There are 60,000 stone statues in total. It is excellent representative works of stone carvings, produced during the period of the ancient Chinese Buddhist grotto art. Dazu Rock Carvings contains all the Cliffside carvings in Dazu County. The collection is composed of the rock carvings in Beishan, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shimenshan as well as Shizhuanshan, all of which are of the highest artistic attainment and demonstrate the most exquisite skills. And in December 1999, DCR were admitted into the world cultural heritage list.Dazu County, reputed as the county of rock carving, has an area of 1,400 square kilometers (about 540.5 square miles), and it covers a history of 1,230 years since it came into existence in 758 during the Tang Dynasty (618-907).The Dazu Rock Carvings was built from 650 in the Tang Dynasty and continued to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). It is as famous as the Mogao Cave in Dunhuang, Gansu Province. The rock carvings in these places are very distinguished both at home and abroad. Among the rock carvings, there are more than 5,000 statues and over100, 000 Chinese characters of inscriptions and epigraphs. The Buddhist statues dominate in this rock carving group, and the Taoist and the Confucian stone figures can also be seen. DRC established a new styled art form that evolved from the traditional grotto art in their subjiecs, artistic forms and aesthetic conception!According to the schedule, today we will visit the rock carvings in baoding mountain! Baodingshan is located 15 kilometers to the northeast of longgang Town, seat of Dazu country. Baodingshan Rock Carvings include those at Dafowan and Xiaofowan centering around the Saint Longevity Monastery. These carvings were created under the supervision of zhao zhifeng in more than70 years. He was a famous monk and a native. Of dazu, he became a monk when he was very young, and at the age of 16 he traveled west to hangzhou and mimu. 3 years later, he returned home to spread the tantric Buddhism and establish his sect. The tantric Buddhism established by him influenced many people, therefore baodingshan attracted a large numbers of pilgrims and common people in the southern song dynasty. And this situation lasts until today! With nearly 10000 statues, the rock carvings at Baodingshan form in a large ritual site of Tantric Buddhism. Moreover,it is the locus of elite in Dazu Rock Carvings ,and it have reached a new peak.Actually, dafowan is a hill in the shape of horseshoe. The surroundings statues vary considerably, Buddhist images and sages, historical figures, realistic scenes and so on.And now I will introduce one of them to you in detail. That is the carving of JIULONGYUTAIZI IN CHINESE, or called nine dragons bathing the prince. On the top of the rock is a pool. Water in the pool is channeled to the mouths of the 9 dragons among clouds. The dragons spout the pool water over the body who sits in a basin held by the 2 men of unusual strength. The baby bathing suggests the birth of sakyamuni. The Buddhist scripture says that when the prince was born , nine dragons flew down from heaven, spouting out both cold and warm water to bath him.
