It was no accident that Fiona was so popular. From an early age she had tried hard to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party, and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She was such a busy girl, with so many friends. However, she felt very lucky, no other girl had so many friends at school and in the neighborhood. But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, at school, everyone was having a great time, drawing, painting, giving gifts. They had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. However, when all the presents had been made and shared out among classmates, Fiona was the only one who had not received a present! She felt terrible, and spent hours crying. How could it be possible? So much she had done to make so many friends, and in the end no one saw her as their best friend? Everyone came and tried to comfort her for a while. But each one only stayed for a short time before leaving. When she got home that night and asked her mother where she could find true friends.“Fiona, my dear,” answered her mother, “you cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you really want true friends, you will have to give them real time and affection (情感). For a true friend you must always be there for them, in good times and bad”.“But I want to be everybodys friend! I need to share my time among everyone!” Fiona argued.“My dear, youre a lovely girl,” said her mother, “but you cant be a close friend to everybody. There just isnt enough time for everyone, so its only possible to have a few true friends. The others wont be close friends”.Hearing this, Fiona decided to change her ways so that she could finally have some true friends. That night, in bed, she thought about what she could do to get them._Her mother was always ready to help her. She could stand all of Fionas dislikes and problems. She always encouraged her. The reason for this direction is well founded:research and test scores from the 1980s and 1990s showed that our students had fallen behindtheir international peers in all of these subject areas. Education officials, teachers andparents all felt that the situation needed to be changed, and quickly. However, in the rushto play catchup in STEMrelated areas, theres one important aspect that is beingneglected (忽略): the Fine and Performing Arts, particularly drama. Its long been understood that a study of drama at the primary, middle and high schoollevel helps students improve in many areas, such as selfconfidence, selfexpression, communication skills, teamwork, and imagination. Most educators and parents agree thatall of these are important for students to develop at any age, but it is difficult for the sameparents and teachers to prioritize (优先安排) study time and classroom time to a subject likedrama over subjects like Math, Physics or Computer Science. Its even more difficult forpolicy makers and school officials to channel funds (资金) towards classes like drama, when the skills arts subjects develop are considered “soft skills.” When the modern world iscalling out for “hard” skills, like those needed to succeed in the techdriven 21st century, how can they possibly prove it is reasonable to spend their funds that are becoming smallerand smaller on anything but STEM subjects? The short answer to the question “why spend time and money on drama?” is that dramaeducation has been scientifically proven to improve students achievement, especially incommunication skills that are very important to a STEM education. As we develop studentswith highly refined skills in STEM subjects, its equally important that we train the teachersthat will support continued growth in these areas. An active, communicative teacher is thebest way to get students on board in the study of STEM subjects, which can be unbearablydry. The best way to develop active communication skills? Drama. The next area in whichthe communication skills can be developed is publication and conference presentation.Drama improves students public speaking skills necessary for STEM students to effectivelypresent papers in conferences and their writing skills necessary to publish papers. Its alsovery important for students to be able to work well with one another. In the real STEMworld, almost all scientific work happens in teams. Without the “ soft ” people skillsnecessary to navigate (导航) all of these interactions, no matter how technologically skilledone becomes, he or she will be at a disadvantage without the ability to communicate andwork in teams. While the nationwide trend (趋势) to focus on playing catchup in STEM education isreasonable, practical, and absolutely necessary, its important not to forget the huge effectarts, specifically drama education, have on the overall education of our children. Thequestion parents, educators, and policy makers should be asking themselves is not “can weafford to support arts education in schools?” but rather “can we afford not to?”55 . Why did Americans start to stress STEM related classes?ABecause the world has moved into a techdriven century.BBecause STEM classes have long been neglected in America.CBecause education officials prefer STEM classes to art classes.DBecause US students are expected to be at an advantage in these areas.56 . The word “channel” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “ ”.AaffordBdirectCcreateDraise57 . The third paragraph is mainly about .Athe benefits of drama educationBthe importance of STEM learningCthe abilities needed for STEM learningDthe reasons to improve drama education58 . The writer probably agrees that .Adrama is more important than STEM classesBdrama education has been the nationwide trendCthe result of neglecting drama education is hard to bearDAmerican students have made progress in playing catchupRead the passage and choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案):Nothing excites school-aged children like the end of the school year! Those nine months of school seem so long to most kids, so when May or June arrives, they look forward to the summer months. Many middle schools celebrate the end of the school year with an all-school picnic lunch. Its a real treat for the kids and a great excuse to get outside in warm weather. If your childs school doesnt have a year-end picnic, why not organize one yourself and invite your childs classmates or anyone else whos celebrating the end of classes? A picnic lunch is easy to organize, especially if several moms band(联合)together to plan it, and its an excellent way for the kids to spend some time together and say good-bye to each other before they go their separate(各自的)ways for the summer. The size of your school picnic will have an influence on the place you choose. If this event is for a whole class of childrenthat is, about 20 or moreits a good idea to consider taking it to a local park. Using park means preparation and clean-up can be shared by all the parents. Park picnic tables arent always the cleanest, so bring along some tablecloths to cover them. Or, you can bring a few picnic blankets for those whod rather put them on the grass. If several families join the planning of the picnic, divide the responsibilities between everyone so that all the work and cost dont fall on one or two families in particular. Make a list of things youll need, including picnic food, dri
