The first experiments to test this hypothesis, published recently on the pre-print server bioRxiv, suggest that in at least one case, plants can hear, and it confers a real evolutionary advantage.Hadanys team looked at evening primroses (Oenothera drummondii) and found that within minutes of sensing vibrations from pollinators wings, the plants temporarily increased the concentration of sugar in their flowers nectar. In effect, the flowers themselves served as ears, picking up the specific frequencies of bees wings while tuning out irrelevant sounds like wind.As an evolutionary theoretician, Hadany says her question was prompted by the realization that sounds are a ubiquitous natural resourceone that plants would be wasting if they didnt take advantage of it as animals do. If plants had a way of hearing and responding to sound, she figured, it could help them survive and pass on their genetic legacy.Since pollination is key to plant reproduction, her team started by investigating flowers. Evening primrose, which grows wild on the beaches and in parks around Tel Aviv, emerged as a good candidate, since it has a long bloom time and produces measurable quantities of nectar. To test the primroses in the lab, Hadanys team exposed plants to five sound treatments: silence, recordings of a honeybee from four inches away, and computer-generated sounds in low, intermediate, and high frequencies. Plants given the silent treatmentplaced under vibration- blocking glass jarshad no significant increase in nectar sugar concentration. The same went for plants exposed to high-frequency (158 to 160 kilohertz) and intermediate-frequency (34 to 35 kilohertz) sounds. But for plants exposed to playbacks of bee sounds (0.2 to 0.5 kilohertz) and similarly low-frequency sounds (0.05 to 1 kilohertz), the final analysis revealed an unmistakable response. Within three minutes of exposure to these recordings, sugar concentration in the plants increased from between 12 and 17 percent to 20 percent.A sweeter treat for pollinators, their theory goes, may draw in more insects, potentially increasing the chances of successful cross-pollination. Indeed, in field observations, researchers found that pollinators were more than nine times more common around plants another pollinator had visited within the previous six minutes.58. The purpose of Hadanys experiments is to _ .A. test if plants can hearB. investigate the nectar of flowersC. identify the function of soundsD. determine the frequencies of bees wings59. Why did the researchers choose Evening Primrose as the subject of the experiment?A. Because it is sensitive to different sounds.B. Because it is easily accessible and measurable.C. Because it increases nectar sugar concentration.D. Because it takes advantage of sounds as animals do.60. Which frequency sounds increase sugar concentration most?A. Silence.B. High frequency sounds.C. Low frequency sounds. D. Intermediate-frequency sounds.CText messages are delicately close but distant at the same time. In addition to strengthening relationships, they can give us a loving impulse during those moments of the day when we need them the most. Furthermore, they can enrich the bond with our romantic partner. However, theres an unavoidable catch. To understand this better, all we have to do is reflect on all those ways in which messaging services affect our relationship. Social networks, as well as the use of messaging services, are channels where we unconsciously reflect our insecurities. Consequently, they lead to cognitive reactions such as jealousy, suspicion, and obsessive thoughts. At the beginning of a relationship, we probably send our partner messages every half hour. However, its very likely that at some point itll be impossible to maintain this flow of communication. When this happens, one of the two partners may start to become suspicious, panic, and wonder if something is wrong. With the rise of messaging in relationships, our bonds are put to the test. Namely, with that famous double blue tick that appears after our partner has read our message. Seeing that our partner is online with someone that isnt us can create awkward and conflicting situations. In fact, some people stop being productive altogether in their jobs due to the fact that theyre constantly checking if their partner is online.Messaging services arent good effective communication channels. Despite popular belief, these apps can cause constant miscommunication. Miscommunication doesnt happen as frequently when we talk face to face. This is because we can decipher our partners basic nonverbal communication face to face.Messaging services are the perfect places for passive-aggressive behaviors. There are many studies that support this fact. For instance, disconnecting is a common and immature behavior that can lead to painful situations. The fact that we have a cell phone or computer doesnt mean we make good use of it. especially when it comes to using messaging services such as WhatsApp. We carry our partners in our pockets. Love is portable in the twenty-first century, and we dont always make good use of it. Therefore, the new technologies or constant advances arent at fault. Were the ones at fault because we dont advance in tune with these fabulous resources that, after all, exist to make our lives easier. We should try to avoid these situations by educating young people better. Above all, we should try to make this resource an enriching mechanism for our relationships by starting with ourselves. We can do this by managing our emotions, trusting our partner, and understanding that authentic communication, the most satisfying type, is the one that we do face to face and not through an app.61.What does the underlined word “catch” in Para. 2 mean?A. Benefit.B. Reflection.C. Problem.D. Consequence.62.According to th
