One day, science says a glass of red wine a day will help us live longer. The next day, maybe not. It seems journalists are pretty interested in wine research and the same might be said for coffee. Now theres been a lot of research into whether coffees good for our health. “The results have really been mixed”,admits Neal Freedman who led the coffee study and published his findings in a medical journal recently. “Theres been some evidence that coffee might increase the risk of certain diseases and theres also been maybe more recent evidence that coffee may protect against other diseases as well”.Freedman and his colleagues undertook the biggest study yet to look at the relationship between coffee and health. They analyzed data collected from more than 400,000 Americans aged 50 to 70 participating in the study. “We found that the coffee drinkers had a modestly lower risk of death than the non-drinkers,”he said. Heres what he means by “modestly”: those who drank at least two or three cups a day were about 10 percent or 15 percent less likely to die for any reason during the 13 years of the study when the researchers looked at specific causes of death, coffee drinking appeared to cut the risk of dying from heart disease, lung disease ,injuries, accidents and infections. Now, Freedman stressed that the study doesnt prove coffee can make people live longer.A study like this can never prove a cause-and-effect relationship. All it can really do is to point researchers in the right direction for further investigation. And even if it turns out that coffee is really good for you, scientists have no idea why.21. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. According to the author, scientists_.A. have already proved that coffee is good for human healthB. have a long way to go before they find a way to study coffeeC. have avoided the cause-and-effect approach to study coffeeD. are still unable to figure out why coffee is good for us23. For example, if in the past, someone in Dads family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be a skeleton in his familys closet. He really wouldnt want any neighbor to know about it.”“Why pick on my family?” Jessicas father said with anger. “Your family history isnt so good, you know. Wasnt your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?” “Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.” “Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse. After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessicas parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessicas closet. Just as she opened the door and reached to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessicas mother sank in a faint(晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.“What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the schools skeleton, Mum,” explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. There have been a number of times in the past when its survival has been a question of touch and go. ”“I believe that the long-term future of the human race must be in space,” he said. “It will be difficult enough to avoid disasters on planet Earth in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand, or million.”Hawking, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year, has recently voiced many concerns about the future of life on Earth.“If aliens visited us, the outcome would be as much as when Columbus landed in America, which didnt turn out well for the Native Americans”, he said. “Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads (游牧者), looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach. ”But Hawking says hes still hopeful for the future of humanity. He told Big Think. “Weve made remarkable progress in the last hundred years. But if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space.”Getting to another planet will prove a challenge, not to mention colonizing it for humanity. Katherine Freese from University of Michigan told Big Think that “The nearest star to Earth is Proxima Centauri which is 4. 2 light years away.
