阅读理解实战训练及精细ACultural differences in business entertaining include problems such as whom one entertains and where, and how one entertains. In countries where status is important,it is not advisable to invite people of different statuses to the same dinner party.Americans will often invite people to their homes. However in some societies the home is considered too private, unworthy,or too small to serve as a proper place for business entertaining. In some countries there is a “help yourself” method of entertaining done in the home. This method does not work well when entertaining people whose culture teaches them to wait to be asked three times before accepting an offer of food.In one instance,a Chinese guest went hungry all the evening without eating though he was quite hungry because he was too shy to take food after only being asked to do so once.In another case,an American woman executive(负责人) was being entertained in London. After having the tea served, the American woman helped herself to cream and sugar rather than waiting to be served. The English hostess was upset by the thought that she was not serving quickly enough. As a general rule,a small gift from your home country is OK.A gift that is tied to the particular interest of the person is especially good.Gifts for children are also well received.Be careful that the “hometown” gift you are bringing to Singapore was not made in Hong Kong.Because many gifts carry symbolic meanings,it is always best to seek the advice of a cultural information before selecting gifts. The giving of large gifts,or payments for special service, should only be carried out after talking with legal department in the home and host culture.1.It is no good inviting people of different social positions to the same party in the country where_.A.people dont pay any attention to your positionsB.people care much about their statusesC.entertainment is importantD.entertainment is not advisable解析:见第一段第二句话:“在那些很重视社会地位的国家,最好不要把不同层次的人放到一起。”答案:B2.The Chinese guest is taken for an example to show _.A.that offering food should not be made too earlyB.a “help yourself” method does work well in this caseC.that accepting an offer of food should be made laterD.a “help yourself” method does not work well in some cases解析:根据第一段第六句可知。自己动手吃饭的方式并不是对所有人都适用,不同的文化背景造就了迥异的社交方式。答案:D3.The passage infers that American women like _.A.a “help yourself” methodB.waiting to be servedC.a slow serviceD.cream and sugar解析:见第一段最后两句:“喝完被人端上来的茶,这位美国女性自己动手去加糖和奶油,使得女主人非常自责,以为自己照顾不周。”答案:A4._ is especially proper.A.A big gift B.Large payment as a giftC.A small gift from ones home D.A gift from Singapore解析:见最后一段第一句话:“一般说来,从祖国家乡带来的礼物就非常合适。”答案:CBIf you have been joining in chat room conversations,or trading email with web pals (网友),you have become one of the millions who write in a peculiarly short form of English. And youve got a sense of humor about short forms like SOHF (= sense of humor failure) to describe Internet newcomers who dont understand you.Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are talking online, many of them all talking at the same time. Its fast: try talking to six people at once. Its brief: three or four words per exchange. It takes wit, concentration, and quick fingers. And it requires tremendous linguistic economy.Theres neither time nor space for explanations. Why consume precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB( = be right back) will do?Want to enter a conversation?Just type PMFJI (= pardon me for jumping in).Interested in whom you are talking to?Type A/S/L,the nearly universal request to know your pals age,sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a response from your pal.If something makes you laugh, say you are OTF (= on the floor),or LOL (= laughing out loud),or combing the two into ROTFL ( = rolling on the floor laughing). And when it is time to get back to work or go to bed,you type GTG (= got to go) or TTYL (=talk to you later).People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can.Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion,as it takes, more time to hold down the “shift” key and capitals.Punctuation (标点) is going,too.5.Many people talk on the Internet _.A.by sending short emailsB.by using a particular short form of EnglishC.by using peculiar English words and expressionsD.in a funny way解析:根据第一段最后一句。“你已经成为数百万个用特别简短的英语形式在网上聊天的人士之一”可以推出答案。答案:B6.In order to talk to several people at the same time on the Internet _.A.you have to speak fast and fluentlyB.you should speak with wit and humorC.you have to express your ideas in a brief wayD.one should pay much attention to the accuracy of words解析:从第四段可得知,同时和几个人聊天需要快速、简捷、聪慧,注意力集中和敏捷的手指。A项中的speak in fluently,B项中的humor,D项中的accuracy都不符合题意。答案:C7.If you get 17/F/NY as an answer to your A/S/L,it means_.A.the person on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fineB.you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New YorkC.you are talking to 17 girls who are from New YorkD.the person who you are talking to is a 17-foot tall New York girl解析:从第七段可得知,A/S/L分别表示:年龄(age),性别(sex),地区(location)。答案:B8.To save time on the Internet,_.A.some people leave their letters in the dustbinB.some people never use “shift” in their writingC.many people leave the capital and punctuationD.people seldom use capital letters or punctuation解析:“Capital letters are left in the dust”的引申义为:不用大写字母,“Punctuation(标点)is going, too.”表示也不用标点。答案:DCAbout 1966 or so,a NASA (美国航空航天局) team doing work for the Apollo moon mission took the astronauts near Tuba City. There the landscape of the Navajo Reservation (保留地) looks very much like the lunar surface.Among all the trucks and large vehicles were two large figures that were dressed in full lunar space suits.Nearby a Navajo shepherd (牧羊人) and his son were watching the strange creatures walk about, occasionally being watched over by other NASA workers. The two Navajo people were noticed and approached by the NASA people.Since the shepherd and his son did not know English, they asked the NASA people who the strange creatures were. The NASA people told them that they were just men that were getting ready to go to the moon. The shepherd became very excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts. The NASA officials thought this was a great idea so they provided a tape recorder. After the man gave them his message, they asked his son to translate. His son would not.Later, they tried a few more people on the reservation to translate and every person they asked would chuckle (偷偷地笑) and then refuse to translate. Finally, with cash in hand someone translated the message.“Watch out for these guys, they have come to take your land!”9.The appearance of the Navajo Reservation is very similar to that of _.A.the Tuba City B.the moonC.the NASA research center D.the Apollo moon mission解析:文章第一段说到,那块保护区的景色与月亮表面的景色很相像。答案:B10.When the older Navajo heard that the men in front of him were going to the moon,he _.A.felt frightened and ran away quicklyB.chatted excitedly with the NASA workersC.got on the modern trucks and large vehicles for funD.tried to say something to the moon creatures解析:文章第二段说到,当牧羊人听说他们要飞往月球时,他很激动,并且问他可否捎带信到月球上。答案:D11.The son did not translate the words his father said because _.A.he had trouble in understanding his fatherB.the words his father used were too difficult to be translatedC.his father was sending a warning against the NASA peopleD.he believed that the NASA workers could understand their language解析:从文章最后一段可知,牧羊人的儿子并非不理解他父亲的意思,也并非他父亲的话他翻译不了,而是不想惹怒这群美国人,因为他的父亲说的话不利于美国政府。答案:C12.According to this passage,we can know that the shepherd was _.A.patient and braveB.foolish and impoliteC.humorous and intelligentD.knowledgeable and talkative解析:由整个故事推知,牧羊人幽默而又聪明。答案:CDIn summer, millions of people will head for the beach. And while the ocean can be a great place to swim and play,it may also be useful in another way. Some scientists think that waves could help make electricity.“Have you ever been on a surfboard or boat and felt yourself being lifted up by a wave?Or have you jumped in the water and felt the energy as waves crashed over you?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.“There is certainly a lot of energy in waves.”Scientists are working on using that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean.“The winds start out by making little ripples (波纹) in the water, but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,”Taylor said.“Waves are one of natures ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.”When waves come towards the shore, people can set up dams or other barricades to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine (涡轮).The turbine can then power an electrical generator (发电机).The United States and a few other countries have started doing research on wave energy, and it is already being used in Scotland. The resource is huge.We will never run out of wave power, besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil and coal.Oceans cover three quarters of the earths surface. That would make wave power seem perfect for creating energy around the world. There are some drawbacks, however.Jamie Taylor said that wave power still cost too much money. He said that its effects on animals in the sea were still unknown.Plus, wave power would get in the way of fishing and boat traffic. With more research, however,“many of these problems might be overcome,” Taylor said.“Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is growing quickly throughout the world.Finding more energy sources is very important, for traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may run out some day.”In the future, when you turn on a light switch,an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!13.Which of the following is NOT true?A.Wave power costs too much money.B.Wave energy creates the same amount of pollution as other energy sources.C.Wave power affects fishing and boat traffic.D.Wave power may affect marine animals.解析:波浪所发的电能不像其他形式的能源,它不会带来很多的污染。答案:B14.We can infer from the passage that _.A.finding new energy sources like wave energy is importantB.wave energy is a resource that will never run out and is used all over the worldC.wave power is perfect for creating energy around the worldD.wave power doesnt create any pollution解析:这种能源如何利用正在研究中,故B错误。并非波能是最好的能,C错;波能也会带来污染,但程度小,D错。答案:A15.The underlined word “drawbacks” probably means _.A.regrets B.adventuresC.disadvantages D.difficulties解析:从倒数第四段中perfect和however可推知。答案:C16.What can be the best title for the passage?A.How to Get Electricity by WavesB.A Huge Resource of EnergyC.Can Waves Make Electricity?D.The Disadvantages of Wave Energy解析:从整篇文章来看,波能是否能广泛使用,还在试验之中,所以C项最恰当。答案:CEThere are two basic ways to see growth:one as a product, the other as a process.People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new languageall these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have, and their caution or courage,as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try,new challenges to accept. In order to grow,to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks,to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so,we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think were shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate,to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt change or that were not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all. These feelings of insecurity and selfdoubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.17.In the authors eye,one who views personal growth as a process would _.A.succeed in climbing up the social ladderB.grow up from his own achievementsC.face difficulties and take up challengesD.aim high and reach his goal each time解析:文章第二段最后几句提到,在成长过程中,这种旅途真的永无止境:要有体验世界的新路子,尝试新的观念,接受新的挑战。答案:C18.Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?A.Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.B.Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.C.Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.D.Fathers salary rose from 5000 to 7000.解析:从第一段可知,作者把获奖、掌握外语,提薪看作“外部结果”,而把“乐意接受挑战”看作成长过程(process)。答案:A19.For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT _.A.being curious about more changesB.being quick in self-adaptationC.having an open mind to new experiencesD.staying away from failures and challenges解析:由第三段第一句可推知,在成长过程中,人们需要有乐意冒险、面对不可预测的事物和接受可能的失败的精神,而不是远离失败和挑战。答案:D20.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.It is not so easy to measure personal growth.B.To try and fail on the new road facing the unknown is unavoidable.C.There are only two ways to see a persons growth.D.If you are too shy to take any risks in life, you cannot grow up.解析:文章第一段提到看待人成长有两种基本方式。可推知,并非只有两种方式。答案:C21.The best title for this passage should be _.A.Facing New ChallengesB.GrowthProduct or ProcessC.Two Basic Ways of GrowthD.Overcoming Internal Fears解析:从整篇文章来看,作者讲述了如何看待人的成长的两种基本方式。并非人的成长只有两种方式,故排除C。A项和D项属以偏概全。答案:BFHow can you find out what is going on inside a persons body without opening the patient up?Regular X-rays can show a lot.CAT scans can show even more. They can give threedimensional(三维)view of body organs. What is a CAT scan?CAT stands for Computerized Axial Tomography(层面X线照相术).It is a special X-ay machine that gets a 360-egree picture of a small area of a patients body.Doctors use X-ays to study and examine diseases and injuries within the body.X-ays can find foreign objects inside the body or to take pictures of some organs inside if special things as dyes or special liquids are added to the organs to be X-ayed.A CAT scanner, however, uses a beam(光束)of X-rays to give a crosssectional view of a particular part of the body.A fine beam of X-rays is scanned across the body and circled around the patient from many different angles(角度).A computer analyzes the information from each angle and produces a clear cross-sectional picture on the screen. This picture is then photographed for later use.Several cross-ections,taken one after another, can give a clear “photo” of the entire body or of any body organs. The newest CAT scanners can even give a clear picture of active, moving organs just as a fast-action camera can “stop the action” giving clear pictures of what appear only mistily(模糊) to the eye.And because of the 360-egree pictures,CAT scans show 3-imensional views of organs in a manner that was once only seen during surgery or autopsy (examining a dead body).22.According to the first two paragraphs, doctors can see the inside of a patients body by _.A.giving the patient an operationB.checking body organsC.getting a 360-gree picture of a small area of a patients bodyD.examining the CAT解析:常规的手术、检查无法透视病人,只有外科手术、尸检、CAT技术才能让医生达到目的。CAT是技术,不是图片,因此选项D错。答案:C23.From the last paragraph,we can infer that _.A.the newest pictures become more mistyB.many pictures can be taken at the same timeC.the information about the scanned patient is not highly valuedD.some pictures of the scanned parts of the body are developed for further examinations in the future解析:根据最后一段第四句“This picture is then photographed for later use.”可知。答案:D24.The best title of this passage might be _.A.Modern X-rayB.Three-imensional ViewC.Fast-oving CameraD.CAT Scan解析:文章主要讲述的是CAT技术在医学上的使用,选项D比选项A更准确。答案:DGI grew up in a small town.My father raised chickens and ran a construction company.I was barely 10 years old when my dad gave me the responsibility of feeding the chickens and cleaning up the stable. He believed it was important for me to have those jobs to learn responsibility. Then, when I was 22,I found a job in Natchbill at a country music club called the Natchbill Palace,I washed dishes and cooked from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and then went on stage and sang until 2:00 in the morning. It wasnt long before I became known as a singing cook.I had been rejected so many times by record companies that it was hard not to be discouraged. One night,a woman executive(董事) from a company named Warner Brothers Records came to hear me sing. When the show was over,we sat down and talked and after she left,I said to mysel
