future problems. We must learn to recognize risks, because if we cant see the risks were taking, we cant make responsible choices. To identify risks, we need to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doesnt know the rules about plagiarism (剽窃) may accidentally use words or ideas without giving proper credit or one who fails to keep careful research notes may unintentionally fail to quote and use sources as required. But the fact that such a behavior is “unintentional” does not excuse the misconduct. Ignorance is not a defense. Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts but manage to fool themselves about the risks theyre taking by using excuses: “Everyone else does it.” or “I really need this grade.” Excuses can be very detailed: “I know Im look at anothers exam, even though Im supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but thats not cheating because Im just checking my answers, not copying.” We must be honest about our actions and avoid excuses, if we fool ourselves into believing were not doing anything wrong, we cant see the real choice were making - and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public and anyone could be watching over your shoulder. If youd rather hide your actions, thats an indication that youre taking a risk and making excuses for yourself. To decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the consequences, in the future as well as right now, negative as well as positive, and to others as well as to yourself. Those who take risks they later regret usually focus on immediate benefits and simply havent considered what might go wrong. The consequences of getting caught are serious and may include a “O” on a test or assignment, an “F” in the class, or dismissal from school and a ruined reputation. In fact, when you break a role or law, you lose control over your life and give others the power to impose punishment that you have no control over. This is an extremely vulnerable (脆弱的) position. There may be some matters of life and death or highest principle, which might justify such a risk, but there arent many things that fall in this category. Those who dont get caught pay an even higher price. A cheater doesnt learn from the test, which robs him or her of an education. Cheating weakens confidence and independence. Cheating destroys self-respect and honesty, leaving the cheater ashamed, guilty and afraid of getting caught. Worst of all, a cheater who doesnt get caught the first time usually cheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems “easier.” This only leads to disaster. Eventually, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the consequences. Students have been dismissed from school because they didnt get this simple message: Honesty is the ONLY policy that works.49. A person of honesty not only sets high moral and ethical standards but also _.A. sticks to them in their daily life B. makes them known to othersC. understands their true values D. sees that o
