信丰中学高三英语二轮复习“七选五”专题训练2020.4Passage 1Choosing the right job is probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life, and it is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make. One important question that you might ask yourself is: “How do I get a good job?”_1_.There are people who can answer an insignificant advertisement in the local paper and land the best job in the world;others write to all sorts of places all over the country, and never seem to get a reply at all.Still others believe that the in person, doortodoor approach is by far the best way to get a job;and then there are those who, through no active decision of their own, just seem to be in the right place at the right time._2_.He used to spend a lot of his free time down by the sea watching the tall ships, but never thinking that he might one day sail one of them. His father was a farmer, and being a sailor could never be anything for the boy but an idle dream. One day,on his usual wandering,he heard the captain of the ship complaining that he could not sail because one member of his crew was sick.Without stopping to think, the lad(少年) offered to take his place._3_._4_.If the lad had gone home to ponder(考虑)his decision for a week,he may have missed his chance. It is one thing to be offered an opportunity;it is another thing to take it and use it well.Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all the rules and still seem to land plum jobs(美差)When you go for a job interview or fill out an application, you are expected to say nice things about the company to which you are applying._5_.And within a year this person had become general manger of the company.AThis story also illustrates the importance of seizing an opportunity when it presents itself.BPeople find jobs in an infinite number of ways.CIts almost impossible to find a good job by answering advertisements in newspapers.DTake, for example, the young man who wanted to be a sailor.EBut there was one person who landed an excellent job by telling the interviewer all the companys faults.FHe spent the rest of his life happily sailing the ships he had always loved.GIt is very important to seize an opportunity when it presents itself.Passage 2 Choosing to Study OverseasEvery year, thousands of students choose to study in another country for a semester, the summer,or a year.Studying overseas can be an exciting experience for many people._1_Living in another country can help you to learn a language, and about another culture._2_Overseas study may also look good on your future resume. Many companies today want employees who speak a second language,or have experienced living or working in another country.Making the right choiceOnce you decide to study overseas, you have to make some choices. To choose the right country or school, ask yourself: Where do I want to go and why? How much do I want to pay?_3_Do I want to live with a host family, with roommates,or alone?Getting ready to goGet your passport and visa early!_4_Learn about the money.Bring some of it,and a credit card, with you.Once you are thereAfter the first few weeks overseas, many students will feel a little homesick. They may miss their family, friends, and familiar ways of doing things._5_When you feel sad or homesick, try to talk to others,or write about your feelings in a notebook.AWhy do it?BHow long do I want to study overseas?CYou should improve your mother tongue before you go.DA large number of students cant afford to study overseas.EYou will see the world in a new way,and learn more about yourself.FRemember that it takes time to get used to a new place, school, and culture.GBefore you go,learn some of the language, and read about some common customs in your host country.Passage 3Since the prehistoric times, man has had an urge to satisfy his needs, but as we climbed the steps of evolution with giant leaps,we somehow left behind common sense and logical thinkingwe forgot that we have stopped thinking ahead of times. If you are hungry, what do you do? Grab a piece of your favorite meal and stay quiet after that?_1_But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your favorite star and many such absurd things. When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think “What happens next?”,“Why cant I think?”Well this is the aftermath of using our brain for thinking of notsoworthy things.Hunger of the mind can be actually satisfied through extensive reading. Now why reading and not watching TV?_2_Just like that to develop other aspects of our life,we have to take advantage of reading. You have innumerable number of books in this world which will answer all your “How to?” questions._3_Now this seed is unknowingly used by you in your future to develop new ideas. The same seed if used many times, can help you link and relate a lot of things,of which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams! This is nothing other than creativity. The larger number of books you read, your mind will open up like never before. Also this improves your speaking skills to a large extent and also makes a significant contribution to your vocabulary in writing._4_Actually,I had a problem in speaking English fluently, but as I read,I could improve significantly._5_ So guys do join me and give food for your thoughts by reading, reading and more reading. Now what are you waiting for?ASoon you will find no difficulty employing the right words when speaking.BThe interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed.CI am still on the path of improvement to satisfy my thirst.DJust like your stomach, even your mind is hungry.EBecause reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from the childhood.FWithin no time you never seem to run out of the right words at the right time.GBecause watching TV too often will make you a “couch potato”Passage 4A man was driving at 70 miles in a 40milezone,when a police car came behind him with the light on._1_As the policeman came to him,he said,“Hi,officer,I guess you caught me a little bit over the limit.I was in a rush to get home,to be with my wife and kids, you know my younger son wasnt feeling too well when I left home this morning.”The policeman said,“Well,I guess so,” and started writing something in his notebook._2_.A few moments later, the policeman came to his window and handed him a paper, and returned to his car without saying a single word. The man started to wonder, how much this ticket was going to be as he began to look at the paper._3_“I had a daughter who was killed by a speeding car at the age of six by a speeding driver like you.He got a fine,a few months in prison, and was free, free to hug two other daughters._4_I have tried to forgive that man a thousand times, and I thought I had.Maybe I really did forgive him,but I have to do it again, even right now._5_”The man was very surprised and could not move for the next few minutes. When finally he did,he drove slowly, even a few miles under the speed limit, praying for forgiveness.ASo pray for you,and be careful when you drive again, your daughter is all you have left.BI only had one and now I have to wait until I get to heaven before I can hug her again.CRight away the man started thinking of excuse to give.DHe was surprised it was not a ticket as he began to read.ESo pray for me,and be careful when you drive again,my son is all I have left.FAs minutes went by,he could see from the side view mirror, the policeman was still writing.GHe was surprised it was not a ticket but a receipt(收据)Passage 5Do you constantly use the computer, whether for learning or entertainment? Computers give off radiation that is bad for your health, but here are some ways to protect yourself from computer radiation._1_Green tea can be absorbed by the body easily into a form of vitamin A,which helps reduce radiation._2_It is advisable to attach a radiation filter plate(辐射过滤板)in front of your computers screen.Make sure to avoid putting any metal substances near your computer as these may have reflected some of the electromagnetic waves that are harmful to your health._3_The brighter the screen the higher the radiation there will be and vice versa. You can also put some radiationabsorbing plants such as several cacti near your computer to prevent radiation.Make sure you do a skincare protection before sitting in front of the computer._4_Wash your face soon after using the computer in order to reduce 70% of the radiation._5_Old computer in general, has one to two times more radiations released than the new one within the same distance.AAnd adjust the brightness of your computer screen.BApply a layer of facial mask to protect yourself.CAnd adjust the sound level on your computer.DThe most efficient way is by drinking some coffee regularly.EThe simplest way is by drinking 2 & 3 cups of green tea every day.FIf possible, purchase a new computer instead of using an old model computer.GIt also helps keep our eyes see things clearly in the dark by improving the visual ability.Passage 6 English,You Are So PopularEnglish is the world language, the language of international communication in many areas of life;trade, air and sea transport, tourism and sport.New ideas in science, technology and medicine happen so quickly that it is impossible and very expensive to translate everything into different languages._1_ If you want to study some subject, you need to know professional words and phrases.English is used as a first language in countries such as Australia,Canada, Ireland,New Zealand, the USA and many of the countries in the Caribbean._2_It is a way in which people who have different languages communicate with each other. This is especially true in many parts of Africa and India._3_Australian,American or Irish English has another pronunciation or stresses,so sometimes you cannot understand, although you can speak English. The USA has no official national language.English is used like a natural language by all Americans, because it is very simple. The American variety is popular between nonative speakers, too.English is far more worldwide in its distribution(分布) than all other spoken languages.25% to 33% of the people in the world understand and speak English to some degree. And most of them can use English freely._4_In 2001,the 189 member countries in the United Nations were asked what language they wished to use for communication with other countries.More than120 chose English,40 selected French, and 20 wanted to use Spanish._5_However,the percentage of Internet users who are not native English speakers is increasing rapidly, especially in Asia.AIt has become the most useful language.BTherefore, most things are published in English.CIn other countries it is used as a second language.DHowever,English in all these countries is not the same.EEnglish is also the language particularly on the Internet.FThere are at least 165 languages spoken in the United States.GTherefore,it is not surprising that all languages change through time.Passage 7The Winners Guide to SuccessHow do successful people think? When you live your life on purpose, youll try your best to do your job or study as well as you can. You love what you do and you can find pleasure in what you do.Write a planIt is very difficult trying to get what you want without a good plan. 3 A good plan is like a map to you. Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map” youll enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time.Be willing to pay the priceNothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you wont get anything valuable.Never give up4 When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.5Once an American writer was writing a novel. He could not have a good ending for his book until one night when he had a very good idea. He was so excited that he made a phone call to one of his best friends. “Ive got a perfect idea,” he said, “Ill put it down later and show it to you.” But he never did, because he died that night. His book was left without a perfect ending. So remember, do what you can right away. Never delay at all.A. It is just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away.B. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. 1 When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. 2 One of them exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. 3 But all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means practice.Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? 4 Its because those who cannot read or write have to remember things.
