名句天天见Good advice is beyond all price _年_月_日 编撰人: 李占军 审核:余开斌英语天天练23 学生姓名_ 得分_I 阅读理解(共8题;每小题2分,满分16分)1 A round of applause, please, for the Indian man who recently sang for 80 hours straight, setting a new Guinness world record. Its an impressive feat, to be sure, but lets just hope he still has a voice. According to Indian newspapers, Rajesh Burbure has been told to keep silent for several days so his vocal cords (声带) can heal.It was reported that Burbure and his family are in a celebratory mood. “Its a proud moment for all of us,” his wife told DNAI.I, on the other hand, am unable to share their enthusiasm. Dont get me wrong: I hope the 35-year-old Burbure lives forever, sells a million records and becomes an international celebrity. But his recordsinging for 80 hours straightis about as meaningful as most of the other curious but crazy feats listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.Granted , Im not qualified to speak on the subject. Ive got no world records to my name and I never expect to have any. Then again, maybe I am qualified to speak for those of us who have better things to do than train for years to sing an 80-hour medley (混合曲) of pop songs. But lets not just pick on poor Burbure. Hes not the only person chasing meaningless accolades. The Guinness Book of World Records is full of the names of people who at one time grew the longest hair, or built the biggest bicycle, or baked the largest cheesecake. To all of these enterprising (有进取心的) souls I ask, simply, “What was it all for?”Congratulations! For all of your painstaking effort, you became a footnote in a thick book that no one reads, except for you and the person who will eventually surpass youwith one more hour of singing, a few more centimeters of steel or a few more pounds of cheese. After all, records are made to be broken.1.From the text, we can learn that the author . A.has no Guinness records, so he admires Burbures featB.feels it is a pity he was not invited to share the happiness with the BurburesC.thinks singing for 80 hours straight is completely meaninglessD.is quite worried about Burbures vocal cords2.Before someone wins a Guinness record, he or she has to .A.become an international celebrity B.know all about Guinness recordC.practice a great deal D.bear great stress for fear of injury3.We can infer from the article that .A.after the 80 hours of singing, Burbure could no longer speakB.Burbure wife didnt support his attempt to make a Guinness recordC.many have criticized Burbure for his stupid behaviorD.challenging a Guinness record may be harmful to the health4.What is the best title for the passage?A.What Was the Point?B.Records Are Made to be BrokenC.A New Indian Guinness RecordD.The Guinness Book Is Boring2I shall never forget the night,a few years ago, when Marion J.Douglas was a student in one of my adulteducation classes. He told us how tragedy had struck at his home, not once, but twice. The first time he had lost his fiveyearold daughter. He and his wife thought they couldnt bear that first loss;but,as he said,“Ten months later,God gave us another little girl and she died in five days.”This double bereavement was almost too much to bear. “I couldnt take it,” this father told us,“I couldnt sleep, eat, rest or relax. My nerves were entirely shaken and my confidence gone. ”At last he went to doctors;one recommended sleeping pills and another recommended a trip, but neither helped. He said,“My body felt as if it was surrounded in a vice (大钳子),and the jaws of the vice were being drawn tighter and tighter.” The tension of grief (悲伤)if you have ever been paralyzed (使瘫痪) by sorrow, you know what he meant.“But thank God,I had one child lefta fouryearold son. He gave me the solution to my problem. One afternoon as I sat around feeling sorry for myself,he asked,Daddy, will you build a boat for me? I was in no mood to build a boat;in fact,I was in no mood to do anything. But my son is a persistent little fellow!I had to give in. Building that toy boat took me about three hours. By the time it was finished,I realized that those three hours spent building that boat were first hours of mental relaxation and peace that I had had in months!I realized that it is difficult to worry while you are busy doing something that requires planning and thinking. In my case, building the boat had knocked worry out of the ring. So I determined to keep busy.”“The following night,I made a list of jobs that ought to be done. Scores of items needed to be repaired. Amazingly,I had made a list of 242 items that needed attention. During the last two years I have completed most of them. I am busy so that I have no time for worry.”No time for worry! That is exactly what Winston Churchill said when he was working eighteen hours a day at the height of the war. When he was asked if he worried about his huge responsibilities,he said,“I am too busy. I have no time for worry.”5.The underlined word “bereavement” in the second paragraph refers to_.A.having lost a loved one B.having lost a valuable articleC.having lost a profitmaking business D.having lost a wellpaid job6.Marion felt his body as if it was caught in a vice because_.A.he couldnt earn enough money to support his familyB.he was suffering from sleeplessness diseaseC.he couldnt get out of mental pressureD.he felt tired of adulteducation classes7.Marion made a list of over 200 items that needed to be repaired because_.A.he hadnt been able to spare time to mend themB.he wanted to kill his free time by repairing themC.the items had actually been broken and needed attentionD.repairing the items helped crowd worry out of his mind8.At the end of the passage, the author wrote about Winston Churchill in order to_.A.prove that he followed Churchills example B.support his students solution to his problemC.show that he was successful in his career D.clarify how his conclusion was reachedII语法填空(每题1分,共10分) Lake Titicaca, a famous lake in South America, is located on the border between Bolivia and Peru.
