A meteorologist(气象学者) has done some estimates and the results might surprise you.Lets start with a very simple white puffy cloud a cumulus cloud(积云). How much does the water in a cumulus cloud weigh? Peggy LeMone, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, did the numbers. The water in the little cloud weighs about 550 tons, she calculates. Or if you want to convert it to something that might be a little more meaningful think of elephants. The thought of a hundred elephants-worth of water suspended(悬浮的) in the sky begs another question what keeps it up there?First of all, the water isnt in elephant-sized particles(微粒), its in tiny tiny tiny particles, explains LeMone. And those particles float on the warmer air thats rising below. But still, the concept of so much water floating in the sky was surprising even to a meteorologist like LeMone. I had no idea how much a cloud would weigh, actually, when I started the calculations, she says.So how many elephant units of water are inside a big storm cloud10 times bigger all the way around than the puffy cumulus cloud? Again, LeMone did the numbers: About 200,000 elephants. Now, ratchet up(略微调高) the calculations for a hurricane about the size of Missouri and the figures get really massive(巨大的). What were doing is weighing the water in one cubic meter theoretically pulled from a cloud and then multiplying by(乘上) the number of meters in a whole hurricane, she explains. The result? Forty million elephants. That means the water in one hurricane weighs more than all the elephants on the planet. Perhaps even more than all the elephants that have ever lived on the planet.36The weight of is NOT mentioned in the passage.A. a cumulus cloudB. a tornado C. a hurricane D. a storm cloud37How did Peggy LeMone feel about the result of her calculations?A. She found it not convincing.B. She thought it needed further calculations.C. She was quite surprised at it.D. She considered the calculations inaccurate.38What can be inferred from the passage?A. A storm cloud weighs about 200,000 elephants.B. The water in a hurricane weighs more than that in any other kind of cloud.C. There are less than forty million elephants living on the earth.D. The water in the cloud is in very tiny partials.39What is the best title for the passage?A. How Much a Cloud Weighs B. How Much a Hurricane WeighsC. Surprising Results D. Elephants in the SkyBCan people change their skin colour without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin colour. The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 per cent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 per cent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.Scientists have changed the colour of a dark-striped zebra fish to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebra fish skin colour is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanosomes (黑色素体). The number, size and darkness of melanosomes per pigment cell determines skin colour. It appears that, like the golden zebra fish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation (突变)in the gene for melanosome production. This results in less pigmented skin. However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebra fish genes.Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun, which can cause skin cancer. But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng. Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin colours, said Cheng. The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin colour without damaging it like chemical treatment done on Michael Jackson.40According to the passage, scientists have found .A. people living in northern latitudes need more sunlightB. the reason why people change their skin colourC. the reason why people get skin cancerD. the gene that determines skin colour41We can infer from the passage that .A. people like to change their skin colourB. a mutation in the gene for melanosome production is different in human and zebra fish geneC. people will be able to change their skin colour without chemical treatment in the futureD. skin cancer can be cured now42Which of the following is NOT mentioned according to the passage?A. The version of the pigment gene of Asians and that of Africans are the same.B. Scientists have succeeded in turning the colour of a dark-striped zebra fish into uniform gold.C. Dark skin can protect bodies from utral-violet rays of the sun.D. People like pop king Michael Jackson.43The passage is probably taken from _.A. a novel B. a science report C. a story book D. a science fictionCHundreds of secondary schools are using a controversial reward scheme which “bribes” (贿赂)pupils with iPods and DVD players to turn up in classes and do homework.Almost one million schoolchildren have been issued with supermarket-style reward cards which allow them to collect good-behavior “points” and cash them in for prizes.Schools taking part in the “Vivo Miles” scheme are spending several thousand pounds a year in an attempt to cut truancy (逃学) and promote achievements. The prizes are ultimately funded by the taxpayer, through school budgets. Nearly 500 secondary schools, one in six, have decided to take part in the scheme, which is intended to replace old-style rewards such as stickers and golden stars. But the extent of rewards being offered in schools brought a warning that a generation of children is growing up expecting to be rewarded at every stage. Many youngsters are collecting points for ordinary achievements such as remembering to bring their PE kit and wearing the correct uniform.Under the scheme, teachers award Vivo pointsworth 1 penny eachaccording to the schools policy. Schools typically spend4 to6 on prizes per pupil each year, although some commit considerably more. Most pupils accumulate between 400 and 600 Vivos a year. Vivo Miles insists it is “pretty rare” for a pupil to accumulate enough points to buy an iPod, which requires 3,100 Vivos. But Chris McGovern, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said the scheme amounted to “bribery”. “It misleads children into thinking anything which requires effort has to have a special reward,” he said. “This all must have prizes view is damaging to children in the long-term.” The scheme amounted to an “admission of failure” by schools. He said. “It shows a school has failed to convince children education is important.”44The “Vivo Miles” scheme is aimed at _.A. increasing the income of the schoolB. encouraging students to perform well at schoolC. inviting more students to attend the school nearbyD. encouraging parents to donate to the school45Those who oppose the “Vivo Miles” scheme think _.A. it helps control the problem of truancyB. it teaches children the importance of savingC. it will mislead children about efforts and rewardsD. its not easy to get more than 600 Vivos a year46Whats the writers attitude towards the scheme?A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Unconcerned. D. Objective.DA research found that people shown silent videos of piano competitions could pick out the winners more often than those who could also hear the music. It underlines the importance of our sense of vision, say scientists. Their study concludes that the best predictor of a winners musical performance was the visible passion they displayed, followed closely by their uniqueness and creativity.Chia-Jung Tsay, from University College London, UK, is the studys author and herself a concert pianist. She was interested in how music was judged and found that even professional musicians were unaware of how much they were using visual information over sound. “For the last two decades, Ive taken part in various competitions. Through this experience, I found that depending on what type of evaluations were used,?the results might vary widely. This led me to wonder about how much visual information really affects these important decisions,” she explained.More than 1,000 participants in the study were given samples of either audio, silent video or video with sound, and asked to rate the top three finalists from 10 international classical music competitions. The actual competition winners were only correctly identified by those who were randomly assigned(分配) the silent petitive performance. She added, “We must be more mindful of our inclination(倾向) to depend on visual information at the expense of the content that we actually value as more relevant to our decisions.”47According to the study, who would most probably win a piano competition?A. One who plays with great passion.B. One who plays unique music.C. One who plays creatively.D. One who has a sense of vision.48The participates in the study were asked to_.A. watch classical music competitionsB. assign the silent videosC. pick out the best three competitorsD. decide who the winner is49What probably led Dr Tsay to carry out the study?A. Her love for music.B. Her desire to explore.C. Her experience as a competitor.D. Her curiosity in musical education.50Where does this text probably come from?A. A text book. B. A sports magazine.C. A story book.D. A science website.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.“Shoppers need to check the labels (标签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be non-existent,” said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. “Food production is highly competitive. _51_It will increase profits, and consumers wont always realize they are being tricked.”Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-flavored products sold in stores. 52 Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar. 53 Lets take jam as an example. Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all. 54 Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. “Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading. 55 Unfortunately, it is also legal and
