A new study finds that these big-winged birds carefully position their wingtips and flap(拍动) at the same rate, probably to catch the upward movement of air and save energy during flight. There are two reasons birds might fly in a V formation: It may make flight easier, or theyre simply following the leader. Squadrons(中队) of planes can save fuel by flying in a V formation, and many scientists suspect that migrating birds to the same. Models that treated flapping birds like fixed-wing airplanes show that they probably save energy by drafting off each other, but currents created by airplanes are far more stable than those coming off of birds. Just as aerodynamic(气动力) calculations would predict the birds positioned themselves to fly just behind and to the side of the bide in the timing of the flapping reserved(相反的) so that it could minimize the effects of the downdraft coming off the back of the birds body. “We didnt think this was possible.” Usherwood says, considering that the difficult achievement requires careful flight and incredible awareness of ones neighbors. “Perhaps these big V formation birds can be thought of quite like an airplane with wings that go up and down.” The findings likely apply to other long-winged birds, such as pelicans and geese, Usherwood says. Smaller birds create more complex wakes(尾波) that would make drafting too difficult. The researchers did not attempt to calculate the birds energy savings because the necessary physiological measurements would be too invasive for an endangered species. Previous studies show that birds can use 20% to 30% less energy while flying in a V. Scientists do not know how the birds find that aerodynamic sweet spot, but they suspect that the animals line themselves up either by sight of sensing air currents through their feathers. In future studies, the research will switch to more common birds, such as pigeons or geese. They plan to leader can ripple through the rest of the flock to cause traffic jams.1.The author takes squadrons of planes for example to show_.A. birds may save energy by flying in a V formationB. birds fly in a V formation for many more reasonsC. planes flying in V formation follow the leaderD. planes flying in a V formation are more economical2. Why did Usherwood think it impossible for a bird to fly directly behind another? A. Because birds differ from airplanes in wings. B. Because birds know nothing about aerodynamics. C. Because birds could hardly create stable currents as planes.D. Because birds have to overcome great difficulties when flying.3. What is the scientists attitude toward the findings mentioned in the passage? A. Cautious B. Contradictory C. Confidence D. Critical4. What would the researchers do in their future studies about the birds? A. Calculate the birds energy savings. B. Apply the findings to smaller birds. C. Find how the birds line themselves up. D. Do research on more common birds. C The loudest public food fight/ right now is bout GMOs (转基因生物), or genetically modified organisms. Scientists add genes to corn, soybeans, and other plants, usually to protect the crops from insects or herbicides. Proponents say that makes crops easier to grow and cheaper while opponents believe that GMOs have been linked to depression, allergies, infertility, and even cancer. Many consumers and food-safety inspectors worry that GMOs cause an unnatural threat to health and the environment. Although GMOs have been in our food supply for 20 years, the controversy has moved to center stage. recent documentaries and experts on The Doctor Oz Show have fanned the flames. About 75 percent of consumers say they are concerned about the safety of genetically modified foods. Two states in the USA recently passed bills requiring labeling of all food made with GMOs; many other states are considering mandatory labeling. The European Union already requires labeling, and several countries, including France, have banned the planting of genetically modified crops. So are GMOs safe- of should you avoid them at all costs? Here, a look the evidence. Roughly 90% of the corn, canola, soybeans, and sugar beets grown in the United States have bits of DNA that originally came from a lab. Unless youve been eating only food labeled 100percent organic - which must be GMO-free - you probably have GMOs in your system now. In a big red-flag-raising study, French researchers for two years. “Genetics engineeerying can have unintended consequences.” Says Bill Freese, science policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety. Artificial genes force plants produce unnatural proteins, he says, and no one knows how those may affect human health. But scientists immediately criticized the French study. For on thing, types of rats used in the study were highly prone(倾向于) to cancer, so it was predictable that some would develop tumors after eating GMOs, notes Nina Fedoroff, a professor of biology and life sciences at Penn State University. She adds, “Weve eaten these foods for 20 years and arent walking around with giant tumors.” In September, the editors of Scientific American denounced the efforts to label GMOs foods, stating that theres no proff that GMOs can endanger peoples health. Adding genes to crops isnt any more dangerous than traditional breeding, which farmers have done for thousands of years, the American Association for the Advancement of Science declared in 2012. old methods of modifying crops mixed tens of thousands of genes with unpredictable results. The fact that scientists can now insert single genes into corn or soybeans shouldnt raise any new alarms, says Fedoroff. There doesnt appear to be a scientific reason to ban GMO foods from your cupboard to protect your health. But it is healthy to limit your intake of the processed foods that often contain them. And dont assume that GMO-free packaged good is necessarily healthy. Organic cookies can still contain too much sugar or salt.1.Which of the following have made the argument about GMOs fiercer?A. Some consumers and inspectors.B. Some documentaries and experts.C. Some newspapers and magazines.D. Some scientists and administrators.2. We can infer from the passage that _.A. some countries like France have suffered severely from GMOs.B. most crops grown in the United States are genetically modified.C. EU consumers can buy GMOs or GMO-free foods as they like.D. GMO-free foods can hardly be found in American markets now.3. The underlined word “denounced” in Paragraph 7 means “_”.A. condemned B. confirmed C. advocated D. assessed4. The author writes the passage for the purpose of _.A. appealing to people to reject GMO foodsB. proving GMO good harmless for humansC. sharing with people opinions about GMOsD. throwing doubt on the results of researches D In the past 15 years, Chad Pregracke has helped pull more than 67,000 tires from the Mississippe River and other waterways across the United States. But thats just scratching the surface. Hes also helped remove 218 washing machines, 19 tractors, 12 hot tubs, four pianos and almost 1,000 refrigerators. For Pregracke, removing this debris - pieces of wood, metal, brick, etc. -has become his lifes work. Sometimes called “The Rivers Garbageman”, he lives on a barge(驳船) about nine months out of the year with members of his 12-person crew. Together, they organize community cleanups along rivers across the country. Its a dirty job, but Pregrack took it on because he realized that no one was doing it. It began as a solo(独自的) effort, and over the years his energy and enthusiasm have helped it grow. To date, about 70,000 volunteers have joined him, helping collect more than 7 million pounds of debris through his non-profit. Pregracke grew up in East Moline, Illinois, where the Mississippi River was in his backyard. As a teenager, he worked as commercial shell diver and began to notice the heaps of debris in the waterway - one that supplies drinking water to 18 million people in more than 50 US cities. “I saw thousands of barrels, thousands of tires, cars, trucks and tops of school buses I got sick of seeing it and by himself. He would transport the trash out of the water.” Pregracke got a small fund from a company in 1997 and spent that summer cleaning a 35-mile stretch of the river by himself. He would transport the trash by boat and sort it on his parents lawn to be recycles. By years end, he had single-handedly pulled around 45,000 pounds of trash out of the water. His non-profit now has a fleet of boats. And while he has resources and know-how, he depends on each community he visits to supply the manpower needed to get the job done. At the cleanup sites, Pregracke humor creates cheerful atmosphere - something he knows is necessary for the work that they do. His team uses motivational speeches and music to get the volunteers amped up(陶醉). “We do everything in our power to get people excited about it,” Pregracke said. “We want people to leave feeling good about what they did so theyll contribute more here.” Pregracke views his work as a different kind of service to the country. “A lot of people call me a conservationist or an environmentalist, but the thing is Im no diff
