Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources (来源), as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground when electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind. 1From the text we know that windmills _.A. were invented by European armiesB. have a history of more than 2,800 yearsC. used to supply power to radio in remote areasD. have rarely been used since electricity was discovered答案:C。 2What was a new use for wind power in the late l9th century?A. year - old sister, Lily, stayed with the man while Thymus and Owen, both 11, led the ambulance to the spot where he lay Soon the man was taken to hospitalThe fantastic four children who came to the aid of the elderly man deserve the highest respect for their quick - thinking and courage in an emergency situation They are a credit not only to themselves, but to their families and their schoolAnd it is great to be able to hear such a positive story about young peopleWhat is not so positive about this story is the fact that several adults apparently walked by without stopping to helpThis seeming indifference to an emergency situation is a well noted phenomenon which psychologists sometimes refer to as the bystander effectResearch suggests that when a group of people witness an emergency, people are likely to assume that somebody else will intervene and they feel that the burden of responsibility is lifted from their shouldersPerhaps the answer to this sort of things is to introduce a Good Samaritan law This already exists in France and places a legal responsibility on people who witness an emergency situation to help out as long as they can do soThis certainly seems to remove any doubt about who bears the burden of responsibility for offering assistance-everyone1What can we learn about the elderly man?AHe spoke Polish with the childrenBHe fell from his bike and got injuredCHe was taken to hospital by the driverDHe recovered consciousness in the street2In Paragraph 3, the author mainlyAshows his great sympathy for the manBgives high praise to the four childrenCoffers his special thanks to the driverDexpresses his anger at several adults3The underlined word intervene in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning toAbe curious Bgo on Cgive up Dget involved4In France, if an emergency happens to someone,Aoffering help to him is required by lawBpeople have the right to leave the sceneCothers must get permission before helping himDthe witnesses will be punished if the rescue fails参考答案、ABDA阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。 A three-mile-long fishhook-shaped piece of land in the middle of Chesapeake Bay, Tangier Island has always been a community set apart from the mainlandThese days, the islands 500-plus residents, who mostly use golf cars as transportation on the villages narrow roads and who dont allow the public consumption of alcohol, have managed to preserve their traditional cultureProbably the most striking example of their heritage is the islanders unique way of speakingDavid LShores, a linguist (话言学家) who was born on Tangier Island, has found out the reason why the speech of Tangier Island strikes outsiders as strangeAccording to Shores, the islanders pronounce their vowels louder and longer, which causes common words to sound different when spoken by Tangier nativesSome, scholars have said the natives of Tangier speak an old form of English that goes back to the time of Queen FElizabeth IShores doesnt buy into that theory Its not Eliza- bethan English by any means, he says I doubt if anyone could trace it to that, because the variety of English at that time were greatBruce Gordy, a Tangier native and a former teacher at the islands only school, has made a list of 350 strange expressions and words that he says are used and undertook only by the islandersBut Gordy clones think its the strange vocabulary that puzzles outsiders most when hearing Tangier residents speak I think what confuses them is the fact that we are talking backwards a lot, he saysHe offers an exampleIf somebodys stupid, you know what I say? Gordy says Im saying hes smart, but the way I say it makes everyone know Im emphasizing hes stupidBoth Gordy and Shores believe Tangiers isolation (孤立)has led to the islanders unusual way of speaking Now, the economy of Tangier Island is moving away from its tradition of crabbing and fishing as the number of crabs and oysters in the bay declinesMore residents are finding work on tugboats(掩船)or looking for jobs on the mainland Of course the sons and daughters went with their dad out crabbing You dont go with your dad on the tugboatThats not going to preserve Tangier culture, Gordy says1According to the text, Tangier IslandAhas been discovered recentlyBis a fast developing x-pillageCis a land of golf loversDhas a small population2In Shores opinion, the language the islanders speakAcant be called English in factBis unique in its pronunciation systemCcan never be understood by outsidersDshares some similarities with Elizabethan English3Whats Gordys attitude towards the preservation of Tangier culture?AConfident BSatisfiedCConcerned DAngry参考答案13、DBC阅读理解。 Nick Petrels is a doctor in Montreal. He works 60 hours a week.He takes care of 159 patients a week in the hospital and at his office.Hes been a doctor for ten years.Dr Petrels gives his patients good medical advices. But he doesnt just tell his patients when to do.He also sings to them on television.Dr Petrels has his own TV show. The show is in Italia,English and French. The doctor starts the show with a song and then gives medical advice. He explains a medical problem or disease in simple language. After that,he sings another song.Dr Petrels produces and performs in his own show every week. The program is very popular with his patients and with people who enjoy his singing. His dream is to perform in Las Vegas. His favorite songs are love songs, and he has a compact disk of love songs that he wrote.Dr Petrels says,“I always love to sing. All my problems are gone when I sing.”But when Dr Petrels was young, his father didnt want him to be a singer,so he went to a medical school. Some people tell Dr Petrels he can help people more as a doctor. But Dr Petrels says he helps people when he sings, too.“I like to make people smile.Sometimes its difficult to make a sick person smile.Medicine and entertainment (娱乐)both try to do the same thing. They try to make people feel good.”【语篇解读】这篇文章描绘了蒙特利尔一个有趣的医生
