Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TV-they seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature. But now 400 organizations in the UK, from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some wild time. They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside. Activities such as building dens, climbing trees, rummaging for conkers and playing hide-and-seek are just some of the things kids can do. Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park.Children often need a helping hand from Mum and Dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go. Andy Simpson from the National Health Service says, We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids development, independence and creativity, by giving wild time a go.So despite the complicated world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing natures playground is what modern children need. David Bond from Project Wild Thing says, We need to make more space for wild time in childrens daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted.”This might sound a bit old-fashioned to you or maybe, like me, it makes you think about sticking on your boots, getting outdoors and reliving your childhood. Theres no age limit on-enjoying yourself!24. What is the best title of the text?A. Benefits of wild timeB. Wild time for childrenC. More space for childrenD. I was going to meet an old university friend I hadnt seen for years ,and was really excited to hear all his news.My train was running a little late, but that was no big problem- I could text him to say I would be delayed. He would understand. But. where was my mobile phone? I had that familiar sinking feeling. Yes, Id left it at home.No mobile phone. Im sure Im not alone in feeling anxious, on edge and worried when I dont have my phone with me. In fact, I know Im not alone: two thirds of us experience nomophobia , the fear of being out of mobile phone contact. Thats according to a study from 2020 which surveyed 1,000 people in the UK about their relationship with mobile phones. It says we check our mobile phones 34 times a day, that women are more nomophobia than men, and that 18-24-year-olds are the most likely to suffer fear of being without their mobiles.77% of them say they are unable to be apart from their phones for more than a few minutes.Do you have nomophobia?l You never turn your phone off.l You obsessively check for texts, missed calls and emails.l You always take your phone to the bathroom with you.l You never let the battery run out.Its funny to think that around 20 years ago the only people with mobile phones would be businessmen carrying their large, plastic bricks. Of course, these days, mobile phones are everywhere. A UN study from this year said mobile phone subscriptions would outnumber people across the world by the end of 2020.And when there are more phones than people in the world, maybe its time to ask who really is in charge? Are you in control of your phone, or does your phone control you?So, what happened to my university friend? When I arrived a few minutes late he just laughed and said, You havent changed at all-still always late! And we spent a great afternoon chatting, full of jokes and stories, with no interruptions and no nagging( 难以摆脱的) desire to check my phone. Not having it with me, I felt strangely liberating. Maybe Ill leave it at home on purpose next time.28.What does the passage talk about?A. The history of mobiles.B. The story of meeting an old university friend.C. The introduction to mobile phones.D. Critical.DWhen John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力)and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society, said George Vaillant, the psychologist(心理学家)who made the discovery. And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.Vaillants study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the mens mental-health scores with their boyhood-activities scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.Workingat any ageis important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, dependence, confidence and competencethe underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They help him understand that people must cooperate; and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isnt everything. As Tolstoy once said, One live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love ones work.32.What do we know about John?A. Competent adults know more about love than work.B.Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.C. Love brings more joy to people than work does.D.
