A lot, according to Northeastern psychology professor David DeSteno, and his colleagues, who are conducting a research to determine how humans decide to trust strangers. The interdisciplinary (跨学科的) research project, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is being conducted together with Cynthia Breazeal, director of the MIT Media Labs Personal Robots Group, Robert Frank, an economist, and David Pizarro, a psychologist, both from Cornell. The researchers are examining whether gestures could affect our trustworthiness judgments. “People tend to mimic(模仿) each others body language,” said DeSteno, “which might help them develop intuitions(直觉)about what other people are feeling.”This project tests their theories by having humans interact with the social robot, Nexi, in an attempt to judge her trustworthiness. Without knowing the participants, Nexi has been programmed to make gestures while speaking with selected participantsgestures that the team thinks could determine whether or not shes considered trustworthy.During the first part of the experiment, Nexi makes small talk with them for 10 minutes, asking and answering questions about topics such as traveling, where theyre from and what they like most about living in Boston.“The goal was to create a normal conversation with accompanying movements to see what the mind would intuitively(直觉地) collect about the trustworthiness of another,” said DeSteno. The participants then play an economic game called “Give Some”, which asks them to determine how much money Nexi might give them at the expense of her individual profit. Meanwhile, they decide how much, if any, theyll give to Nexi. The rules of the game allow for two distinct outcomes: higher individual profit for one and loss for the other, or relatively smaller and equal profits for both partners.“Trust mightnt be determined by only one gesture, but rather a dance that happens between the strangers, which leads them to trust or not trust the other,” said DeSteno, who will continue testing their theories by seeing if Nexi can be taught to predict the trustworthiness of human partners.解题导语:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了一项关于“信任”的研究。该研究利用一个智能机器人与人的交流来进行,具有跨学科性,涉及经济、心理和科技领域。21How many fields does the research involve?ATwo fields. Although technically accurate, that is an impersonal assessment of an enormous and very human problem. The homeless population represents all of us Americans. It includes men and women, the elderly, children, and infants. Its members are from all ethnic groups. What they have in common is poverty.Currently in the U. S. , thirtynine million people live in poverty. When money is really tight, paying the rent or buying food often becomes a choice. Government assistance in the form of food stamps does help but, as one homeless man explains, you cant pay the rent with food stamps. With no money for rent, the streets and homeless shelters become the alternative.Although men constitute the largest group within the homeless population, homeless women with children are rapidly joining them. In fact, one quarter of the homeless people in the U. S. are teenagers and young children.People may become homeless for numerous reasons. However, there are certain factors that many of these individuals have in common. They include a lack of adequate education and job skills. A majority of the teenagers and adults have not completed high school. The abuse of alcohol and drugs is also a common factor. One third of the adult homeless population abuses alcohol. While one quarter of the same group uses drugs. Some members of this population suffer mental health problems. Within the past several years many institutions for the mentally ill have been closed and their patients sent “home”. Unfortunately, a number of those people have no home to go to and they are unable to adequately look after themselves.Job loss in todays economy has also become a real factor in the loss of peoples homes. The breakup of families through abandonment and divorce is also contributing factors, particularly when there are children involved. The parent who is left to care for the kids with inadequate income may be forced to depend on the homeless shelters to put a roof over their heads.解题导语:美国政府将无家可归的人的定义失去了人文关怀,虽然导致这些弱势群体出现的原因有很多,但是,毋庸置疑的是他们正备受生活的煎熬,而且这个群体正在逐渐扩大。25The writer thinks that the U. S. governments definition for the homeless reveals_.Aan insincere attitude toward the homelessBan
