They found to their amazement that modern forest and savanna elephants are as distinct from each other as Asian elephants and mammoths. The scientists used detailed genetic analysis to prove that the African savanna elephant and the African forest elephant have been distinct species for several million years. The divergence of the two species took place around the time of the divergence of Asian elephants and woolly mammoths. This result amazed all the scientists. There has long been debate in the scientific community that the two might be separate species, but this is the most convincing scientific evidence so far that they are indeed different species.Previously, many naturalists believed that African savanna elephants and African forest elephants were two populations of the same species, despite the elephants significant size differences. The savanna elephant has an average shoulder height of 3.5metres while the forest elephant has an average shoulder height of 2.5metres. The savanna elephant weighs between six and seven tons, roughly double the weight of the forest elephant. But the fact that they look so different does not necessarily mean they are different species. However, the proof lay in the analysis of the DNA.Alfred Roca, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, said, “We now have to treat the forest and savanna elephants as two different units for conservation purposes. Since 1950, all African elephants have been conserved as one species. Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are two very distinctive animals, the forest elephant should become a bigger priority (优先)for conservation purposes.”16One of the fossils studied by the researchers is that of _.Athe Asian elephantBthe forest elephantCthe savanna elephantDthe mastodon elephant17The underlined word “divergence” in Paragraph 4 means “_”.Aevolution BexhibitionCseparation Dexamination18The researchers conclusion was based on a study of the African elephants _.ADNA BheightCweight Dpopulation19What are Alfred Rocas words mainly about?AThe conservation of African elephants.BThe purpose of studying African elephants.CThe way to divide African elephants into two units.DThe reason for the distinction of African elephants.20Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?ANaturalists Beliefs about ElephantsBAmazing Experiments about ElephantsCAn Unexpected Finding about ElephantsDA Long Scientific Debate about Elephants. 1 Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Do you want to work indoors or outdoors, directly serve people in need or serve people behind the scenes? These are the typical questions that a volunteer service agency would ask.2 Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the west offer volunteer services. Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old, the young, the weak, the sick, the disabled and the injured to overcome difficulties.3 Volunteers usually help in many different ways. They may give people advice, offer friendship to the young, drive the elderly to church, counsel kids against drugs. Work as an assistant in a school or nursing home, raise funds, plant trees, help out in local libraries and do many other things.4 Volunteering can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, time during the day, evenings or weekends, either part time or full time. Anybody _ can become a volunteer.5 The art of volunteering is a process of both giving and receiving. Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and make new friends and mix with people from all walks of life. Volunteering is an excellent way to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. Volunteering is a great way to develop good teamwork skills, discover your individual talents and explore career choices. Being a volunteer takes individuals on a wonderful journey and helps them learn many important things beyond their school learning.21What is the best title of the passage? (no more than 10 words)_22What advantages can volunteer service bring volunteers besides making new friends? (no more than 9 words)_23Please fill in the blank in the fourth paragraph with proper words, phrases or sentence to complete the sentence. (no more than 10 words)_24What kind of volunteer jobs would you like to take? Why? (no more than 30 words)_25What does the word “it” (Line 3, Paragraph 2) probably refer to? (no more than 4 words)_课时作业(九).1.C考查宾语从句。 pay special attention to中的to是介词,后面的句子作to的宾语,在宾语从句中缺主语,故选what。 (be)in danger“(处于)危险中”。 the names and addresses of his friends和write 是动宾关系,所以用被动语态。 in the possession of “被拥有”;in the charge of “由负责”;at the mercy of “受/听任摆布”;at the risk of “冒的危险”。 How many is the population of China?应说Whats the population of China?9C考查动词时态和语态。 be applied ton. 联系空后 “so we must take measures to protect them”我们知道,很多野生动物将要灭绝。 本题为一个含有比较状语从句的复合句,第三个as引导的是比较状语从句,其完整结构为“as all other animals on the earth are endangered”,endangered承前省略了,由于主语“all other animals on the earth”比较长,故采用了倒装结构,将谓语动词are提前,以避免头重脚轻。. 根据第三段Once they obtained DNA sequences(序列)from two fossils(化石),mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. The scientists used detailed genetic analysis to prove that the African savanna elephant and the African forest elephant have been distinct species for several million years可知,科学家已证实,非洲的草原大象与非洲的森林大象几百万年来都不属于同一品种,即可推断两种大象的分离应发生在由此可推断画线词应意为separation,故选C项。 根据第三段Once they obtained DNA sequences(序列)from two fossils(化石),mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. They found to their amazement that modern forest and savanna elephants are as distinct from each other as Asian elephants and mammoths可判断研究者的结论是建立在对非洲大象的DNA的研究结果的基础上的,故选A项。 Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are tw
