The artist reproduces prints of this original image using liquid colors and paper. There are many methods of printmaking. The oldest form of printmaking is the woodcut. Woodcut prints may have been used in the Middle East as early as the fifth century to make cloth designs. They were also used starting around the ninth century in China to print documents. As you might have guessed, woodcut prints are made out of wood. The printmaker first draws an image onto a smooth piece of wood. Then he or she cuts away pieces from the surface. When the wood has been cut, liquid color called ink is painted onto the surface. It is then pressed on a piece of paper. The areas the printmaker cuts away will be lower on the surface of the wood. These parts do not get any ink. But the raised part of the wood does receive the color. A different piece of cut wood is used for every color in the final image. This is called an indirect method because the ink is put on the cut form before it goes on the paper. This method of printmaking became popular in Europe in the sixteenth century. Woodcuts were also a widely used artistic form in Japan from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Japanese prints from this period were called ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world.”Many of these images showed natural scenes of the Japanese countryside. Others showed pictures of city life including popular actors, fat sumo wrestlers, and beautiful women. These prints were popular with the middle class people living in towns. Because the prints were mass-produced and not original works, they were not costly. People could own artwork for a reasonable price. These ukiyo-e prints had a great influence on many artists in Europe during the nineteenth century. Painters like Edgar Degas and Vincent Van Gogh used the sharp lines and off-centered look of these prints in their paintings.71.Which of the following is WRONG according to the text?A. woodcut prints is not cheap.B. Projected snowfall ranges from 10 to 20 inches, it said. The new storm was expected to hit other big cities along the East Coast, including Baltimore and Philadelphia, which is still extending into New Jersey and New York. It would pile on to the 32 inches of snow that fell in suburban Washington in the biggest snowfall to hit the city in decades. The Office of Personnel Management announced on Monday evening that Federal Government Offices in the Washington area would be closed on Tuesday. Emergency employees were expected to report for work on time, but non-emergency employees were excused. The Federal Government was closed on Monday, though President Barack Obama still held meetings at the White House. Schools and most business in the region were also shut.In the country, about 80,000 people lost power on Saturday, and some customers still had no electricity or heat on Monday. Many schools said classes would be canceled through Tuesday, even before the latest storm warning. On Monday, winter sunshine bathed the nations capital and the surrounding region, where people dug out their driveways and sidewalks to finally start to clear streets in some residential neighborhoods. Bus service on Monday was limited to just a small number of routes in the Washington D. C.Cold and snow blanketed much of the central United States this winter, slowing weight gain in cattle and pigs, delaying livestock sales, and increasing feed costs for producers. The new storm might also hit the Northeast, the nations largest market for heating fuel. The weekend blast largely bypassed that region.74.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Another Big Winter Storm hit the West Coast of the USA.B. With Liam Fox overseeing(监管)the Ministry of Defense and promising to make cuts “cruelly and without mercy”, it is becoming ever harder to believe our national forecasting service will survive much beyond this gloriousdare I say it, summer. The trouble is, the Met Office(英国气象局) is a soft target. We are more skeptical about scientists ability to predict the weather than we are about an octopuss (章鱼)ability to predict the outcome of a football match. This is largely to do with our own fear of complexity.Few of us get enough information to judge the quality of the forecast. As I write, one forecast says the overview for the day is “a good scattering of showers mixed in with brighter weather for many of us”. Snow or hail would be a shock; beyond that, the words are fairly meaningless. But, in fact, we dont want our forecasters to be more specific. The most scientifically accurate statements that a forecaster can make involve probabilities, but probabilities leave us in difficulty. A study in the United States, for example, showed that most people thought “a 50 percent chance of rain” meant that the forecasters hadnt a clue whether it would rain or not. What it really means is that, in a given set of conditions, it rains half of the time. But who has time to think about when Newsnight is about to start? Its far easier just to let something concret
